Each year, I have the privilege of writing to you about Rendezvous Farms to recognize our accomplishments, to address our challenges and to share with you our outlook for the future. One of the genuine pleasures I get from writing a new piece about Rendezvous is that I am literally revisiting the entire farming enterprise that I knew from so many years or more back.

And each year, I am more excited about the pace and scale of change that we at Ren-dezvous Farms are undertaking to fulfill our unwavering focus on raising the very best of Simmentals for our many customers across Canada and the United States Midwest.So what’s going on here at this farm? I guess we are like the sport’s team schedule focusing on the destination, not the journey in achieving our goals of becoming one of the leaders in marketing bulls in this industry.

We will always remember the place we started from in this breed 40 years ago and where we wanted to go, but throughout the journey always remembering that ambition must never be a substitute for character. This pedigreed operation had the patience to think long-term. By this thinking, I believe we became a unique bull selling entity that blended entrepreneurial vitality, unconventional thinking, and operational excellence. Everything happening at Rendezvous Farms is now united by a passionate commitment to success. Our success also lies in earning the trust of our bull and female customers, ensuring that any actions we take to help you reach your goals in obtaining those proper Simmentals for your herds are anchored by our integrity and a shared set of values. For this writer, the ability to do something well and efficiently requires discipline and a strong focus on the goal. Of course it wouldn’t be fair to my readers that I write only about the better hap-penings at this farm without mentioning that yes, we’ve had some washouts, but in those cases we quickly implemented positive plans-to-action.

Our mature herd consisting of some 300 pedigreed Simmental females is constantly on the move having grown substantially from within. Fitting all these puzzle pieces together to originate and develop a purebred livestock herd worthy of respect is an art that only comes through decades of actual real-world pedigreed knowledge. Keep in mind none of us here at Rendezvous are reading from tablets we dragged down the mountain. Suf-ficiently forward-thinking fresh ideas linked with David & Gerald’s swift understanding of the pedigreed world is obviously central to this success.

Our grain and pedigreed livestock operation is situated in Ste Rose du Lac, the official Cattle Capital of Manitoba. Pedigreed livestock operations take years to establish and mature, a lesson I learned as a very young boy while growing up on this family farm. My loving parents, Laurent and Lorraine the founders of Rendezvous Farms taught me early on that the best harvests come only after years of thoughtful planning, planting, and nurturing. Ah, so true. As pedigreed breeders we must also be durable in time with the potential to endure for decades while never losing sight of the reason we are here: to constantly developing better genetics to serve our customers and of course, to earn a fair profit for ourselves.David and Gerald inherited the Maguet family’s agricultural passion, coupled with creativity on display, getting big projects started and then quickly getting those projects completed. David’s successful planned matings at Rendezvous are to some extent like inventions, but I say to invent you have to experiment but if you know in advance that it’s going to work, it is not an experiment.

For us, pedigreed livestock, customer-service and marketing are not ends in themselves. We measure our pedigreed efforts by the success our customers enjoy and the advocacy they exhibit. We are succeeding because they are succeeding and that is powering our growth, thus extending our leadership position of selling Simmental bulls.

Rendezvous has complete trust and confidence in using in its herds only its own walking herdbulls and no AI. Why is that? Well, for the love of all things good and holy, we take herdbull buying seriously. Blacks, Reds, Fullbloods and Heifer Bull herdsires of exceptional quality are sought-after and often purchased for very high dollar amounts. To that end, once purchased, those herdsires are heavily used, therefore canceling the need to use AI or someone else’s high selling bull of a yesterday sale.

In our bull pens you will find a buffet of options to choose from.

I call it Rendezvous’s One-Stop-Convenience-Bull-Store. Friends, few Simmental breeders in Canada can offer at public auction so many ‘yearlings-only’ Simmental bulls. Our Reds, Blacks and Fullblood bulls are deeply-rooted in single calendar year growth and thickness type. Consequently, Rendezvous Farms has become this province’s largest supplier of pedigreed Simmental bulls.

