Last weekend saw the tenth edition of Puerto Alcudia’s traditional Sepia Fair. In total, 24 nautical companies participated and 24 restaurants were in the marquee. 12 of the restaurants presented sepia (cuttlefish) dishes and some offered fideuada with seafood from the bay. Representatives of the Town Hall including Mayor Coloma Terrace and Councillor Carmen Garcia announced the winners of the best decoration. Dos Pins were the winners. They also won the best tapas and sepia dish. Nautical-based activities and musical performances as well as traditional dancing all took place along the bustling promenade. The atmosphere was great and thankfully the weather behaved well too.

The annual Feria de Abril took place this year on the C’an Conill carpark. With a more central location the fair, which was organized by the Centro Cultural Andaluz de Pollensa, drew the crowds with its music, dance and family entertainment. Opened on the Friday

night the fair carried on throughout the weekend. On the Sunday, the monumental paella was the star of the show. Borne from Seville’s traditional “Feria de abril”, the fairs have spread and are now held across the island.

¡Hola! It’s all feeling very sporty at the moment and in this week’s issue there is a focus on running in the sports pages. However, if that’s not for you, how about a spot of Medieval Games? I love it when something completely unexpected crops up. Take a look on page 6 for more information.

Again, the community pulls together, this time it was thanks to everyone on Facebook. Together we managed to find the home of a much loved and lost bunny. As I type there is one happy little girl out there and a relieved parent. The power of the internet!

Hasta luego,

Joanna

The two Nickies (Baylis and Liles) are back with N2 Productions, an English Theatre Group for kids. Now comprising two classes, there are 24 members aged between 6 and 16, the group meets at Club Pollença whose new committee have been very supportive.

For the two Nickies the aim, is not just about the end result of a show, but also to teach life skills such

as confidence, clear speech, and being aware of their own body language. Another benefit is learning about some English plays, musicals and their authors. Members are expected to work hard and are taught how to behave in a professional manner. It’s not all about having fun, but the audience’s reaction every time, makes all the blood, sweat and tears worth it. Testament to their success is when ex-pupils go on to study

Drama. Two have moved back to the UK to pursue their dreams.

Having to come up with something different and stimulating each time can be a challenge but this month’s “The Black and White Theatre Show” guarantees singing, dancing, sketches, comedy, as well as some surprises. See the What’s On Pages for dates and ticket information.

In response to a request from many of their members, EporE is once again offering up-to-date information with regard to personal taxation here in Spain. There have been many changes in tax

legislation for 2014/2015 including inheritance tax, tax on pensions, income tax and others, with regard to European residents and non-resident property owners. As on other occasions, tax

expert Sr Miguel Angel Serra of Bufete Garrigues will be making a full presentation in English, followed by a question/answer session.

of covering the needs of 20,000 households.

This won’t of course bring about an end to the need for coal to fire the power station, but it is interesting to note that the government’s subsidies per kilowatt of electricity from coal are higher than those for renewables, thus making coal, as far as the government and so taxpayers are concerned, more expensive.

Puerto Pollensa’s new parking areaThe parking area by the Calle Tramuntana entrance road from the Formentor by-pass had been generally welcomed, as it would add more parking and also clean up a scruffy bit of land. The Unió Mollera Pollencina party, Puerto Pollensa’s own party, had been among those supporting the development and the spend of some €30,000. But then it emerged that the town hall was going

to double this investment by adding a second layer of asphalt in order to strengthen the parking lot, and this was because it was intending to allow it to be used for the parking of buses and lorries and for the depositing of damaged vehicles, something that mayor (for now) Tomeu Cifre says is necessary. The UMP is planning protests against the decision.

Floating moorings approvedPuerto Pollensa’s Reial Club Nàutic (i.e. yacht club) will manage a new floating mooring system that is designed to be able to accommodate sixty-two boats of between four and eight metres length. The proposal for this mooring had come from the Balearics delegation of the national Costas Authority and it is one way of attempting to eliminate so-called “pirate” mooring in the bay. Another will come through a system

of ecological buoys with a capacity for 200 boats of up to twenty metres. The floating mooring should, subject to bureaucratic processing, be functional this season, while the project for the buoys will come in next year.

