Join us in May as we take you to some of the hottest birding sites in Minnesota! We’ll take you in the field where 90 percent of the state’s regular bird species have been seen. The Detroit Lakes area is located in a transition zone in northwestern Minnesota where tall grass prairie meets northern hardwood and conifer forest ecosystems. The diversity of plant, animal and bird life is so unique that all of the state-listed bird species have been documented in the festival birding area. In a small

geographic area, birders can find a tremendous variety of species. Mid-May birding is spectacular!

This year’s festival offers several remarkable presentations! Carrol Henderson returns with fascinating information gleaned from tagging and tracking loons that migrate into the Gulf of Mexico. From Winnipeg, Bob Taylor will delight everyone with the secrets to his professional photographs through his casual humor. From Ithaca, NY we welcome a MN native who has revolutionized monitoring of birds worldwide. John Fitzpatrick’s message will help us understand how birds can save the world.

This year you have the opportunity to jump on the bus and explore the Pine to Prairie International Birding Trail into Manitoba. We’ll visit one of North America’s birding hotspots – Oak Hammock Marsh!

More than 200 birds have been recorded during our festival. This year we willvisit several natural and restored habitats, including forests and expansive prairies, that lead to an incredible diversity of bird sightings. Birders attending the festival have been able to check off species such as the Chestnut-collared Longspur, Greater Prairie Chicken, Black-backed Woodpecker and Sharp-tailed Grouse. You won’t find another festival that offers such great numbers of woodland warblers right next to a plentiful array of prairie sparrows or vast numbers of shorebirds! We’ve done the scouting for you and will take you by comfortable coach bus to the hot spots.

Birders of all levels, from beginner to experienced are invited to take part in the festival, sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce and US Fish & Wildlife Service. We’ll treat you to some of our best small town hospitality and most experienced leaders from across the nation.

Register by May 3 to be included in the special “early bird” drawing for a pair of binoculars, donated by Eagle Optics! Grab your binoculars and field guides, and we’ll See You at the Lakes in May!

COVER DESIGN: The Festival of Birds Committee thanks Robert Taylor for the use of his Western Meadowlark photo, our 2013 theme bird.

DINNER AND PROGRAM“GULF COAST OIL IN MINNESOTA MIGRANTS?” – CARROL HENDERSONMinnesota DNR Non-game Wildlife SupervisorNestled in the woods along the shores of a private lake is Five Lakes Resort. Their newest venue is The Barn – which was repurposed in 2012 into a wonderful center for events. Our Backyard Grill meal, followed by the presentation, will be held in the hay loft. Our buffet offers hamburgers or veggie burgers, chicken breasts, buns, pasta salad, carrot cake and coffee, water or lemonade. Cash bar available.

Carrol Henderson is an author, photographer and wildlife manager. Since 1997 he has supervised the Minnesota Department of Natural Resource’s Nongame Wildlife Program, developing programs for the conservation of Minnesota’s nongame wildlife species. He has planned and developed projects to help bring back bluebirds, Bald Eagles, Peregrine Falcons, Trumpeter Swans and river otters. His passion for the conservation of Minnesota’s wildlife has led him to take a closer look at the state bird, the Common Loon, and how it may have been impacted by the recent oil spill in the Gulf Coast. Henderson has collaborated with the US Geological Survey’s work in monitoring and learning more about the migration of the loon. Researchers surgically inserted tiny satellite transmitters into the abdomens of loons so they can follow the birds’ migration routes and feeding patterns, while learning whether the loons survived in the oil-fouled Gulf of Mexico.  In addition, about 80 other loons were fitted with geolocator tags, which record daily location, temperature, light levels and pressure data used to log the foraging depths of these diving birds. Along with migration and winter feeding patterns this research will also help identify how avian botulism may transfer in the food chain. Other bird species were also studied to learn more about the toxins of the Gulf Coast spill. You’ll be intrigued by what has been found and the potential impacts the oil spill continues to have on our Minnesota migrants.

In the event of an emergency that prevents a speaker from delivering their presentation, the Festival of Birds/Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce will attempt to replace the speaker and will not be held responsible and will not issue refunds if another speaker cannot be secured.

