PLANTING THROUGHOUT THE SITE WILL BE DROUGHT TOLERANT, LOW MAINTENANCE TREES, GRASSES AND GROUND COVERS DESIGNED TO REFLECT THE SITES RIPARIAN PAST BUT ALSO A MORE SUSTAINABLE FUTURE. AFTER MANY YEARS OF STEADY INDUSTRIALIZATION, FOLLOWED BY A A BRIEF PERIOD OF STAGNATION, FALSE CREEK, WITH IT'S STUNNING VIEWS AND RAMSHACKLE MIX OF HISTORIC INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS HAS BEGUN A TRANSITION TOWARDS A MORE POST-INDUSTRIAL, SUSTAINABLE URBAN REVITALIZATION . THE ENTRY TO MOUNTAIN EQUIPMENT CO-OP HAS BEEN DESIGNED AS AN URBAN PLAZA, ABLE TO HOST A RANGE IT ACTIVITIES SUCH AS SEATING, EXERCISE, PRODUCT TESTING AND COMMUNITY EVENTS . THE ENTRY SEQUENCE IS MARKED BY A SPECIALTY PAVING AREA AND ROCK GARDEN THAT IDENTIFIES THE MAIN ENTRY AND PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR CUSTOMERS AND VISITORS TO MOUNTAIN EQUIPMENT CO-OP, TO ENGAGE VISITORS AND IDENTIFY THE MAIN ENTRY TO THE BUILDING. THE GRAVEL-LAID WATER FEATURE COMMEMORATES THE ONCE GREAT SALMON RUNS THAT PASSED THROUGH THE FLATS AND TO THE URBAN STREAMS BEYOND. THE “WEIR-ED" PORTIONS OF THE WETLAND EMBODY THE TRAVELLING WATER FROM UPPER FALSE CREEK TO THE FORMER SHORE. CLASS B BICYCLE PLACED ALONG THE SOUTH SIDE OF FIRST AVENUE IN A LINE TO ENSURE A RANGE OF TRAVEL OPTIONS. MATERIALS THE CLIENT RECOGNIZES THAT THE SRW ALONG QUEBEC STREET IS FOR A FUTURE BIKE LANE AND ROAD DEDICATION. THIS FACT, LED US TO PROPOSE THAT THE STREET TREES BE LOCATED AT THEIR FINAL LOCATION ALONG THE BIKE LANE, IN ORDER TO MIXED WASTE AND COST WHILE ALLOWING THE TREES TO GROW TO FULL MATURITY WITHOUT BEING RELOCATED. THE CLIENT WOULD ALSO LIKE TO PROPOSE AN ENLARGED PATIO SPACE ALONG AT THE SW CORNER OF THE SITE FOR MEC EVENTS AND OTHER COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES, WITH A GREEN SPACE OF MEADOW GRASS AND SEASONAL BULBS TO THE NORTH-WEST. FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AND AESTHETIC REASONS THE CLIENT WOULD PREFER A NATIVE, SEASONAL MEADOW ALLOWED TO GROW LONG AND CHANGE COLOUR SEASONALLY TO AN IRRIGATED, MOWED LAWN THAT WOULD USE LARGE AMOUNTS OF WATER AND REQUIRE REGULAR MOWING.