More odd business at Alcúdia’s libraryThe Can Torró library in Alcúdia has been at the centre of a dispute between the director and workers who have accused the director of harassment. This dispute, which is now being addressed by mediation, took a strange turn. One of the workers who had complained and whose contract has not been renewed discovered that her settlement entitlement was paid twice into her bank account. This resulted in her account being temporarily embargoed (through no fault of her own). The error has now been resolved.

Cifre abandons the Partido PopularIn the end he didn’t wait to have his fate decided for him by Partido Popular head office. Tomeu Cifre, threatened with being removed as mayoral candidate in Pollensa because of legal cases hanging over him, got his retaliation in first and announced that he would be forming a separate political entity that will fight for election in May.

Though he hasn’t handed in his PP card, Cifre made it clear that he could no longer support the PP of José Ramón Bauzá, who he accused of “authoritarianism” and of “losing people along the way”. He was referring to issues such as language policy, with which he has disagreed. The PP needed to change course, he suggested.

Cifre has the support of three of the four other PP councillors, including Francisca Cerdà, the delegate for Puerto Pollensa, but not of David Alonso, who has put himself forward to be the PP’s new mayoral candidate. At time of writing, it was not clear who this candidate would be. It had seemed as though Alonso would be a shoo-in, but three other challengers had emerged.

The Alternativa per Pollença, never slow to rejoice in PP strife, noted that after having been dormant for ages the PP’s local Facebook page suddenly sprang back into life, Cifre calling upon the people of the town for support.

Podemos in PollensaFor several weeks, conflict has existed in the ranks of the Pollensa branch of Podemos, the political movement that

has come from nowhere in the past twelve months to become a significant force on Spain’s political scene. The conflict concerns a veteran activist, 79-year-old Martí Cifre, who was elected as local secretary-general in January, but who has since encountered opposition from a rival faction. The Podemos organisation in Mallorca has called on Cifre to resign, citing this opposition as one reason and also a provocative attitude, but he refuses to resign, noting support he has from some Podemos supporters in Pollensa.

Alcudia’s cabling - the mess continuesThey’ve managed to cover up the hole along the Calle Teodor Canet left by the paralysed work on the high-voltage electricity cabling, but elsewhere in Puerto Alcudia, the mess and the noise have become intolerable for many. Residents in the vicinity of the Avenida Argentina, for instance, have complained that the drilling has been so intense and has been going so deep that houses have been shaking. With the official tourism season starting in two weeks, it is difficult to see how the work is going to be completed: in theory, work of this type in tourist areas should cease on 1 May. As for Teodor Canet, what happens with this is anyone’s guess.

Opponents of the cabling continued their campaign against it and for a re-routing along the Alcanada by-pass by handing out leaflets at last weekend’s fair in the port, their stand conveniently located by the entrance to the gastronomy tent. The protests are due to continue, subject to approval by the government’s delegate to the Balearics (who has to authorise protests), at the S’Estol del Rei en Jaume infant school (Calle Antoni Maria Alcover) on 24 April

and via a march along the route that the cable takes to the cave of Sant Martí on 26 April (which will take the protesters along the road into Bellevue). Organisers of the protests are determined to ensure that Red Electrica does not resume work along Teodor Canet after the current three-month hiatus.

Shenanigans at the pancaritatsThe post-Easter pancaritat picnics may sound like genteel occasions and, while some are, others are not. Muro’s Sant Vicenç picnic led to numerous complaints by residents offended by mess, noise, drug-taking, drinking and sexual activities. The Crestatx picnic, perhaps the largest and best-known of the local pancaritats, had its share of controversy with one-word slogans being written in foam on signs by roundabouts between Crestatx and Sa Pobla town. These words - “humility”, “effort” and “commitment” - were thought to have been the work of the local Partido Popular indulging in a spot of election campaigning. The party denied that this foamy graffiti had anything to do with it.

