Office for Evangelization Staff

When a young man comes to Jesus in Matthew 19 to ask: “What good must be done to enter eternal life?” Jesus responds with the commandments. However, the young man recognizes there is something else that he is still missing. This prompts him to ask one of the most unforgettable questions in the Gospel: “What do I still lack?”

Jesus then invites the young man to intimacy and discipleship by telling him, “Go, sell what you possess and give to the poor…and come, follow me.” This is Jesus’ invitation to the young man to abundant life.

T o b e f u l l y a l i v e f i r s t r e q u i r e s u s t o g i v e o u r s e l v e s a wa y a n d f o l l o w J e s u s .

Above all else, our culture values the freedom to pursue our own happiness, to choose whatever lifestyle, relationship, or path we think will make us the most happy.

The invitation of Jesus is to consider this: OU R F R E E D OM E X I ST S S O T HAT W E C A N G I V E OU R SE LV E S AWAY.

The paradox of the Christian life is that when we empty ourselves, follow Jesus, and participate in His life we become fully alive. Jesus came not just to be our model of holiness but that we might become fully alive by holding fast to His very person and partaking in His divine life.

The human person desires to be fully alive: to be loved deeply, to be called to greatness, and to accomplish the unthinkable. These desires can only be fulfilled in Christ. It is Jesus who offers eternal life. It is Jesus who defines perfection. It is Jesus who is Love Incarnate.

This is what prompted Saint Augustine when he said, “to fall in love with God is the greatest romance; to seek Him the greatest adventure; to find Him, the greatest human achievement.” As Jesus asked the young man in Matthew 19, he compels you to become fully alive when he says, “Come, follow me.”

GENERAL EVENTS

DIOCESAN DAY OF SERVICEOctober 29, 2016 | Throughout DioceseIn James 2:14-17, we are reminded that faith without works is dead. Every Catholic is called to serve others. It is not just for a select few, but all the baptized. In serving others, we serve Jesus Christ himself. We show our love for God by loving others. The Office for Evangelization encourages all parishes, youth, college students, and young adults in the Diocese of Richmond to spend time in active service once a year. In this way, we will be united as a diocese in our response to follow Christ and care for his people. Each community can choose their own project and determine the length of time.
