Dear Taylors Hill Community, Welcome Back I would like to welcome everyone back and I hope you and your families had a relaxing break together. This term is jam packed with engaging learning experiences for our students, so I hope they are all well rested and ready to take full advantage of these experiences. 2020 Prep Transition This term our first 2020 Prep Transition session will be on Friday the 1st of November from 9.15-10.15am. If you have a child starting prep in 2020 and you have not enrolled them please do so by Monday the 28th of October, as this will enable them to participate in this important program, which will assist them with a successful transition to school. 2020 Notice of School Transfer/Absence Planning for 2020 is well underway, so if your family is transferring to another school next year, I would appreciate if you could notify the office in writing as soon as practically possible. The opportunity to collaborate with Dr Manju Gupta, regarding how they teach these skills to their students, was really beneficial and I enjoyed spending time with her and her staff and students at Kothari International School.

During my time in the school, I spent time meeting with teams of teachers and support staff, as well as in their classrooms during their literacy lessons in the primary school and in their senior school history and mathematics classes. I enjoyed starting the school day at 7.15am with yoga and prayers with over 3000 students and staff, as well as participating in their sports program.

In May next year it will be a privilege for the Taylors Hill Primary School community, to host Dr Gupta and share the work that we are doing at Taylors Hill.

During my time in India I also had a brief amount of time to explore the history and culture of the country, so of course I made my way to Agra to see the beautiful Taj Mahal. This was truly a magical place to visit.

I also spent time in the Chandi Chowk area of Delhi and visited the great mosque, Jama Masjid, as well as the Sikh temple, Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib. I volunteered my time to cook and feed some of the 25,000 people who visit the temple every day, which was a genuinely remarkable experience.

Welcome back to Term 4 ! We are continuing to work on improving our school attendance. If you are having attendance issues with your child, please let your classroom teacher know so we can work

together to get your child to school every day.

At our school assembly each week we are tracking across the school 90% or above attendance and the number of students arriving on time to school each week. We are highlighting the Year level with the highest attendance. During Week 1, I am happy to report that Year 2 students were our highest

attendance with 103 students 90% or higher. A great effort!

Marvellous MelbourneMarvellous MelbourneMarvellous MelbourneMarvellous Melbourne On Thursday September 19th, the grade 2 students participated in an excursion! This was a very important part of our Term Three Integrated Curriculum topic, Marvellous Melbourne, with a geography focus.

First we drove along St Kilda beach and were able to spot the Luna Park moon face! We then drove past the Botanical Gardens and the Shrine of Remembrance.

Once we got to our first stop, the MCG! we met our tour guide. We were shown the player’s rooms, private boxes and even the MCG’s private library. After our tour we ate lunch walked past Federation Square and Flinders’ Street Station then headed off to the Eureka Tower!

When we arrived at Eureka Tower, we sat down and watched an introductory video. The video gave us really cool information and we learnt interesting facts about the tower.

On the 88th floor of Eureka Tower, we had a 360 degree view of Melbourne City. We could see landmarks such as the MCG, Crown Cassino, the Westgate Bridge and even the Spirit of Tasmania.

After the Eureka Tower we got onto the bus and headed home. It was an exhausting and fantastic day. This is what we thought of our amazing excursion:

Angelina - 'I really liked the MCG because it was the first time I had

been to the MCG and a really big cricket ground. I enjoyed seeing the

Long Room and the Library.'

Lucas - 'I liked the Eureka Tower the best because I like heights and I

liked looking through the telescopes.'

Brooke - 'I liked Eureka Tower because we got to look through the

telescopes and I could see the MCG and Federation Square.'

Jennifer - 'I thought the MCG was the best part, I liked walking on the

field.'

Environment Club Environment Club Environment Club Environment Club

The Environment Club was very busy planting seeds last Friday 11th October. Adut 3B, Nibil 1B, Dallas 2B and Jasmeet 2B were amongst the 20 students who planted over one hundred seed packs. The seed packs were very generously donated by Woolworths Watergardens and organised by the Portelli family. The seeds included vegetables, flowers and herbs. We will wait until the seeds sprout and then we will plant them in the garden boxes on the oval. We will provide further photos of our plants growing, so please watch this space.