At Campanet’s picnic, there is a version of the Pollensa Sant Antoni soapy pine climb, and this year’s climb had its moment of drama when one of the “quinto” youths fell eight metres from the tree onto the hard ground in front of the Sant Miquel church. He needed to be kept in hospital overnight, but he was lucky to have escaped with no fractures - or worse.

Muro doesn’t have its soapy pine climb during the picnic, as it takes place during the Sant Francesc fair, which was last weekend. Starting at midnight, “the lowering of the rabbit” (which is the

prize at the top of the tree in contrast to the Pollensa cockerel) has its own recipe for potential disaster, but the occasion appeared to pass without incident.

Potato exports cutSa Pobla’s export of potatoes is expected to be only half that of 2014. The potato-growers experienced a difficult winter because of the weather and in particular an unusual lack of sunshine. This means that potatoes are smaller than usual. Other weather factors contributed to lower yields. The brighter news is that the sterling-euro exchange rate should help to increase exports to the UK.

Boost to renewable energyMallorca and the Balearics have a surprisingly low amount of electricity generated by renewables. It is said to represent a mere 2.4% of the total, compared with - according to Red Electrica - 47% on the mainland. A reason for this low production has been the level of guarantee that the national energy ministry had been demanding in order to prevent speculative developments. Investors had been expecting to only pay a €50,000-bond, an amount that was considered perfectly reasonable, but then the government went and added a €500,000 per megawatt demand as well. This was not considered to be reasonable. This sum has now been lowered to a mere €20,000, thus opening the way to far greater use of solar and wind farms. Of immediate benefit in the local area is that for the planned photovoltaic park by the Es Murterar power station. It is projected to generate fifteen megawatts and to be capable

Cupcakes, birthday cakes, donuts, cake pops, cake decorations, icing, you name it; if you need something special whether it’s ready made or for you to make with, Anita Cakes is the solution. Sitting just off the beach in Puerto Alcudia, this deliciously pink boutique is a cake shop heaven. Also very mobile, you may have seen the pink caravan or pink vespa delivering cakes across the island. Tried and tested at the Sepia Fair last weekend, TOTN highly recommends the chocolate, raspberry and cookie cupcakes, although not all at once. And the donuts are pretty special too. www.facebook.com/Anita-Cakes

And so the story goes… A dragon was attacking the kingdom of Catalonia and was fed two lambs per day. Once the lambs became scarce, the people decided to draw lots to send a family member to satisfy the dragon’s hunger. Families who lost a loved-one to the dragon were rewarded with rich compensation. One day the princess was chosen and on her way to the cave she met a knight named George (or Jordi), this

gallant knight slew the dragon and from the blood that flowed from the creature came a red rose, which Jordi handed to his princess. The knight was offered all the riches he needed from the King but he passed it on to the inhabitants of the kingdom. From a church built in his name, flowed miraculous healing waters. The tradition continues, men give roses to women and, to commemorate the deaths of Shakespeare and Cervantes (both around the same time), the women give books in return. Exported as an international tradition, the 23rd April is now UNESCO’s World Book Day.

La Fira del Vi, Pollensa’s very own wine fair, is now well established and has become popular with professionals and amateur wine lovers alike. Now in its 12th edition, the fair will welcome four new wineries who will exhibit their wines alongside the regular participants.

The fair highlights the unique and personal character that results from the wine-making procedure, for example, even coming from the same winery and the same grape variety, wine can differ widely from one vintage to the next. Also focusing on the delicate process of wine-making, the Fira will show guests that even the smallest factors produce different results, from the mixture of grape varieties, to the time spent ageing in barrel.

Mallorca is a wine destination with many different producers. This year, with no less than 36 of the islands wineries attending, the fair is a superb place for wine professionals and wine lovers to come together and taste such a wide variety. It is also the ideal environment to promote Mallorca’s wineries and their wines as buyers (commercial or private) can learn about, taste and buy the wines from the exhibitors.

