I am delighted to welcome you to the inaugural Derwent Art Prize Exhibition 2013, celebrating all that is best about pencil art.
The humble pencil was invented in Keswick around 450 years ago, following the chance discovery of a unique graphite deposit in the Borrowdale valley, just outside the town.
Borrowdale Graphite, unique in its lump form, was renowned for its purity. It was the material of choice for discerning artists for nearly 250 years, until the mine closed in 1895, following the invention of the present-day method of mixing graphite with clay to form the core of the pencil.
Our company has been producing pencils in the Lake District since 1832, and the Derwent brand is recognised around the world for quality, innovation and reliability.
However it is the passion and skill of the artist in whose hands Derwent comes to life that captures the very essence of the product we create in our factory. The Derwent Art Prize seeks to provide a global platform for these talented people who work long and hard to produce the most amazing works of art using graphite and coloured pencil, and we salute them today through this fabulous exhibition of their achievements.
Congratulations and thanks to all who took the trouble to enter, we are overwhelmed with the response, receiving almost 3600 entries!
Special Congratulations to the winners, of course. We look to you to inspire and motivate future years’ entrants to help us build on this amazing first year of the Derwent Art Prize.
With best wishes
David SharrockDirector and General Manager, The Cumberland Pencil Company
Foreword
Yvonne Crossley is Director of the The Drawing Gallery in Shropshire. The Gallery, which opened in 2004 in Central London and in 2008 relocated to the West Midlands, was the first private gallery in the UK to focus entirely upon exhibiting and selling contemporary drawing.
“The show demonstrates a flourishing interest in drawing from a wide range of starting points. I look forward to this open competition going from strength to strength in future years.”
Professor Stephen Farthing RA, is a artist and Rootstein Hopkins Research Chair of Drawing at the University of the Arts, London. He was elected an RA in 1998 and lives in New York and London.
“A celebration of simplicity, creativity, manual dexterity and the most sustainable and least expensive of all the graphic technologies.”
Fisun Güner is a journalist and freelance visual arts writer. She is the Visual Arts Editor for the arts desk and Art Reviewer for Metro, and writes for the Independent and other publications.
“For me, it was especially exciting to find artists using a traditional medium – the artist’s most basic tool – in distinctive and highly imaginative ways.”
