REGuLAR MEETING

The August stated meeting for Temple Chapter 271 was held on Aug. 3. Twenty four members were present and the chapter was pleased to have Robyn Throckmorton from Myrtle Chapter attend the meeting. It is a tradition at the August meeting for the Worthy Patron and Associate Patron to provide watermelon for refreshments following the meeting. W.P. Don Jelinek and A.P. David Jelinek continued the tradition. W.P. Don shared that Aug. 3 was actually National Watermelon Day! His research showed that evidence existed that the first watermelon harvest may have occurred as early as 5000 BC in Egypt. The revised standing rules were presented by W.P. Don and approved by the chapter.

Temple Chapter members assisted with the collecting of Shrine Bowl tickets on July 25. Sis. Mary Ann Townsend thanked the following for their assistance at the Shrine Bowl: Bro. Jim Brown, Sis. “THE MASONS OF 54” CANDIDATE NIGHT

SEPTEMBER 18

Dubbed, “The Masons of 54,” this special evening will focus on showcasing who we are, what we do, and what is planned for the future. Its purpose is to create a no-pressure venue to introduce prospective members to our fraternity with the hope they will choose to seek initiation and subsequently become active participants in lodge activities and events. Please take a moment to consider who in your life would make a great Mason and member of our team. Perhaps your accountant, tax preparer, doctor, lawyer, insurance agent, co-worker, congregation member, or neighbor has always known about the Masons but never had anyone talk to them about it. There is NO CHARGE for the meals and drinks of any Lancaster 54 member and lady as well as candidates and their ladies. Lancaster 54 members do not need to bring a candidate to attend! The dress for the evening will be tuxedo OR business suit for lodge members and tuxedo for the Lancaster 54 Leadership Team. Worshipful Master Merv said, “We don’t need to inform the ladies what to wear. They use good taste naturally.”

The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a social hour including an open bar and bartender, an elegant dinner catered by Lincoln’s premiere caterer Chez Hay, a musical performance by internationally known classical pianist Mark Clinton (54 Junior Warden and Grand Lodge Musician), and a short presentation regarding who we are.

This is the once-a-year event in which Lancaster Lodge No. 54 pulls out all the stops to create a wonderful evening. Please contact Patrick Barger at [email protected] to RSVP for this event, as space is limited. Don’t miss it!

NEW LANCASTER LODGE NO. 54 WEBSITE

NOW ONLINE!

Check out www.lancaster54.org. This site was recently established and features many new ways to communicate with us. It also features much historical information about Masonry and particularly our lodge; famous Masons; an event calendar; channels for inquiring about lodge membership; Masonic charity; lodge leadership; and

more! Also, if you have any old photographs from 54’s bygone era, please contact the lodge historian at [email protected].

MASTER MASON DEGREE CONFERRED ON FATHER ROBERT

SCOTT

Robert (Bob) Scott was raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason on Aug. 28 with a large crowd in attendance from both the Lincoln and Omaha areas. Deputy Grand Master John Parsons was in attendance and addressed the Brethren, telling of his friendship with Father Bob over the years and several fun and enlightening stories about his leadership of the Episcopal Church in Bellevue prior to his retirement. Bob’s wife Catherine is Rector of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Lincoln.

A fine catered meal of tenderloin of pork was enjoyed by all in attendance. We look forward to putting Bob’s 30 years of leadership experience to work in Lancaster Lodge!

LADIES AT THE TABLE A HuGE SuCCESS!

W.M. Merv McDonough hosted 54’s “Ladies at the Table” event on Aug. 21. Several people were “walk-ins” in addition to the large number who RSVP’d. Luckily, Sr. Steward Bob Nickell was prepared for that and everyone was able to enjoy a fine meal of Windsor Ham and all the trimmings. In addition, the members of Bethel 27 were on-hand to serve the meal and performed in fine fashion, as they always do, under the direction of Bethel Guardian Val Nickell. We really appreciate Robyn Throckmorton and Greg Mason stopping by to help with this colossal effort. Watch for this event to occur again next year!

