formation of the Red Devils in Nelson. There is no doubt the intention was to ultimately morph into a chapter of the Hells Angels and entrench themselves in the organised crime network in New Zealand.“Our intention was to ensure that did not occur and as a result of this operation we have done that.”Also seized in the raids were 13 motor-cycles, 16 firearms, large quantities of stolen meat, butter and milk, nine cars, computers and a variety of other drugs. Thirty two people, mainly from Nelson, were arrested in the raids for various of-fenses, including 120 drug charges alone. Other charges were being a member of an organised crime group, arson, assault, theft, burglary, receiving stolen property and unlawful possession of a firearm.Police intend to hand possession of the

gang pad, at Nelson’s Natalie St, to the crown and say many of the gangs assets were from the proceeds of crime.“What today’s operation and previous operations have shown is that trafficking of various drugs, including class A drugs like methamphetamine is a ongoing use of the organised crime network, to dis-tribute drugs, import drugs and keep drugs available for users,” says Rob.All 11 gang members and some associ-ates, in cells since Friday, will appear at a special sitting in front of Judge Toohey who is being flown in from the North Island. Police are opposing bail for all of them.Police also issued 43 infringement no-tices during the annual poker run on Sat-urday, which is organised by members of the Red Devils.Rob says he is happy with the result of the raids and promised they would not be the last.

NEWS IN BRIEF• Nelson City Council has reached a conditional agreement to buy the Mailtai Club building for $455,000. Council already owns the land it sits on and the deal is subject to approval in the draft 2011/12 Annual Plan which is due to be released for public comment on 25 March.

• The final stage of the Nelson Arterial Traffic Study Stage, which will offer a recommended op-tion for planning Nelson’s transport future, will be released in the second half of April, Nelson City Council announced last week. The report will recommend the best way forward. Among the options still on the table is the Southern Link, through Victory and widening of Rocks Rd.

• More Police will be on the frontline due to a restructure now under way, says Inspector Brian McGurk. “This restructure is all about working smarter... ultimately that means reducing crime and road crashes.”

Lowest rate rise in years, says NCCThis year’s rise in rates is the lowest in almost 20 years, says Nelson City Council. The 2.5 percent rise, due to come into affect this July, is being hailed as a massive achievement by its chief executive, Keith Marshall. “Notwithstanding various com-mentaries about the proposed rate rises, actually this is the lowest in 19 years. “That’s pretty impressive really, the proposed low overall rate rise is a major achievement.”The proposed rise in rates is a part of this year’s draft annual plan, open for public comment from March 25. Although the rise is low compared to previous

years, Keith acknowledges there are other proposed rises that may affect some ratepayers. “Obviously, the ac-tual increase in rates for any prop-erty, whether residential or com-mercial, will vary according to the current land value and the impact of the various general rates, water and stormwater charges,” he says.Council is also introducing a 15 per-cent increase in marina charges, up-setting many boaties but bringing it in line with spending and prices in other marinas, says Keith.“It seemed timely to propose a raise

in marina fees given the massive capital invest-ment taking place alongside the very low levels of the current fees.”

A brand spanking new exhibit is steaming its way to Found-ers Heritage Park.‘Mind the Gap? The Story of Nelson’s Unfinished Railway’ which traces the 80 year his-tory of Nelson’s railway will be opened by the Nelson City Council this Friday. The exhibit shows the historic timeline of the railway ser-vice from an enthusiastic start through to the recessions and service cuts that spelled its ul-timate demise. The display focusses on the positive memories of Nelson locals who would catch the train to school or out to the splendour countryside for weekend outings.

The opening marks the cul-mination of six months col-laboration between Founders and the Nelson community. In spring last year, a work-man’s cottage was generously donated to the heritage park by Graham and Joy Shirley. The transformation from a workman’s cottage to a rail-way cottage was then made possible with the support of significant sponsorship from local businesses, including Asphalt and General, Smiths Cranes, Perriam Enterprises, Placemakers on Saxton Rd, Colonial Landscapes, Thir-kettle Nurseries, Readylawn and Freemans Roofing. Mind the Gap? The Story of

Nelson’s Unfinished Railway also marks the curatorial de-but of Joanna Szczepanski. Joanna recently graduated with an MA in Museum Stud-ies and is working at Found-ers Heritage Park through the ‘Young Canada Works Building Careers in Heritage’ graduate employment pro-gramme. “I am very grateful for all the help and support I have received in putting this exhibit together, from coun-cil, Founders staff, and the Nelson community in gen-eral. The history of Nelson’s railway is a very interesting story and I am glad I was able to share it with the commu-nity,” says Joanna.

