A message from the Principal
We are well into the month of November. It is hard to believe that we are already half way
through the semester and that mid-term report cards will be distributed in homeroom classes on
Tuesday, this week. Aurora High School continues to be a hive of activity and learning.
Treaty Week: Last week AHS acknowledged Treaty Week in Ontario, which is held during the
first full week in November. Each day, over the morning announcements and in selected classes,
students and staff reflected on how our province and country were built upon land treaties that
were negotiated with our First Nations. We learned that we all share the benefits and obligations
of these treaties. Did you know that Ontario has 46 Treaties and that Aurora falls under the Wil-
liams Treaty?
Hack2Action: On November 3rd and 4th, three students from AHS joined with students from
across YRDSB to collaborate in an ideation process to generate solutions to reduce our carbon
footprint. The students worked in cross-school teams to develop their best solution which they
had the opportunity to pitch to a panel of distinguished judges. Throughout the process, students
were mentored by entrepreneurs and representatives from the Ministry of the Environment. The
judges selected five teams to receive further mentorship and pitch again at the YRDSB Quest
Conference on Friday, November 18. The AHS team consisted of Eco Council members Elise
Galloro (grade 9), Chris Walker (grade 11) and Luke Spanuolo (grade 12) with the support of
Ms. Batthish.
What Hack2Action looks like...
Lest we forget: On Friday, November 11 we commemorated Remembrance Day. Throughout
the week, the school was decorated with posters and displays that recognized the role of Canada
and Canadians in WW1 and 11 and in modern peacekeeping duties around the world. The school
community gathered in the morning for two thoughtful and moving presentations that brought
together the talents of Music and Drama classes and included guest speaker, Claude Pelletier.
Mr. Pelletier is a 35-year career Canadian forces soldier who has served all over the world in-
cluding Haiti, Bosnia, and twice in Afghanistan. A very special thank you to Mr. Steep and the
staff and students involved, for creating this opportunity for us to remember and reflect.
Nothing but our best: On Saturday, No-
vember 5, six athletes from AHS competed
in the OFSAA cross-country championships
at Trinity College School in Port Hope. We
had many outstanding performances. Special
congratulations to our six runners for making
it to this prestigious event. They are Yas-
meen Al-Kas, Victoria Gallagher, Syd-
ney Haws, Alex Irvine, Alison Mills and
Cami Ormond
Aurora High congratulates Cami Ormond for her incredi-
ble OFSAA victory and achievement. Cami is undefeated
in OFSAA cross-country competitions. This marks the
second year in a row that she has achieved an OFSAA
victory. It was truly an outstanding performance. Con-
gratulations to the team, to Cami and to the coach, Mr.
Steep.
AHS School Council: The next School Council meeting will take place on Monday, Novem-
ber 28 from 7:00 - 9:00 pm in the school library. The elected Council Executive includes:
Co-Chairs: Penny Marrett and Elizabeth Leclaire
Co- Secretaries: Michele Davidson and Debbie Wilmshurst
We continue to welcome new and returning parent members to the council.
I wish you a wonderful week! Please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. I wel-
come your comments or questions.

Full Disclosure Date for Dropping a Semester One Course
Tuesday November 22nd is the last day for any Grade 11 or 12 student to drop a course under the
“full disclosure” policy. If a course is dropped after the full disclosure date, the course taken or
attempted by the Grade 11 or 12 student will be recorded on the Ontario Student Transcript. The
transcript will reflect the percentage grade earned, at the time of the course being dropped.
Transmission of Academic Data to Post-Secondary Institutions
(OCAS: Ontario College Application Service & OUAC: Ontario University Application
Centre)
Personal and academic data has recently been forwarded to both OCAS and the OUAC for all
potential college and university applicants. A reminder that colleges do collect midterm marks
for semester one, whereas the universities do not.
Scholarship Bulletin Board
Grade 12 students are encouraged to review the scholarship bulletin board outside of Guidance
for potential application opportunities. This board is regularly updated when new information
arrives to our school.
SHAD - UNCOMMON PURPOSE
SHAD is a registered Canadian charity that empowers exceptional high school students – at a
pivotal point in their education – to recognize their own capabilities and envision their extraordi-
nary potential as tomorrow’s leaders and change makers. Each year, SHAD provides the opportu-
nity for 700+ students from across Canada and internationally to attend a month-long summer
program, in-residence at one of our Canadian host universities, focused on STEAM (science,
technology, engineering, arts & math).
Students selected through the rigorous, competitive process for places in the summer program are
top performers who are also well-rounded emerging leaders demonstrating initiative, creativity
and flair. They are leaders in their schools, volunteers in their communities, and are often gifted
musicians, artists and athletes.
For more information, please go to: http://shad.ca/About.htm.
Community Hours
Students who have yet to complete their 40 community involvement hours are reminded to regu-
larly check our community involvement bulletin board outside of the Guidance Office. Students
should always have their potential hours pre-approved in Guidance to ensure the activity fits the
description of being a non-profit and/or charitable organization.