You will also encounter on sale day a group of 53 prime open heifers ready to breed this spring. Friends, don’t be obsessed with trying to figure out whether a market is making a major bottom, a major top, or about to accelerate its trend. I would argue that such an obsession doesn’t build wealth that is sustained. It’s a subtle form of gambling, and gamblers tend to lose money on an ongoing basis. My thoughts are you don’t make your money when you sell, you make your money when you buy. If you buy anything ‘right’ you have a very good chance at future financial gains. Just bring some of our bulls and females back home to your farms. This would make great sense or better yet I’d congratulate you for executive decision-making.

We will do our best to get them to your yard, however, at times, it may be required to meet at central locations. The herdbull battery at Rendezvous Farms have really proven their self worth this year. This is a constant “work in progress” as the search for new bulls never ends at Rendezvous Farms.

The FB section has a bittersweet feel with this being the last sons of “Nero” to sell. Walk proud “Nero” as he has left what may be his strongest group ever, his best effort as his finale! Conversely, the first sons of the $75,000 “Charles” are here and he looks to be worth every penny! The “Charles” sons will be easy to find with their attractive dark red colour, the deep sides, thick tops, big hips and well endowed testicular development.

Moving to the Red Simmi bulls, there are some wonderful performance bulls by “Mandako” and “Red Express”. Just true beef bulls sired by these two that can be used with so much versatility to generate cold hard cash for the commercial cattlemen. Flanking them in this group are a large se-lection of calving ease specialists in the “Rambo” and “Red Caesar” fraternities. This would be one of the largest groups of Red Simmental calving ease bulls to sell anywhere!

The Black Simmental herd is the newest division at Rendezvous Farms but you wouldn’t know it from the comparable quality that exist to the Fullboood and Red Simmental groups. As a matter of fact, the “Western Star” sons are some of the highest gaining, performance driven bulls in the whole offering. Joining them in a soft made moderate package are the sons of “LFE Powershift” whom you will appreciate for their shape and balance.

Once again the opportunity to advance your own replacement heifer pen will be given following the bull sale portion when 50’ish Rendezvous fe-males will be auctioned. These females have gone on to work well for their new owners in the past and why wouldn’t they when they are created from this wonderful cowherd.

IPU Nero 274X has made a name for himself very quickly. The fact that he’s a Polled Fullblood meat machine may be part of the reason. We selected Nero at LaBatte’s in 2011, where he was our pick of the Fullblood bulls that year. A long, smooth made, easy fleshing bull, that’s low set and deep bodied. Nero is extremely well filled in the flank area and travels quite smoothly. Add all of the above plus a pedigree that’s second to none, and it’s no wonder that this bull is doing things right. Nero has taken our Fullblood program by storm, his sons averaged $9375 in our 2014 sale & $9083 in our 2015 sale. This bull is definitely one of the very best Polled Fullblood bulls to walk in North America & has impressed all visitors at the farm. Buy with confidence in his progeny. This will be the last set of sons to sell from Nero.

Homo Polled After losing the IPU Red Caesar 11U bull after only two calf crops, we ended up keeping a son of his, just hoping that he would do what his father did, which was being our main heifer bull. After the first five calves were born, we knew that Caesar 584 would become a permanent fixture at the ranch. A good herd bull always breeds better than himself, point in case is with this Caesar line. Every generation seems to impress us more and more. The calves from Caesar 584 are small at birth, but turn into curve bending growth machines. When touring people in the herd sire pasture, a lot of folks seem to gravitate towards this young herd sire. To make things even better, Caesar 584 is also Homo Polled.