LADIES FESTIVAL WEEkEND OCTOBER 9-

11 IN OMAHA

W.M. Merv McDonough reminds Lancaster 54 members of the Grand Master’s Ladies Festival Weekend. He encourages everyone who wishes to spend the weekend in Omaha to call in now to reserve a room at the Doubletree Hotel for the outstanding low rate of $79 per night, a steal for any hotel room let alone the luxurious Doubletree. Grand Master Russ Reno informed his fellow Lancaster 54 members that only a few rooms are left and that,”several people have already

registered and our allotted block of rooms is anticipated to sell out soon, as this event is promoted statewide.” Call the Doubletree at (800) 766-1164 and ask for the Grand Lodge Ladies Festival rate code “GLL.” A flyer will be mailed to every Mason in Nebraska the first week of September with a registration form for the events but does not cover reserving a hotel room. You do not need to wait to receive this form to reserve your hotel room, as that is on “on your own” option since some people may not desire a room or may be attending the Saturday evening concert only.

The event features several site-seeing excursions including Lauritzen Gardens, Joslyn Art Museum, Durham Museum, and area shopping malls. Social hour will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center followed by a prime-rib dinner at 6:00 p.m. A 7:30 concert performance of the University of Nebraska Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Lancaster 54 Sr. Deacon Tyler White will be the centerpiece of the weekend and also feature Lancaster 54 Jr. Warden Mark Clinton as piano soloist.

There will be no event held at the lodge on Oct. 9 due to the large number of 54 Brethren already confirmed to attend Ladies Festival Weekend. See you there!

LANCASTER LODGE IS NOW ON FACEBOOk!

If you aren’t a member of Facebook already, now is the time to create an account. It’s free and easy and you can request to become a member of “Lancaster Lodge No. 54,” the lodge’s very own Facebook page. 54 Brethren from 18 to 80+ are already members and this is a great and easy way to stay in touch with what’s going on in your lodge. You will receive personal updates of all events happening in the lodge, be able to converse directly with your lodge leadership and members with Facebook accounts, and also enjoy the many other benefits of Facebook outside of the lodge. You will also find candid photos of your Brothers as they interact as Masons in 54 and elsewhere, discussion forums on Masonic topics, and detailed event announcements. Go to www.facebook.com to create and account. Email [email protected] i f you need help creating one.

BuSINESS MEETING

The August business meeting was held on the sixth with many brethren in attendance. The first part of the meeting was spent listening to a presentation of the CHIP program to be held at the Nebraska State Fair. Volunteers were asked to help with the activity. It was an interesting presentation, outlining just what is involved in the program, and the Masons role in it.

DEGREE WORk

Balloting was conducted on Alex Rivera-Aschan. I am happy to say that he was elected to receive the degrees of Freemasonry. He shall begin his degree work in September.

Bro. Rusty Frazier became proficient as a Master Mason at the meeting. Welcome Bro. Rusty to the fraternity. Bro. Rusty also received his Bible and apron.

The lodge was given a certificate by the Grand Lodge for our sponsorship of Stacy Starr and her participation in the Masonic All-Star Marching Band. We would like to have Stacy come speak to us about her experience, and what it meant to her.

The lodge is considering instituting a mentoring program for new brothers offered through the Grand Lodge. It is designed to instruct our new brethren in such subjects as what Masonry is about, how to act in Lodge, the role of each officer in the Lodge, how to keep new members coming back, and getting them involved in Lodge whenever possible.

CONCESSION STAND

As the summer is winding down, the Lodge asks its Brethren to consider helping out at the concession stand at the Nebraska football games. Help is always needed and welcomed. Please call Wade Kendle at 304-6385 or email at [email protected] if interested in helping. We need 5 workers per home game. Family members are invited to volunteer as well. Volunteers must be at least 12 years old and must be 16 to handle money working at the window.

uPCOMING EVENTS

Other upcoming activities include degree work beginning once more, Ladies at the Table dinner, possible Table Lodge,

Any Thursday night would be a good time to stop by, we always have some food before meeting, and enjoy good fellowship.

A FuNNy REASON NOT TO MESS WITH

CHILDREN

I leave you with a reason not to mess with children: The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic Elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted it on the apple tray: “Take only ONE. God is watching.” Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A child had written a note, “Take all you want. God is watching the apples.”