DINNER AND PROGRAM“PHOTOGRAPHING BIRDS FOR OVER HALF A CENTURY” – ROBERT R. TAYLORFriday, May 17, 5:15 pm-7:00 pmCost: $27, includes dinnerStudent Life Center at M State CollegeJoin us for another yummy meal served by the cooks at M State! Enjoy meat lasagna or vegetable lasagna, Caesar salad (vegetarians: garden salad), garlic bread, strawberry shortcake, coffee, water and lemonade. Dinner is followed by Robert Taylor’s captivating presentation.

Robert Taylor has had a life-long fascination with nature and its inhabitants. He became a naturalist as a young boy and as a teenager, picked up the camera to capture birds on film. One of his most satisfying accomplishments was photographing Great Gray Owls and the resulting book, The Great Gray Owl: On Silent Wings. From Winnipeg, Manitoba, his strong attachment to Canada’s arctic and sub-arctic regions lead to photographing Polar Bears each autumn at Churchill. His photographs in The Edge of the Arctic captured beautiful scenes in the Churchill and Hudson Bay area. Robert’s self-published book, The Manitoba Landscape is a best seller and has won two major awards. Robert graduated from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto with a science photography degree. He was awarded fellowship in the Professional Photographers Association of Manitoba and earned the honor of Master of Photographic Arts of the Professional Photographers of Canada. One of the few photographers to earn the honor, he was accepted into the prestigious Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Whether you admire a photograph that captures the subject eloquently in time or aspire to do the same, you’ll be fascinated with Robert’s rendition of old-time photo techniques to the much improved equipment of today. As you’ll see, Robert has an entertaining story behind the special photographs he’s captured!

In the event of an emergency that prevents a speaker from delivering their presentation, the Festival of Birds/Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce will attempt to replace the speaker and will not be held responsible and will not issue refunds if another speaker cannot be secured.

WEATHER & ATTIRENorthwestern Minnesota weather is highly variable during the spring months. Temperatures usually range from the 70’s to the 40’s. If it’s windy, it can seem much colder! We suggest that for field trips you bring jackets for both warm and cold weather that you can layer, along with hats, gloves and waterproof outerwear. Waterproof footgear is also recommended for field trips, as dew may be heavy in the mornings. No field trips will be canceled unless weather is severe. Refunds will not be given for field trip cancellations due to weather conditions. Feel free to dress in casual attire for all festival events.

FIELDTRIP GUIDELINESAll fieldtrips will depart from the east side of the M State College in Detroit Lakes, located on Highway 34 East. With the exception of workshops and evening events, all trips will be via coach buses with onboard restroom, fieldtrip leaders and a naturalist. Granola bars and water will be provided on all trips. Several trips also include a sack lunch, as noted in the trip description, which includes a hearty pasta salad with veggies and meat, (vegetarian: without meat) assorted crackers, mixed fruit and bar or cookie.

Many of the fieldtrips involve a considerable amount of walking. Participants are required to stay with the group. Please notify the trip leader if you have limited mobility or a health condition that limits the distance you are able to walk. Your fieldtrip experience begins as the bus departs so personal vehicles may not caravan behind the buses on field trips and boarding at locations along the way may not be accommodated. If you need to leave Detroit Lakes early on Sunday, please plan accordingly. Please be on time as the buses leave at the times noted from the parking lot of the College and there are no refunds! Return times may fluctuate slightly from the stated time, especially if bird sightings are exceptional on any of the fieldtrips. The use of bird call devices is not allowed by participants and is limited to circumstantial use by the trip leaders only. Please be considerate and limit side conversations and turn off cell phones. Many of our unique species are located by sound. We kindly request that those choosing to smoke do so away from other birders and properly dispose of butts. We are committed to providing an enjoyable and safe experience. Space may be limited on some field trips so register early! Coffee, muffins and fruit will be available Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning at the Birders Café.

FREE WORKSHOPSaturday, May 18, 1:30 pm – 2:30 pmCost: Free, included with event feeStudent Life Center at M State College“THE DECLINE OF THE MEADOWLARK – ARE CONSERVATION LANDS HELPING GRASSLAND BIRD POPULATIONS?” - DR. MARISSA AHLERING, Ph.D.On a pastoral spring morning the song of the Meadowlark has lifted many hearts and stimulated many memories. This melody has been diminishing from the prairie landscape and in some cases is all but absent. So where have the Meadowlarks and other grassland birds gone? Marissa Ahlering, Prairie Ecologist with the Nature Conservancy, will discuss her upcoming research to determine how many grassland birds are left in the northern Tallgrass prairies, where they are and what types of landscape or local factors are associated with these populations. This research will be an essential first step in gaining insights of a concern that prevalent management actions on public lands may not reach the desired response on grassland birds. Most importantly, this work will give recommendations on how to reverse this trend.