Homo Polled. We’re quite excited with Red Express! He was the lead off bull at Herdmasters 2013. Doug Zimmer had nothing but praise for his mother, especially since Red Express was her first calf. Express was truly one of the thickest, deepest bodied bulls we saw in the spring of 2013. Glen & Kevin Maxwell had big time praise for these Morgan cattle, es-pecially commenting on their docility. Western Star was our pick of their black bulls in 2015 & was their 2nd high seller. I couldn’t get over the length of this bull. He was a foot longer than any other bull around and weighed 1620 at 14 months. This goes back to the old adage: Length = pounds. Solid footed & light on his feet, Western Star has seen heavy service in our black program. When his calves were being born, Gerry felt they were the nicest, most uniform calves he would process at 2 days of age. They were sooo long & correct. We had the honours to raise & sell the high selling Simmental bull in Manitoba in 2016 to the reputable herd of Zdan Farms. We managed to talk Curtis into selling a share back into Hemi 586C as we really wanted to keep the Hemi bloodline alive in our program as we lost his sire at only three years of age. We used Hemi only for our first cycle on select cows & the calves that were born really blew our expectations out of the water. Hemi 586C is a performance powerhouse for the Fullblood business, he puts that extra punch in his progeny & it shows quite easily when strolling through the bull & heifer pens. Without a doubt one of the most talked about bulls to sell in the spring of 2016. Charles was bred by the wonderful people at Lockhart Valley Simmentals, Rimbey, AB. Lee, Tina & Hanna Robson toured us around their farm & made sure to show us the dam of this great bull. Homo Polled. The high selling red bull from the well-respected Kuntz herd is also a maternal brother to the ever-popular calving ease Sheriff bull. We feel Patriot encompasses the similar calving ease traits of his well known brother but also adds a lot of length & growth to his calves all the while maintaining that moderate frame score with good thickness. If I were building a top commercial herd of black cattle, I would build it with bulls like 176E. Here’s a fantastic bull that we think very highly of. A solid black bull who should have some strong maternal traits judging by his pedigree. The Western Star group really stand out as a whole among all the sire groups. The consistency in phenotype & extra length are easy to recognize. We always put a huge emphasis on purchasing & using strong powerful herd bulls. I guess you could say we practice what we preach & it’s been a winning formula for anyone who’s done the same.

We strive to produce quality beef bulls like 156E. He is truly the cookie cutter type we’d use as our template. Thick made, low set, deep ribbed, with loads of length & filled in the flank makes this bull a true gem. The heavyweight of the blacks at weaning time, he rocked the scale at 1120lbs. One of the youngest bulls in the entire offering but he is mothered by perhaps one of our very best red cows. I just can’t say enough about the dam of this bull. She’s the front pasture type that we make a point of showing to anyone who tours around. We have a full sister who’s an impressive bred heifer. A maternal sister to 400E raised one of our high selling Mandako sons in last year bringing $13,000 to Sonny Berndt, ND.

HOMO POLLED These Red Express sons are easy to identify, just look for the darkest possible red color along with a black nose. They calve like a dream; we’ve never used him on heifers however I’m confident he would work. This particular son is a real humdinger, long bodied, deep ribbed with loads of capacity and very good feet. Be sure to have a good long look at this guy. We typically breed the mother of this bull to the Nero bull however she repeated & ended up being bred by Mandako. Well this turned out to be as good of a deal at the end of the day. Believe it or not but this guy is in fact our youngest bull of the entire offering! Yet he stacks right up with the big boys born in January. The more time goes on the more I’m really in awe about how good this bull really is. Look at his rib expression. He’s got girth like a barrel & he stands square with all four legs properly placed underneath him. Thick as a slab of butter, he will sire some outstanding pens of steers. You’ll want to keep all the daughters from this bull as his mother always cranks out the good ones as it’s easy to see with 704E. I just can’t say enough good things about how much the Red Express bull has done for our program & for everyone who’s acquired a son or daughter. This particular bull is full of length, size & dimension. The beauty with these Express cattle is their natural ability to be curve benders, calve easily & then take off & grow like a bumper corn crop. The Icon mother of this bull is a cow we’d be proud to put on the cover of any magazine. A maternal brother is working in Larry McCauley’s good herd out in Lundar, MB.

