Palm Beach County Selected as the Host for the NCAA Women’s Soccer National Championship

Florida Atlantic University (FAU) and the Palm Beach County Sports Commission have been selected to host the NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer National Championship, known as the Women’s College Cup. The National Championship, scheduled for December 5-7, 2014, will take place at FAU Stadium in Boca Raton. The Women’s College Cup includes the semifinals and championship rounds, culminating the NCAA tournament featuring a field of 64 teams.

FAU was one of 11 universities announced as a finalist by the NCAA selection committee in October. The Committee then conducted site visits to verify that all locations were suitable to host the event. This event will mark the first time that an NCAA Division I National Champion will be crowned in Palm Beach County.

“On behalf of Florida Atlantic University, we are honored to serve as hosts for the 2014 NCAA Women’s College Cup,” said Pat Chun, FAU’s director of athletics. “We thank the Palm Beach County Sports Commission on being great partners. The country is well aware of the great sports destination we have become. This will be yet another opportunity to showcase our wonderful campus and beautiful community.”

FAU Stadium is one of the premier sports venues in Palm Beach County. This venue opened in 2011 and has a seating capacity of 29,491. In addition to the Women’s College Cup, FAU Stadium was recently selected to host the Boca Raton Bowl in 2014, a nationally televised college football bowl game created by ESPN.

FAU Athletics partnered with the Palm Beach County Sports Commission in its proposal to the NCAA and the two will work closely to assure an outstanding event for the participants and fans. “The Palm Beach County Sports Commission is excited to partner with Florida Atlantic University and the NCAA to host the Women’s College Cup at FAU Stadium,” said George Linley, executive director of the Palm Beach County Sports Commission. “Hosting a collegiate national championship solidifies Palm Beach County’s position as a premier sports destination. This is a tremendous event that will showcase Florida Atlantic University, the City of Boca Raton and Palm Beach County on a national stage. We are excited to be home to the 2014 NCAA Women’s College Cup.”

The event is expected to be well received by a local soccer community that supports professional women’s soccer, international soccer, collegiate soccer and outstanding youth leagues. “We are excited to be named the host of the 2014 Women’s College Cup,” said

Patrick Baker, FAU’s head women’s soccer coach. “A lot of people were involved and put a wonderful proposal together. We now have the opportunity to showcase the biggest event in women’s college soccer on our campus. There are a number of great things happening within the FAU Athletic Department and this is a special event for the program, department, University and local community.”

The Women’s College Cup is the pinnacle of collegiate soccer. In addition to hosting the “Final Four” of women’s collegiate soccer, Palm Beach County will be home to the NCAA Fan Fest, which provides an interactive experience for visitors to celebrate the National Championship.

The community benefits will be widespread. Thousands of alumni, students, and soccer enthusiasts will travel to Palm Beach County and Florida Atlantic University to experience the Women’s College Cup. The influx of visitors will provide a significant boost to the

local economy by filling hotels rooms and generating new revenues for restaurants, attractions, and the local business community. The event will be televised live on ESPNU, showcasing Palm Beach County and Florida Atlantic University to a national audience.

Palm Beach County To Host A Marquee International Soccer Match

The United States Women’s National Soccer Team will return to Palm Beach County to face Russia on Saturday, February 8th at FAU Stadium in Boca Raton. The international soccer match is scheduled to kickoff at 3:30pm. The Palm Beach County Sports Commission, the United States Soccer Federation, and Florida Atlantic University are partnering to host this marquee

international match, which represents the second appearance for the United States Women’s National Team in Palm Beach County during the past 14 months. The United States was victorious against China at FAU Stadium on December 15, 2012.

The United States Women’s National Soccer team has not faced Russia in more than a decade. The two teams met last on September 29, 2002, when the United States won 5-1, in Uniondale, New York. The U.S. Women have never lost to Russia with a 5-0-1 all-time record. The United States is the world’s best team, currently ranked #1, in the FIFA women’s world rankings. Russia is a highly competitive team and is ranked #21 in the FIFA women’s world rankings. Both teams are preparing for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup

“It’s always a positive to play countries that we haven’t seen that often,” said U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Tom Sermanni. “The Russians have some talented players and with eight European countries qualifying for the next Women’s World Cup, every country in

that tournament is going to have to navigate some very difficult European opponents.”

The US Women’s Soccer National Team is widely regarded as one of the greatest women sports teams in the history of the United

States. The team has won three consecutive Olympic gold medals, the most recent taking place, in front of 80,203 fans at Wembley Stadium in London.

Palm Beach County is becoming a hotbed for national soccer events. The Palm Beach County Sports Commission recently announced that the NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship will take place at the Seacrest Soccer Complex in Delray Beach on December 1-6, 2014 and the NCAA Women’s Soccer National Championship will take place at FAU Stadium on December 5-7, 2014.

FAU Stadium opened in October 2011 and seats more than 29,000 spectators. FAU Stadium has been home to a number of high profile sporting events, including FIFA international soccer matches and the Major League Lacrosse All Star Game. FAU is home to the only stadium in the United States that offers a picturesque view of the Atlantic Ocean.

Tickets for the soccer match are scheduled to go on sale to the public on Friday, Jan. 10 at 10 a.m. through ussoccer.com, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, at all Ticketmaster outlets throughout South Florida, including Walmart, as well as at the FAU Wally Sanger Athletic Ticket Office at FAU’s Boca Raton campus. The Wally Sanger Athletic Ticket Office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tickets also will be sold the day of the event at FAU Stadium.

After 15 years of being known simply as the “ITC” in Delray Beach, the pro tennis event that has re-branded as the Delray Beach Open by The Venetian® Las Vegas has a new twist.

The 10-day ATP event is still the only one in the world to combine ATP Champions Tour (Feb. 14-16) and ATP World Tour (Feb. 17-23) events at the same venue the same week. But the five-year-old ATP Champions Tour’s new format is one that organizers predict will add an exciting element.

Former world No. 1 Andy Roddick will play his first-ever ATP Champions Tour event on the three-player Team USA that will compete against an international trio led by 2001 Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic. All matches are prescheduled, with the competition coming down to the final day (Sunday, Feb. 16) when all six are in action.

An exciting lineup for the 22nd annual ATP World Tour event features four Top 20 players — American John Isner, Tommy Haas, Kei Nishikori and Kevin Anderson—as well former Top 10 players Janko Tipsarevic, Marin Cilic, Lleyton Hewitt and Marcos Baghdatis. The all-time world No. 1 doubles-playing Bryan Brothers are also returning to Delray Beach.

There’s no shortage of ancillary events, including the Valentine’s Dinner Party on Feb. 14 (tennis and love always go together), Senior Days “Buy One – Get One” ticket promo, Ladies Luncheons and a President’s Day USTA Kidz Festival.
