ACADEMIC REGALIA

The tradition of academic dress dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries.Although there has been some variation over the years, the dress governed bythe American Academic Costume Code is the generally accepted dress.

THE GOWNThe gown varies depending on the academic degree it represents. The bachelor�sand the master�s gowns are untrimmed. The doctor�s gown is usually trimmedwith velvet in the front and has three velvet bars on each sleeve. The sleeves ofeach gown are also slightly different.

THE HOODThe hood is indicative of the degree. The lining indicates the color of the collegeor university granting the degree and the trimming represents the field in whichthe degree was conferred.

The length of the hood is determined by the degree. Hoods for a bachelor�sdegree are three feet in length, three and a half feet for a master�s degree andfour feet for a doctoral.