Last year, our highlights were Miquel Oliver’s ‘Xperiment’ label. This wine is unique in that a different wine is made each year, the producers tweak something in the process whether it’s the grape variety, the terroir, or the fermentation, it will be interesting to see what they present this year. The superbly made Mesquida Mora and the distinctive Butxet wines were also favourites. This year, new wineries to the Fira are Bodegas Munar, Canyelles I Batle, C’an Verdura and Can Ramis. We

look forward to seeking them out.

The ‘Associació de Vi Primitiu’ is the founder and joint organizer,

with the Town Council of Pollença, of the annual wine

fair. The fair will run from 10-20:30 on Saturday

18th and 10-14:00 on Sunday 19th. For more

Participating Wineries

Are you among the fans of television’s latest craze with its fierce knights, beautiful ladies, divided loyalties, cruelties and battles of strength and power? Or do you just enjoy history, horses, lively entertainment and a Mallorcan barbeque?

On Sunday 17th May over at the Hipica Formentor riding stables near Sa Pobla, there will be an all-day Medieval Games. Regular riders at the stables having been learning jousting, archery and even decapitation (but only the pretend sort) for several years and now stage an annual spectacular every May.

The riders and horses wear medieval costume and the competitors are armed with shields, swords, lances, bows and of course their flowing standards. There is a fantastic atmosphere as the horses thunder around the arena and a real sense that the Age of Chivalry has returned. The riders carry their own family crests and the day commences with a horseback parade and carries on with fiercely fought battles of skill. At the gallop, the competitors collect hanging rings on their lances. They later joust with wooden horses as their foe. They whip off the heads of evil enemies, in this case made of sawdust and attempt to hit a bull’s-

eye with their arrows whilst staying on their horses.

The event begins at 11am and ends at 5pm. There is entertainment throughout the day with displays from the Archers of Mallorca and medieval fighters, commentary and music from a medieval pirate, belly

dancing and a grand finale and medal giving. Tickets costs 12€ for adults and 9€ and include a barbeque lunch with wine or soft drink. There is a bar open all day.

Last year the winner was Christina Frydenlund from Pollenca who will be defending her title on 17th

May. Will she be beaten by a Knight of the Realm or will another lady take the throne? Tickets are on sale at the stables and from various members of the Medieval Games team. Call Lorenzo on 609 826 705 or email [email protected] for more information.

When people start running, they can often develop niggles and pains in various parts of their lower limbs, and it can be down to a number of reasons. First of all, it’s vital that you learn to listen to your body. What frequently happens with ‘new’ runners is that they start to run, love it, and so drastically ramp up their mileage in a short space of time. It can be too much, too soon and too fast! If you haven’t run in the past then it is necessary to build up muscle strength and endurance in the legs and core. Running can place a lot of impact on the lower limbs and so remember to take a slow and gradual approach to allow the soft tissues to adapt.

The correct footwear is a must for most sports but even more so for running. If you are planning to run more seriously, or more often, then I would strongly advise making a visit to a professional running shop where they can test your running gait and offer you advice on the best footwear. If this is something you have already done, and are still experiencing the pain then it may be worth seeking the help from someone who is trained in kinetic chain evaluation as they can assess the problem and look to resolve it for you.

Pain that occurs in the shins may not always solely be a problem with the shin. Shinsplints, as they are commonly known, are caused by a degeneration of muscles or tissues that attach to the tibia (shinbone). Too many miles, with too little rest, improper biomechanics or tightness and weakness in the calf muscles can all be contributing factors. Because the propulsive motion of running works the rear leg more so than the front, muscle imbalances are common, and as a result, runners can easily develop tight calf muscles and weak shins.

So, you don’t have to stop running but the key areas for you to focus on are; correct footwear, slowly and gradually increasing your mileage and biomechanics along with stretching and strengthening exercises. Try performing 3 sets of 15 controlled calf raises 3 times a week and this should help strengthen the rear part of your leg. Good Luck!

Dear Natalie,I recently started running but had to stop because I got searing pains in my lower shins, on the inside. Can you tell me what it is and how to fix it? Should I stop running? New Runner from Pollensa.