One has to really stop & look this bull over to appreciate his phenotype. Low set & stocky, very moderate in frame yet thick butted but sports a small head. I like this bull more and more everyday. The dam of this bull is due to calve in early January once again. She’s not the biggest cow but she’s a darn good easy keeping one. Her daughter sold in last year’s sale to Triangle 33 Sim-mentals. Red Express sure stamps them dark colored & 15E is no exception. His Trigger mother is also dark in color. The Red Express mating with our Icon females works wonders every single time. Whether the calf is male or female it’s a win-win formula. A red goggle eyed polled bull who’s dam was just retired last fall at the age of 12 and this being her 11th consecutive calf. Fertility obviously played a very large role in that. We realize this sale is on the earlier side however come breeding time it’s sure a wise choice to have a bit of extra bull power when those unforeseen events can arise since bull shopping in June isn’t fun for anyone.

Every time I see this bull move around he just makes me think of how well his calves will perform in the feedlots. Exceptionally easy keeping with lots of middle & capacity makes this baldy bull a clear winner if you raise steers with the intent of selling them by the pound. A baldy bull who could make the cover of any cattle magazine. A stylish bull with a lot of appeal, his natural muscling is something that truly stands out. Big testicles, a wide hind quarter and a very masculine crest really make this guy pop. With the legendary Bodybuilder bull on the dam’s side, it only sweetens the whole deal. The 551T cow is 11 years old but looks half of that. She has perfect feet & legs and has a good udder with lots of milk.

This Patriot son is real doozey. He’s super thick butted, heavily muscled, wide topped & low set. Talk about the real deal when it comes to this cool blaze faced bull. When looking up his registration paper before writing a few lines, I was dumbfounded to find out that this guy was only born February 19th. When viewing him in the pen with his pen mates you’d believe he was born in January considering his size. A thick butted, stocky, low set & easy moving herd bull in the making. Solid red calving ease prospect who should do well in the heifer pen or with the second calvers. He will be a few days short of his birth date by sale day but that won’t stop him from getting the job done. The Hummer dam did a great job on her second bull calf. Her first son sold in last year’s sale to Mathew Kulbacki of Eden. Be sure to talk to Mathew about his good deals on Net Wrap & Silage plastics!

Here’s an interesting son from our old Caesar sire who’s become somewhat of a legend in this area. One of the most common comments heard when delivering bulls is how well a customer’s Caesar son has done for them. We have a few less Caesar sons on offer as time progresses due to the fact that we are becoming more limited with who we can use him with. This particular bull is extra special. One of our most popular sire groups in recent years has been the Caesar line. They’re well balanced, easy calving, smooth made & have tons of hair. That’s basically 613E in a nutshell. A bull who’s created quite the buzz around here. He’s the kind who would make a mime shriek from excitement. When this guy was born, we knew he’d be special & he hasn’t let us down. A total powerhouse, with so much length, size, depth & thickness nicely packaged in a beautiful color scheme. Arguably one of the best Fullbloods in the offering, dark red with big goggles & no socks. Taking into consideration this bull is only a mid February yet he’s keeping right up with his older pen mates. A bull who could go into any herd and add a lot of positives. We used the Charles bull heavily as a yearling & he managed to breed 30 cows naturally, therefore we have a few younger calves because of that. However at the rate this guy is growing you’d never know he’s March born. POLLED 86E is a pretty neat bull. He’s smooth made, carries himself with a lot of pride & has a great stride. His sire, NUG Clipper, is a bull we purchased from Maxwells in Alberta and used him as clean-up for his first season. We only got a handful of calves but the ones we got have really impressed us, and the two sons selling in the sale are right up there with any other sire group. This particular bull is out of a young deep bodied Nero cow and to make things even more interesting he is Polled. You’ll notice he’s well filled in the flank and has a great conformation. A brother sold in our 2016 sale to Lyle Thorgilsson of Lundar. Lyle and his parents have used Simmentals probably longer than anyone in the Interlake area.

POLLED Perhaps the most powerful Polled Nero son we’ve raised yet. The closer we get to sale day, the more I’m persuaded to retain this fellow for ourselves. A very impressive bull who commands your attention right away. Super thick butted, soggy made, his tremendous depth somewhat overshadows his length, which is an illusion to the eye. Being a February born bull and weaning off his dam at 1040lbs tells us that there’s some length in this guy to enable those kinds of numbers.
