Setting: Island of Matuku ( Fiji)
Main Character: Tuifaga, Tuwawa , The Dog ( Makelsi’s dog)
Other Characters - Villagers, Makelesi( witch)
Plot / Summary
This Story is from the island of Matuku in Fiji, where used to live a fierce giant named Tuwawa Balavu.
He had a special set of big sharp teeth which he used to eat people. He would capture people and would
eat. Because of Tuwawa, people of Matuku decided to leave their home island and take refuge in
neighbouring island. They all set of in their boats. As they were leaving, unfortunately one of the babies
named Tuifaga slipped from his mother’s arms and fell into the shallow water. The mother of the child did
not find out until they reached the other island.
Apart from the giant, a witch named Makelesi also used to live on that island with her dog. While chasing
seagulls on beach, the dog found the baby and called Makelesi, Seeing the poor baby, Makelsi’s heart
melted, she took the baby home and cared for him and soon he grew into a strong young man. One day
while he was going for fishing, Makelsi warned him about Tuwawa the giant and why people left the
island. Tuifaga was curious of giant, so instead of going for fishing, together with the dog he walked
towards the giant’s home. He met the giant on the beach and challenged him for a fight. Tuwawa was a
giant and had upper hand in the battle thus Tuifaga’s dog that was also very strong also joined in the battle.
Finding himself one sided the giant ran towards his house and started pushing out all his children to fight
but they all were killed including his wife, thinking the dog must be exhausted, Tuwawa once gain jumped
into the battle but he was killed and lay dead on the ground. Makelesi was happy to hear about the death of
cruel giant, next day Tuifaga set off in his canoe to the neighboring island to meet his people and when his
mother saw her son, she was overwhelmed with a joy, and together with all the people they returned to the