Learning Centre News!

Describes the week we have had with the arrival of the annual Taylors Hill Book Fair brought to us by LAMONT. Thank you to all families and friends who have visited the Fair already, to make this our most successful to date. It has been fabulous to see students carefully choosing and discussing their choices with parents. The range offered this year has been impressive with something to suit everyone. If you are reading this on Thursday – you have one day left as the Fair closes 4pm Friday 18th October.

Next week we resume Learning Centre sessions. You are able to check your child’s designated day by checking the Term 4 timetable on ORBIT and blue satchels are a must for borrowing.

Once again, thank you for your support of the BOOK FAIR and the Learning Centre. Every purchase contributes to books being added to our collection and new books for your child to borrow, enjoy and share with you.

Interschool Sports A big congratulations to the students who participated in the Keilor Division Tennis Finals at Overnewton College on Friday. Although it was close, unfortunately the result didn’t go our way with Taylors Hill being defeated by Overnewton, 7 games to 5. We are very proud of the effort that the team put into developing their skills and a big thank you Ms Trower and Ms Andrews on leading this team. We also wish Connor, Kayleigh, Tarmz and Malachi, all the very best during the next stage of Athletic competition on Tuesday the 22nd of October. Prep Swimming A quick reminder that Prep swimming consent is now live on compass and the swimming ability form was sent home earlier this term. Can these please be paid for and returned by Monday the 4th of November as this assists THPS and Paul Sadler Swim Centre with preparations for the event. House Games It’s that very exciting time of the year again for our THPS House Games. This is an opportunity for our students to promote good sports behaviours, be part of a team and encourage the enjoyment of sport. Throughout the year, our House Captains have been working on developing their leadership skills and this is a great opportunity for them to demonstrate leadership by facilitating the activities on the day. This year our Foundation – 3 students will participate on Monday the 29th of October and our 4-6 students on Tuesday the 29th of October. Below you will find a time table inclusive of rotations. Parents are welcome to come and be part of our school community. Please remember to sign in at the office on the day.

Walk to School Month Every October, VicHealth’s Walk to School encourages Victorian primary school kids and their families to walk, ride or scoot to and from school every day. Studies show that it takes 30 days to build a habit. The longer we do something healthy, the more likely that healthy habit will stick. That’s why Walk to School lasts for an entire month, rather than a single day. It’s about building healthy habits for life. Along with the health benefits, it also reduces traffic congestion, saves on parking, helps us connect with family and friends and saves the environment! Part way is okay! If you can’t walk the whole way, why not try parking the car a few blocks from your school and

walk, ride or scoot the rest. Taylors Hills Primary School has joined the hundreds of primary schools across Victoria for a fun month of walking, riding and scooting to and from school. In 2019, we will encourage our entire school to walk, ride and scoot to school. If this is not possible, there are many ways they can still get involved in the fun. Parents are welcome to drop off their children a few blocks from the entrance to the school and walk the rest of the way or parents can organise their child to meet up with friends before school to walk around the oval. Children are healthier and happier when they’re active every day. Walking children to school is a great opportunity to get them active, build their confidence and life skills. It’s also a chance for everyone to spend some quality family time together. About Walk to School Find out more about Walk to School by visiting www.walktoschool.vic.gov.au

Mobile Phones & Smart Watches at School You may have heard in the media our Education Minister James Merlino has announced a ban on Mobile phones in all state schools across Victoria from 2020. The Policy states that:

• Students who bring mobile phones to school must have them switched off and

securely stored during school hours

• The school must provide secure storage for mobile phones that are brought to

school We would like to remind our students and families that mobile phones brought to school are to be handed in at the office at the beginning of each day, where they are stored securely. Phones can be collected by students at the end of each day. Students found to have a mobile phone in their school bag will be asked to hand it to the office for a parent/guardian to collect. Smart Watches are an expensive device which can have similar communication access to that of a mobile phone. We encourage our students to not wear smart watches when at school. We thank you for your support.
