Mr. and Mrs. Alvarado Jimenez would like to reduce their living space to only including a master bedroom and bathroom, a minimal kitchen, and a comfortable living room. The rest of the square footage will be used for office space for both husband and wife as well as a gallery setting are in which Mr. Alvarado Jimenez can showcase and share his personal collection of archeological artifacts. This space will also be used by Mrs. Garcia de Alvarado to showcase some of the artwork created by the homeless people whom participate in the non-profit charities and foundations that Mrs. Garcia de Alvarado is a part of. Therefore, the majority of the office space should be designed to suitably entertain guests for both Mr. and Mrs. Alvarado Jimenez. The office space should have a separate main entry as well as a smaller private access link to the residential portion of the apartment. In both the residential and office areas, the designer must take into account the Alvarado family heritage. Both husband and wife are from Argentina and are therefore appreciate and are most comfortable with the French style that is most common in the home country. Also, as this couple continues to age, their medical needs will be increasing. Therefore, the new apartment should take this into account when spacing as well as finishes are chosen. Design Concept Statement This apartment is designed to be suitable and comfortable for this hard-working couple. While only the Alvarado family’s heritage plays a deep role in the overall design of the apartment, the French style of the whole apartment includes ornately decorated ceilings, painted paneled door, parquet flooring, and sparkling chandeliers. The apartment provides the home as well as the office space with the desired motif effect. While only a portion of the overall square footage of the apartment, this area is encompassed with elegance and peace. A curved living room arranged with antique accent tables keeps with the French taste. Fauteuil chairs are seated around an ornate area rug and facing the tall windows looking out over the city of Santa Barbara, California. The master bedroom is large but not vast and empty. A small reading corner provides the couple with a quiet place to withdraw and read or talk. The bathroom is spacious and can easily be modified to include grab bars if it becomes necessary for the couple to have ADA accessibility. It is installed with a beautiful custom made vanity that provides no only sinks for both him and her but also a sitting area convenient for the preparation process of getting ready for the day.
