Rowing

Later in the 19th Century the rowing races were conducted in eight-oared and four-oared boats with coxswains very similar in design to those still raced today.

The CourseThe current course is just over 1,100 metres in length, starting from a fixed toggle line attached to the abutments of the Tasman Bridge and finishing in front of the Regatta Ground.

Saturday 9th February 8:15amWooden rowing shells will feature in Saturday’s rowing to add an historical element to the 175th Royal Hobart Regatta.

With the Australian Wooden Boat Festival on at the same time, we are sharing a common interest in wooden boats.

Other feature challenges are being planned.

Monday 11th February 7:30amRowing will be a great spectacle this year, with a full program of racing, finishing with the renowned Men/Women Open Eight Handicap where a field of up to 18 crews will converge on the finish line.

The terraces are a great place to watch the rowing from, looking over the Regatta foreshore, where there is plenty of activity, as well as fun events such as Greasy Pole and Seal Launch between the jetties.

Rowing, along with Sailing, has been continuously conducted at the Royal Hobart Regatta since its inception in 1838.

Originally, local and visiting whaling crews competed for valuable ‘purses’ of gold sovereigns, over a triangular course starting at Hunter Point (the site of the current grandstand), upstream to a point under Government House, then to the eastern shore Battery at Howrah Point, and return to the start at Hunter Point.

2013 Flagship HMAS Sydney

HMAS Sydney is one of four guided missile frigates currently in service with the Royal Australian Navy. She has recently been extensively upgraded.

Sydney is a long-range escort with the ability to provide area air defence, anti-submarine and anti-shipping warfare, surveillance, reconnaissance and interdiction. She can counter simultaneous threats from the air, sea surface and under water.

Sydney has deployed to the Middle East four times. On the first occasion she took part in Operation Desert Storm, the action against Iraq during the 1991 Gulf War, for which she earned a Meritorious Unit

Citation. She later supported UN sanctions against Iraq in 1991/92 and 1993.

Sydney also deployed to East Timor in support of INTERFEI’ in 1999 and in 2000, supported the efforts bring peace to the Solomon Island. Her fourth deployment to the Middle East was during the pinnacle of the Iraq War in 2003 in support of allied forces.

This is the fourth ship to carry this name and she is the proud inheritor of eighth “battle honours”, more than any other RAN unit.
