Parish Stewardship

STEWARDSHIP SPOTLIGHT - OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE November26,2017

Today is the Solemnity of Christ the King. It is the final Sunday of the liturgical year, kind of the equivalent of New Year’s Eve.

We cap the Church’s year off by acknowledging that Jesus is our Lord and King. As Americans who threw off kings over 200 years

ago, we have a difficult time relating to this. As our king, Jesus earns our complete obedience to His will, which is the will of the

Father. Therefore we ought to spend a significant amount of our lives trying to discern what His will is and praying for strength

through the Holy Spirit to do His will every moment of our lives.

It is God’s will, no His commandment, that we love Him with our whole being. How do we do that? Jesus gave us the perfect

example, giving of himself completely to the point of death on the cross – for us. We remember and participate in that sacrifice at

every Eucharist, and we are supposed to offer our entire being to the Father at mass. This is an immense obstacle for Americans. We

pride ourselves on being self-made, pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps. With such a mentality, it would be easy to say that we

own what we have and who we have become. We studied hard, worked hard, honed our skills, competed for the job, climbed the

ladder of success, and now we are reaping the benefits of all of that. If we feel that because of that story, we owe nothing to God, we

are fooling ourselves. Where did our very lives come from? Where did the talent come from? We should step back and take a look

at our lives. To whom do we give ultimate credit?

Now, if you are expecting the punch line that we should tithe, or give this much time, or that much talent, you are wrong. The punch

line is that we should first and foremost be living lives of Thanksgiving – Eucharist in Greek. We should thank God every day,

every moment of every day, for the richness of His goodness to us. The fact that every one of us can point our finger to someone

who is doing better than us does not give us an excuse for not living lives of gratitude. In fact, living a grateful life is most meaning-

ful when we are facing challenges.

This is Thanksgiving weekend. As we finish off leftover turkey and watch more football games, we should step back and consider

all that God has done for us. Then be thankful. Then live a life that revolves around that gratitude to God and to Jesus, our Lord,

Savior, and, yes, King.

Jesus exercises his kingship by drawing all people to himself through his death and Resurrection. Christ, the King

and Lord of the universe is the one who came, “not to be served by to serve,’ so that his life is a ransom for all those who believe and follow his example. (CCC#786)

The First Letter of St. John” by Bishop Estévez with Mass and Dinner November 30 @ 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM Marywood Retreat & Conference Center, 235 Marywood Drive Saint Johns, FL 32259 United States Join us at Marywood Retreat & Conference Center on Thursday, Nov. 30 for Mass and dinner with Bishop Estévez, who will be presenting on the First Letter of St. John. Registration begins at 6:00 p.m. followed by Mass and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The cost for the event is $25. The First Letter of St. John is a narrative masterpiece which contains the development of becoming perfect as the Eternal Father is perfect. This Apostolic writing is the fruit of the life of St. John the Apostle, the beloved disciple and of those in his Community. This letter can be seen as a miniature of the fourth gospel. The essential teaching is that the Son of God truly became one of us. And his life is seen in a Trinitarian paradigm. The disciples are seen as sharing of this life. Faith and love sustain this new life. Bishop Estevez sees this exploration as a gift in preparation for Christmas. Call (904) 287-2525 or Email [email protected] to register.