An ultra endurance mountain test, the Ultra Mallorca consists of two runs. The first begins in Andratx and ends in Pollensa. It covers 105km and a cumulative altitude of 4,200m. The runners begin on Friday (17th) night (at midnight) and they have 24 hours to cover the Serra de Tramuntana. The second race is the Trail Mallorca Serra de Tramuntana. These runners start in Valldemossa and cover a total of 62 km with slopes of 2,000m-2,400m. They have 16 hours to complete the course.

The Serra de Tramuntana is a beautiful and very technical route along the famous Dry Stone path. It has become so popular that the race is oversubscribed. The finishing line will be in Pollensa’s Plaça Major. So, good luck to all, we’ll see you at the other end!

team at the final stages of the season. The one bright spot in the last couple of games has been the return to form of wonder kid Marco Asensio. If he can continue in the same vein and Bigas can return sooner rather than later, then safety in the second division should be accomplished.

Mallorca has a tricky game away at Alcorcon on the 19th followed by a home game against Tenerife on Saturday the 25th with a kick off time of 8pm. The visitors, based in Santa Cruz, are in a similar position to Mallorca and this inter-island clash could well have a significant bearing on the remainder of the season. There are already rumours that Soler may be out of a job before the next edition of Talk of the North.

Lugo 4-0 Real Mallorca This game was over inside 15 minutes. Fullback Erik Saborit gave away a blatant penalty with 11 minutes played and he was duly sent off. The penalty was converted and the home side scored two more goals in the following four minutes. If a team is reduced to 10 men they have to roll their sleeves up and dig deep to stay in the game. Real Mallorca seemed to accept that once Saborit had been dismissed then the game was over. This attitude has to change, and change soon.

Real Mallorca 2-3 Racing Santander Another day, another defeat: Pedro Bigas was rushed back into the team although he is clearly nowhere near fit. Twice the visitors took the lead, twice Xisco equalized. In the last minute of added time with Mallorca seemingly happy to hang on for a point the visitors scored an astonishing winner. The players trooped off with heads bowed low. These are dark days indeed.

The troubled season of Real Mallorca has taken another backward step. Despite the boardroom’s new air of tranquillity following the takeover of the club by Hanover born Utz Claassen, the club’s performances on the field of play have hit a new all time low. When head coach Miguel Soler was appointed under the watchful eye of Director of Football, Miguel Angel Nadal, it seemed like a match made in heaven. Both had illustrious playing careers with the Islanders and critically the fans backed them both 100%. Initially the new playing style instigated by Soler proved popular with the players and they responded by harvesting 10 points out of 12 in his first four games in charge. There was much optimism and indeed expectation that the team could make up lost ground and possibly enter the playoff picture.

After those first four games it is difficult to describe what has happened although the expression “the bubble has burst” springs to mind. The numbers speak for themselves: 1 point out of a possible 15 is relegation

form and there is an anxious look over the shoulder towards the bottom of the table. Soler decided after the initial burst to embark on a policy of rotation of players, leaving them out in turn and indeed even playing them out of position. One of the golden rules in football is never to change a winning team. Quite astonishingly club captain Joa Victor and Paguera-born Xisco decided to air their grievances at the squad rotation in the local press. It is one thing to disagree in private with the head coach but it shows a lack of respect and confidence to run to the press with behind the scenes gossip. Football is a team game and the players should stick together and get behind their leader. One factor cannot be overlooked and that is the absence of Pedro Bigas during the latest barren run. He is certainly a talisman having played all the games in the unbeaten sequence. His qualities in central defence have not gone unnoticed by bigger clubs. Hopefully the medical team can get to the root cause of his continuing hamstring problems because he is desperately needed in the

Last weekend saw the return of the ever-popular Pollensa Half Marathon. The streets

were filled with onlookers and local bands who cheered on the appreciative athletes. The atmosphere was superb and the race has been praised, one athlete calling it as ‘..definitely the best race in Mallorca’, with many more singing its praises on the Elite Chip page. Well done to all TOTN readers who took part, Personal Trainer Kim was the first local lady across the line. See www.elitechip.net for full results of both the Half Marathon and the 7.5 km.