“Quirky, cute and something dif-ferent” is how the mother-daughter owners of Black Cat Vintage de-scribe their vintage, retro and an-tique collectable store.Rachel and Sarah opened their doors, next to the Black Cat dairy on Annesbrook Drive, in Novem-ber and say they are delighted with the response they have received. “We’re so pleased, people love the store and we’ve already got a lot of repeat cus-tomers,” says Sa-rah.Rachel says their shop is a gift and home wares store “but everything is old”. It is a sec-ond hand shop but you would never know it. They take great care and pride in making sure all their stock is immaculate. “It’s like buying brand new stuff, but in a time warp. We are really fussy,” says Sarah.Rachel says their products are also very reasonably priced. “We have English China that has been used

for 50 years and will last another 50 years and most of it at a compara-ble price with brand new. You can buy a set of hand painted bowls that were made in the 1950’s for about the same price you would buy a set of bowls in a chain store.”Of course shopping for used items is also environmentally friendly and Sarah and Rachel are always looking to buy, so if you have some

vintage items that you would like to sell, pop in and see them. Black Cat Vintage has home decor, collecta-bles, jewellery, clothes and furni-ture and they would love to see you. There’s plenty of parking at rear.

Riverside pool turns back the clockRiverside pool will be one of the focal points for this year’s Heritage Week and manager Dave Mc-Kenzie is hoping to come to the party by display-ing photos of the historic pools. Now all he needs is the photos.Dave says the pool was opened in 1927, at the time one of the best in the country, but he has few photos of how the pools looked and is hop-ing people will come forward with any he can use.“Basically we want to get a hold of anything that tells the story of the pool and what it was like. Any photographs over the years would be much ap-preciated.”Riverside was an outdoor pool until the 1980’s and even had an underground viewing area,

where spectators could look through thick glass in the bottom of the pool to the swimmers. Dave says he is keen to hear any stories about how the pools were. “It has a fascinating history and it would be great to learn more and share that with other residents. We are hoping our display during Heritage Week will be really popular.”During the week Riverside will have several pro-motions, including free entry on one of the days. More information will follow in next week’s Nel-son Weekly. If you have photos or would like to get in touch with Dave please phone him on 546 3221 or email him at [email protected].

Thousands of dollars worth of prizes are ready to be scooped up at the Child Cancer Founda-tion’s Big Dig this weekend. iPods and a bicycle are the ma-jor prizes although Spiderman and Transformers toys along with boardgames and books will be popular amongst chil-dren. There are hundreds of prizes to win.The Big Dig at Tahunanui Beach was postponed from last Satur-day due to tsunami warnings from the Civil Defence.Funding and business develop-ment manager for the Child Cancer Foundation, Amanda Nicolle, says the number of peo-ple that turned up last weekend

despite the postponment shows there was plenty of interest and expected all of those and more to turn up this Sunday. “I think people understood why we postponed the day. I’ve checked the long range weather forecast and it looks like Nelson will do its thing again this week-end and give us a sunny day,” says Amanda. The Big Dig is for children from pre-school through to their tweens. As all prizes are de-signed for recipients three to 12 years-old.The Big Dig has been re-sched-uled for this Sunday at 3.00pm on Tahunanui Beach at the Abel Tasman carpark area of the

beach.Entry is $5 and once you get a prize you must pay again if you wish to continue digging for more. But there are enough prizes for everyone and there is a huge variety of prizes suited for boys and girls, says Amanda.Children will come away happy with their prizes as each one is worth more than the five dol-lar entry fee, some considerably more.Tokens will be placed in the shallow of the sand and compe-titiors must dig with their body only - shovels are not permitted. All the money raised on the day will go towards the Child Can-cer Foundation.

When Nelson woman Ana Stevenson had a chance encounter with “TroppoDoc” Derek Allen, she never anticipated it would be a life-changing one.But next month Ana will leave her husband in charge of the kids and jet off to Bolivia with Dr Derek for three weeks and learn more about his lifetime crusade to help save children in poorer countries and see what she can do to help.“I’ve been inspired,” she says. “And I felt a lit-tle hopeless and helpless being non-medical but then I brought my sales and marketing skills and practical motherhood skills to the table and realized I can be of use.”Derek says from the age of eight he knew he wanted to be a doctor and help children. His dream never wavered and after completing medical school and the required three years work to be registered in New Zealand, he was off, travelling to south-east Asia, Africa and South America. He has been volunteering around the world for 24 years.Derek now runs an organisation of volunteers that work around the world, saving thousands of lives – many with basic medicine that is free-ly available in New Zealand but harder to access in third world countries.Ana sees her role as one to help recruit volun-teers and give TroppoDoc a voice in his native land.“I only come home once-in-a-while when I need to find some more volunteers or earn some more money,” says Derek, who pays for his own travel and does not draw a cent from donated money. “But the challenge is finding

