It is hard to believe that we are already half way through the semester and that mid-term report cards will be distributed in homeroom classes on Tuesday, this week. Aurora High School continues to be a hive of activity and learning. Treaty Week: Last week AHS acknowledged Treaty Week in Ontario, which is held during the first full week in November. Each day, over the morning announcements and in selected classes, students and staff reflected on how our province and country were built upon land treaties that were negotiated with our First Nations. We learned that we all share the benefits and obligations of these treaties. Did you know that Ontario has 46 Treaties and that Aurora falls under the Wil- liams Treaty? Hack2Action: On November 3rd and 4th, three students from AHS joined with students from across YRDSB to collaborate in an ideation process to generate solutions to reduce our carbon footprint. The students worked in cross-school teams to develop their best solution which they had the opportunity to pitch to a panel of distinguished judges. Throughout the process, students were mentored by entrepreneurs and representatives from the Ministry of the Environment. The judges selected five teams to receive further mentorship and pitch again at the YRDSB Quest Conference on Friday, November 18. The AHS team consisted of Eco Council members Elise Galloro (grade 9), Chris Walker (grade 11) and Luke Spanuolo (grade 12) with the support of Ms. Batthish. What Hack2Action looks like... Lest we forget: On Friday, November 11 we commemorated Remembrance Day. Throughout the week, the school was decorated with posters and displays that recognized the role of Canada and Canadians in WW1 and 11 and in modern peacekeeping duties around the world. The school community gathered in the morning for two thoughtful and moving presentations that brought together the talents of Music and Drama classes and included guest speaker, Claude Pelletier. Mr. Pelletier is a 35-year career Canadian forces soldier who has served all over the world in- cluding Haiti, Bosnia, and twice in Afghanistan. A very special thank you to Mr. Steep and the staff and students involved, for creating this opportunity for us to remember and reflect. Nothing but our best: On Saturday, No- vember 5, six athletes from AHS competed in the OFSAA cross-country championships at Trinity College School in Port Hope. We had many outstanding performances. Special congratulations to our six runners for making it to this prestigious event. They are Yas- meen Al-Kas, Victoria Gallagher, Syd- ney Haws, Alex Irvine, Alison Mills and Cami Ormond Aurora High congratulates Cami Ormond for her incredi- ble OFSAA victory and achievement.
