W hether you wish to store it away, sell it on or keep it for your future children, inevitably you will need to have the dress dry cleaned. Moreover, the same conundrum applies if you are buying a second hand dress. To which dry cleaner do you entrust with your most precious – and in all probability – your most expensive dress? Fortunately for Newark, we have one of the countries leading specialist dry cleaners named Antony Pollard, who has recently taken over Dryclean Plus that is situated at the river end of Slaughterhouse Lane in Newark. Antony has over twenty years experience in the trade, learning his art in London in the early 1990s under the tutorship of one Douglas Steeds. Antony managed ‘Steeds’ dry cleaners, that was situated in Clapham South, and during his management they secured not only the contract for number 10 Downing Street, a place where Antony was once personally complimented by Mrs atcher on how nice her pleated skirts were returned, but also the prestigious royal contract that included Her Majesty the Queen and the late Princess Margaret. ‘It’s All About You’ Staff asked Antony what exactly is involved in the process regarding cleaning a wedding dress, and why is his process so superior to others. “Wedding dresses are one of my favourite items to work on, for very rarely do they arrive at my shop without varying problems to solve. ey arrive with hems ingrained with mud, they may be splattered with red wine stains, food stains, and greasy finger marks from over exuberant children vying for attention. Luckily for me at ‘Steeds’, one of our clients was Sir Richard Branson, whose wedding dress store ‘Virgin Brides’ kept us extremely busy with an array of dresses that came in all shapes and sizes, fabrics and trimmings. Not once was Sir Richard dissatisfied with our service and I sincerely hope that this standard will be continued at Dryclean Plus. When a wedding dress arrives to Dryclean Plus, it is so important to discuss with the customer what they require. Some people just want a basic clean, they do not have one set price for laundering wedding dresses, as they are independent with prices from as little as little as £60.00. If the dress is to be resold, a more concentrated and micro clean will be required. In this case each dress is individually inspected inch by inch before cleaning and pre-spotting every single mark using an array of stain removal chemicals he has collected over the years. Some wedding dresses are washable but it takes a brave man (or woman) to place a £2,000 wedding dress in a normal washing machine. Beaded wedding dresses offer another problem, as any trimmings must be tested in order to ascertain if they are indeed dry cleanable. Over the years Anthony has learnt not to believe any label attached to any an item that is clearly marked ‘Dry Clean Only’. Although we have stringent laws in Britain in regard to labelling and British dying standards, often clothes manufactured abroad (and do check your label as 90 per cent of the clothes we buy on Britain’s high street are manufactured abroad), are not subjected to such stringent laws and standards. erefore any plastic or ‘supposed’ glass beads need to be tested using the dry cleaning solvent, which in this case is named perchloroethylene. Once all the tests have been completed and the stains treated, the wedding dress is dry cleaned, by itself, in one of the most advanced dry cleaning machine available. e Ranzacci dry cleaning machine is a computerised top of the range machine. It allows Anthony to control the solvent temperature, drying temperature and the spin cycle of the machine as it goes through the dry cleaning cycles. is is an invaluable asset when dealing with wedding dresses that are all so individual in size, shape, fabric and trimmings. Some wedding dresses may require a deep solvent ‘bath’, others a short spin and slightly higher drying temperature. Silk dresses, of course, need specialised treatment, and must never be subjected to a vigorous spin action or a robust dry cleaning cycle. Once the dress has been dry cleaned, whether it is to be stored or sold, they will again check for any stains that may not have been removed with pre-spotting or the dry cleaning process itself. If need be, the dress will again be treated and re-cleaned. If satisfied that the dress will be acceptable for the customer’s needs, firstly they will ensure that all the netting is even using a light steaming process and that the dress is ironed sympathetically, ensuring it will look almost as good as the day you bought it. Secondly, each lining is carefully ironed and then pulled through the neck of the dress so as to leave the main body of the dress free to iron without disturbing the parts just finished. Lastly, the dress will either be hung in their upstairs drying room, where it will be wrapped in acid free tissue paper before being bagged and left away from all other garments. Or alternatively the dress can be boxed in one of their luxury storage boxes, again using acid free tissue paper so as to preserve the dress for future generations. Choosing a wedding dress for your big day can be both frustrating and fulfilling. However, once the big day is over, and the honeymoon a distant memory, the decision of what to do with your dress is a complex one. ‘It’s All About You’ Staff asked Antony what exactly is involved in the process regarding cleaning a wedding dress, and why is his process so superior to others.

“Wedding dresses are one of my favourite items to work on, for very rarely do they arrive at my shop without varying problems to solve. They arrive with hems ingrained with mud, they may be splattered with red wine stains, food stains, and greasy finger marks from over exuberant children vying for attention.

Beaded wedding dresses offer another problem, as any trimmings must be tested in order to ascertain if they are indeed dry cleanable.