The Grand Master noted, “Your support has helped make this a positive experience for the Nebraska Masonic Family and the 246 students who attended. We hope the Band will grow bigger and better each year and the young peoples’ enthusiasm and appreciation grow even more. Your continued support will ensure success and send out an extremely favorable statement about Nebraska Masonry to each community.”

AuGuST BuSINESS MEETING

On Aug. 6, the usual delicious potluck was served prior to the official business meeting. The bills were paid, announcements made, and W.B. Monte Dietrick enlightened us with some Masonic education. W.B. Scott Dodge’s Masonic trivia included: “Montana’s first livestock brand was a square and compass and is still in use today. It was registered by Pointdexter Orr of Beavenhead County, MT in 1872.” AND “Hiram Abiff Boaz, born December 18, 1866 in Murray, KY received his degrees in 1922 before an usually large crowd and served as Grand Chaplain in Texas in 1953.”

DEGREE WORk

On July 23, the degree of a Fellowcraft Mason was conferred

on Carl Medley by W.B. Monte Dietrick. Questions were asked by W.B. John Butler and answered by W.B. Art Kolb and the Charge was given by W.B. Scott Dietrick.

LONGEVITy HONORED

On Sun., Aug. 16, at a gathering of the brethren, and families preceded by an ice cream social, two Masonic longevity awards were bestowed on Brother Robert (Bob) Ellis and W.B. Art Kolb. Bro. GRAND VISITATION

M e m b e r s e n j o y e d a “Christmas in July” themed visitation from our Grand family members on July 24. Members of several Lincoln Bethel’s gathered in the evening at 1635 L Street for an entertaining silly supper. After the silly supper members were delighted by a visit from Santa Clause who had stopped by to visit us while he was on vacation for the summer. While at the visitation members were given the opportunity to meet the new Grand family members and learn about their projects for the year.

SLEEPOVER WITH BETHEL 4

Fo l lowing t he Grand visitation, on July 24, members had a blast and even got a little bit of sleep at a slumber party where Bethel 4 members from North Platte were our guests. Members enjoyed one another’s company, watched movies, ate junk food, and took a dip in the pool.

SHRINE BOWL PARADE

Bright and early the next morning, July 25, members gathered in the Russ’s parking lot in Havelock to prepare for the

annual Shrine Bowl parade. Bethel 60 sported new Bethel t-shirts in a rainbow of different colors. The girls got to march in the parade while some of the adults assisted the Bethel by selling Shrine Bowl game programs. After the parade, the Bethels carried on their tradition by going to the mall food court for some Bethel bonding.

SELLING SHRINE BOWL GAME PROGRAMS

In the afternoon of July 25, members gathered by the football statue on the east side of Memorial Stadium to sell programs. While waiting for everyone to arrive, Bethel 60 members took several pictures with the statues. Some of the youngest members were even found running through the sprinklers! It was a quick way to cool off on a hot day! Bethel 60 members put their persuasive skills to use by selling programs on the west side of the stadium by gate 10 as well as throughout the stands during the game.

yOuTH APPRECIATION DANCE AND PIzzA

PARTy

In the evening of July 25, members were found dancing the night away at the Youth Appreciation Dance and Pizza Party at the Sesostris Shrine. It was a great end to a wonderful weekend! Thank you to all the Shriner’s and their families for including us in the events and activities of the weekend. This is something all of our members, girls and adults, look forward to every year!

COLLEGE VIEW MASONIC LODGE

BOARD OF TRuSTEE’S MEETING

Three members attended the All-temple Board of Trustee’s meeting on August 5 at College View Lodge. We learned about what building projects had been accomplished over the summer months and what was to be expected in the near future.

SuPREME SESSION IN VIRGINIA

Job’s Daughters Supreme Session was held in Richmond, Virginia Aug. 1-9. We are proud that a Past Honored Queen of our Bethel, Kelsey, represented our Bethel. This past year Kelsey severed as a Supreme Bethel Representative to Manitoba. On Sat., Aug. 1, roughly 40 members of Nebraska Job’s Daughters boarded a chartered bus headed to Supreme in Virginia. They arrived in Richmond late Sunday evening and checked into their hotel rooms. The week was full of sight-seeing at the Capitol, Virginia Beach, Mount Vernon, and various museums in the area. Kelsey attended many formal luncheons, banquets, and two youth dances. Kelsey was drawn to be the Installing Guide for the Supreme Bethel Officer Installation. Kelsey also competed in both individual and choir competions. We are proud that Kelsey won first place in the Supreme Fifth Messenger competition and over-all best score in the category. The Nebraska choir preformed in both serious choir and novelty choir and took first place in both categories and even got to sing at the review. After a busy week of fun and friendship members of Nebraska Job’s Daughters returned back to Nebraska early on Monday morning, Aug. 9.

