Dear Sir, dear Madame,
In mid 2019, Germany joined the initiative launched by French President Emmanuel Macron and seven other Member States to become substan-tially climate neutral by 2050. Germany‘s draft Climate Protection Bill therefore stipulates sector specific annual emission levels to achieve this goal in practice. In the transport sector, annual greenhouse gas emissions are to be reduced by 65 to 68 million tonnes by 2030.
In the medium to long term, many cars and light commercial v ehicles will be electrified. However, it is also clear that the overwhelming majority of cars and heavy goods vehicles will continue to deploy combustion engines or hybrid drives in the foreseeable future D ecar-bonisation of a viation and shipping constitu tes a nother particular challenge. As in the case of heavy goods transport, it will only be possible to move towards climate friendly mobility with renewable fuels that ensure low greenhouse gas emissions.
This stance is confirmed if we look to internation al developments, particularly in the most important agricultural countries of North and South America and Asia. Gradual decarbonisation of transport in these countries will be achieved above all by increasing the propor-tion of renewable fuels in petrol and diesel. Sustainability provisions stipulated in the Renewable Energies Directive (RED II) create a globally unprecedented “level playing field” for all renewable fuels used in Europe.
However, RED II does not make a tangible contribution to greater clima te protection in the transport sector, as the 14 % renewable energy target for 2030 only leads to emission savings mathematically as a result of multiple offsetting. National transposition of the recast RED II by mid 2021 thus becomes all the more important and will have to entail progressing well beyond the European minimum targets for renewable energies.
The measures needed to achieve this are crystal clear: the provisions on greenhouse gas reduction volumes currently in force in Germany will need to be developed further and gradually increased. Scope should be opened up promptly for renewable fuels to count towards CO2 fleet emission figures, while simultaneously promoting more biofuel system research. Including the transport sector in emissions tradin g or introducing taxation of energy sources as a function of their CO2 emission impact can also help attain climate protection targets.
As a national and international platform for discussion, the 2020 Fuels of the Future international conference will add ress issues around the future of mobility. Get involved in this pioneering debate on decarbonising the trans-port sector it‘s a global challenge.