The 4 square mile patchwork of wetlands has proven to be a magnet for migrating birds and the rich diversity of species that nest in the Tallgrass Aspen Parkland of northwestern Minnesota. The state’s most intact grassland system is a mosaic of prairie and sedge fens (wetlands fed by ground water) accented with groves of aspens or scattered bur oaks. We’ll drive the impoundment’s dike road and make several stops along the way. An Agassiz Audubon rep will be on hand to help point out and identify birds. Birds we’ll be looking for: American White Pelican, Black Tern, Baird’s Sandpiper, Wilson’s Phalarope, Wilson’s Snipe, Common Raven, Black-billed Magpie, Hooded Merganser, Bobolink, Yellow-headed Blackbird, Short-eared Owl, Northern Harrier, Sharp-tailed Grouse, Sandhill Cranes and Bald Eagles.Monday, May 20, 7:00 am leave Canad Inns, Polo Park, WinnipegWe’ll arrive at Oak Hammock Marsh WMA, a must-see North American birding hotspot! In their 20th year, Oak Hammock Marsh’s Conservation Center houses the Ducks Unlimited Canada headquarters, an interpretive centre, café, gift shop and third floor observation deck to view the 8600 acre marsh with more than 50 islands for nesting birds. A naturalist will lead our morning birding walk and we’ll get a behind the scenes guided tour. Check out the centre’s 28,000 sq. ft. planted green roof! Birds we’ll be looking for: Boreal forest warblers such as Redstart, Cape May, Magnolia, Bay-breasted and Blackburnian; many species of shorebirds including Black-bellied and Golden Plovers, Dowitchers, and Hudsonian and Marbled Godwits. After lunch, we’ll travel to the 29,000 acre Narcisse Wildlife Management Area. In the aspen-oak parkland we’ll look for Great Horned Owl, Red-tailed Hawk, Swainson’s Thrush, vireos and warblers. SATURDAY - MAY 18DINNER AND PROGRAM “DISCOVERING HOW BIRDS CAN SAVE THE WORLD” – JOHN W. FITZPATRICKLouis Agassiz Fuertes Director,Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Ithaca, NYSaturday, May 18, 6:00 pm-8:00 pmCost: $30, includes dinnerStudent Life Center at M State CollegeDr. Fitzpatrick is a native of St. Paul, MN. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University in 1974, and received his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1978. Since 1995 he has been Director of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology and professor in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He pioneered the development of eBird and other Internet-based “citizen science” projects as revolutionary tools for global-scale bird monitoring. A member of the International Ornithological Council, Fitzpatrick is also a Fellow and former President of the American Ornithologists’ Union. In 1985 he received AOU’s highest research honor (Brewster Award) for his co-authored book Florida Scrub-Jay: Ecology and Demography of a Cooperative Breeding Bird. His research on this endangered bird has spanned more than 43 years. Among his 140+ scientific articles and books, he has published extensively on tropical American birds, including original descriptions of 7 new bird species he discovered. He is co-author of the book Neotropical Birds: Ecology and Conservation, and a principal author of the Handbook of Birds of the World, volume 9. He enjoys hiking and watercolor painting, has been a bird-watcher since kindergarten, and lives with his wife Molly on a beautiful hillside near Ithaca, NY. In 2012, a newly discovered bird species from Peru, the Sira Barbet (Capito fitzpatricki), was named in his honor.

This evening’s keynote presenter, John Fitzpatrick will emphasize the vital roles of birds. Birds represent our most accessible and sensitive indicators of environmental health and ecological change. Especially due to the Internet, today individual citizens have an unprecedented opportunity to generate essential population trend data at continental scales. Applying advanced data-mining techniques together with high-speed parallel processing has produced a genuine revolution in how we visualize and comprehend species distributions. As a result, humans have crossed a historic threshold and now serve as worldwide biosphere sensors. The question is, do we also have the will to self-correct? Birds present us with numerous motivations to do so, and an excellent barometer for measuring our successes and failures. Dr. Fitzpatrick will suggest that both the most rare and most common birds teach us much about human nature, environmental protection, and our opportunities for saving not just species, but also the great natural systems on planet Earth.