Welcome Autumn! While our Daughters head back to school, Bethel 27 keeps busy as ever.

SHRINE BOWL

Bethel 27 had a busy day enjoying all the Shrine Bowl day activities on Sat., July 25. With an early start for breakfast at George Washington Lodge, we were psyched up and ready to cheer our heads off in the parade. Who has Jobie spirit? WE DO!!! After we enjoyed the traditional Masonic Youth picnic, we took advantage of the hot day with a trip to the Uni-Place pool. It was the perfect cool-down before attending the Shrine Bowl Football game. Despite some minor injuries – of our girls, not the players – we enjoyed helping the Shrine to sell programs during the game. After our hard work, we really cut loose at the Masonic Youth Appreciate dance. Trust me, these Jobies know how to party!

GRAND VISIT

The Sea of Adventure Grand Family visited Bethel 27 on Sun., July 26. The Bethel enjoyed learning all about GG Mary, AGG Bruce, GBHQ Abbi, MNJD Kelli and MNC Charmel’s plans and projects for the year. Ice cream sundaes and teaching MNC Charmel how to play “Apples to Apples” for the first time were definite highlights!

ECCO PARk

The members and council

once again headed to our adopted ECCO park for its monthly cleaning on Aug. 20. While it’s an ongoing challenge to see who finds the most unusual trash, the discarded tire of this month’s trip will be hard to beat! With a spic-and-span park, we headed to Amigo’s for dinner and socializing.

WORSHIP SERVICE

This term our Go To Church Sunday will be held at Heritage Presbyterian Church on Sun., Aug. 30. Not only will our lovely ladies be showcasing their talents by singing and signing “Nearer My God To Thee,” they’ll also have the opportunity to show off their “how many waffles can you fit in your mouth” talents with our Waffleman lunch after the service.

Bethel 63 enjoyed participating in the Shrine Parade and helping sell programs at the Shrine game. Line dancing was a highlight at the dance after the game. What a fun day. Aug. 20 will find us robed and in the Bethel again. Photo courtesy of Julie Munford

SHRINE BOWL

Lincoln Assembly 6 members participated in all of the Shrine Bowl activities on July 25. These included walking and riding in the parade, attending the picnic, cheering the teams at the football game, and enjoying the music at the Masonic youth dance. The members thank the Masonic adults for sponsoring all of the wonderful activities. Lincoln Assembly member, Allison Burris, Grand Charity, represented Nebraska Rainbow Girls and the Grand family at half-time of the Shrine Bowl.

PLEDGE GROuP

A formal pledge group is being formed by the Assembly for young girls, ages 5 to 10 years, who have an interest in joining Rainbow Girls when they reach the age of 11 years. The pledge group will have one formal meeting each month and can attend the Rainbow Girls fun meetings. If you know of any young girls who would be interested in becoming a part of this group, please contact Mother Advisor Jen Birdsall or Pledge Advisor Cass Orton.

Bethel 5 has been dark for the months of July and August and has not done much, but plans to be active once the fall term begins. Some of the activities we have done over the summer include attending a Saltdogs Game, having a Progressive Dinner, being visited by the Grand Family at our Grand Visitation, and attending the many events of the Shrine Bowl.

HIGHWAy CLEAN-uP

Bethel 5 has adopted a stretch of Highway on West O Street by Pleasant Dale. This stretch previously belonged to Liberty Lodge 300. This project will be completed 2 times a year, once in the fall and once in the spring. We are excited about this project and hope to continue it for years to come.

uPCOMING EVENTS

Our next meeting will be on Sept. 12. It will be a Stop and Go meeting. We will also be Installing Council and the rest of the Officers at this time. Please mark your calendars and feel free to attend any events.
