An average person spend 70 percent waking hours communicating, and 45 percent of those listening.
Effective listening skill is one of the most important skill.
Personal relationships need effective listening skill to face complicated issues together.
Business peoples and employees need effective listening skill to solve complex problems quickly.
Students and professors need it to understand complex issues in their field.
Thus it is beneficial if we can understand and eliminate effective listening skill.
The following are several barriers for listening skill:
1. Content barriers2. Speaker barriers3. Environmental barriers4. Psychological barriers5. Physiological barriers6. Perceptual barriers7. Personal barriers8. Cultural barriers
Content BarriersListener knowing too much They feel that their
knowledge is so extensive that there is little left to learn
Listener knowing too little They tune out when faced with difficult intellectual or emotional content. They only listen to information that conforms to their beliefs.
Listener does not interested in subject of discussion.
Listener heard it all before.Content is too difficult to understand.Content is repetitious.
Remedies :Do not sit back passively and allow sound to
enter ears.Develop a positive attitude towards the
message.Anticipate the importance of the message
content.Seek areas of interest in the message.Remind yourself that something of value can
be learned.
Speaker BarriersDelivery The speaker's accent, organization, clarity, speed,
volume, tone, inflections, emotions, and appearance affect the interpretation of the message.
Attitudes toward speaker Listeners are influenced more by their attitude towards the speaker than the information presented.If the listener likes the speaker, he/she more likely to empathize and therefore, comprehend the message.
Remedy:Concentrate on the 'what' of the message, not the
'who' or 'how'.
Environmental BarriersTe following can make us switch off from what is
being said, to allow our minds to temporily concentrate on our surroundings:
1. The room temperature
2. The sitting uncomfortable3. Lighting too bright or too dim4. Bad ventilation 5. Noise 6. Smell
Psychological BarriersEmotional states which are brought to the
communication or result from it can come between what is being said and effective listening and understanding. For example:
1. Anger
2. Own anxiety
3. Status difference
4. Frustration Inability to put across idea
Physiological BarriersThe physical condition of the listener can affect
concentration the amount of information taken in , For example:
1. Headache
2. Hearing impairment 5. Tiredness
3. Discomfort, Pain ,Illness
4. Poor eyesight
Perceptual BarriersThe speaker and the listener sometimes see the
same situation from a different point of view and this affect understanding ,
For example:
1. Parents and child2. Attitude unexpected3. Social or cultural background differences4. Expectations different
Personal BarriersThe listener may put up personal barriers like this :1. Preoccupied with own problems2. Thinking about own response without hearing
speaker3. Looking for opportunity to interrupt4. Monopolizing thwe conversation
Cultural BarriersListening is tough, and more so if someone is from
another culture . The problem crops up because of the different choice of words,accents, pronunciation and many other reasons.One must be extra careful while listening to a person from another region or culture. In fact listening can be improved by talking to more people of different nations and trying to understand them. For example,
American: I would like a room for two nights.Japanese speaker of English: For tonight?American: No,not 'tonight'.Two nights.
How can listening skill be improvedWe should use spare thinking time more effectively
and we should think about what the speaker is saying and what the non-verbal signals are telling us.
We should practice concentrating , if we listen to a ten minute news broadcast how much of it can be remember?
We must practice mentally summarizing what the speaker is saying.
We must listen analytically.We should make encouraging noises or nodding heads
to let the speaker know that you are listening .We must maintain good eye contact .