people to network for me in New Zealand because I would rather be out there working, saving lives every day.” Ana has “dragged” Derek into the modern age, setting up a facebook page and organising flyers and informa-tion packs since they met. So far several Nelsonians have

agreed to spend a month volunteering, includ-ing two NMIT nursing students.Derek says he encourages people to give up a month every two years and currently has around 50 volunteers who spend time with him each year.“I don’t expect people to come forever but a month every two years seems doable and we have a lot of doctors and nurses that do that. Now I’m just trying to build that base of vol-unteers.”It isn’t just for medical staff either, Derek says anyone with skills is welcome. And that is where Ana fits in. “I feel I can’t take it any further until I’ve been on the coalface, so to speak, and have felt it, experienced it and watched Derek work and then I can better ex-plain it to people.”Ana will also photograph her experience to provide more marketing tools and to help up-date Derek’s website. Although, Ana does ad-mit the trip will not be all work. “It’s a great opportunity to do something intrepid that most people pay for and get that kind of expe-rience. I’m very excited about it.”Derek says 9000 children die a day worldwide and admits his cause will never be finished but says the more people who are willing to help, the better chance he has making a difference.“It’s always nice to have pivotal people, pivotal

people of doctors and if we can get some more of them we can go to the next level and cast the net even wider.”Ana is due to leave April 11. For more information visit www.troppodoc.com or call 027 446 7744.

Museum gains valuable info for collectionNelson Provincial Museum chief Peter Millward says valuable information has been gained by its glass plate project series, running in Nelson Weekly. Each week two images from its collection run in Nelson and Waimea Weekly with the goal of gaining more information about the photo-graphs – which often have little or no details at-tached to them.Peter says several images have spurred a wave of feedback, a benefit of getting to over 30,000 homes with the two papers. “Very early on we had contact with a Golden Bay resident who not only recognised the portrait of her great grand-father but was in a position to provide a signifi-cant amount of family history information.“Another image that encouraged a lot of feedback from a local resident was the one that showed a group of people standing around two vintage racing motor cycles. On this occasion the person was able to provide the names of every person in the photo which included Percy Coleman a very well known motor cycle racer from the 1930s. We now believe the photo was taken in 1938 at Richmond Racecourse during one of a series of grass track race meetings. Further research sug-gests these daring racers achieved speeds of over 100mph on one mile long grass tracks,” he says. The images will continue to run on both com-munity newspapers until the supply of photo-graphs is exhausted, something that may take some time says Peter, as the collection has thou-sands of images. The images have been taken from negatives in the Museum’s archive that have been photographed and stored within the museum’s collection.Peter says several other images have provoked response. “Two people have offered information about the image of the nurses and two about the most recent Maitangi image. The information does need to be verifiable and quite often peo-ple provide other images related to the person in question or details about the event or a building that is included in the image. This kind of information is invaluable not only in terms of identifying people places and events but it makes the image many times more useful in terms of illustrating ideas for exhibitions and publications and in aiding the research of local historians and genealogists.”This week’s photographs appear on page 16.

ROAD SAFETY: Victory’s Micheal Creswell was presented with an informa-tion pack by Sergeant John Maxwell and Roadsafe Nelson’s Jen Trow last week in an attempt to reduce the risk to motorbike drivers. Photo: Teresa Hattan.

Protecting those most vulnerable on our roads is the aim of local police and council in a new joint initiative.A road safety drive at Nayland College and on Nelson’s roads last week ensured those driving motorbikes and mopeds received an important message. Sergeant John Max-well says he wants to get across to these rid-ers that they aren’t invincible and visibility is important. Courses aimed at up-skilling riders are being provided by Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council, ACC and Roadsafe Nelson. These courses are being held on April 2 for intermediate riders and April 3 for advanced riders or those need-ing a refresher. For more information phone Krista Hobday on 543-8551.

Oliver Perks has had to wait a year to see his trolley design come to fruition, but he says the wait has been worth it and he is now excited at the prospect of hurtling down Collingwood St in it.Oliver won the Redbox Kids’ Trol-ley Design Challenge at last year’s Trolley Derby after submitting a design for trolley. His prize was to have the trolley built and he, along with his dad and trolley club presi-dent Tim Bayley, have been work-ing on it for the past few weeks.

After entering for the past few years Oliver says he has yet to claim a win on his “slow” trolley, but is con-fident his new trolley will do the trick. “It’s really streamlined and will go quick,” he says. The Robertson’s Trolley Derby is being held next weekend at Colling-wood St. Oliver says he is amped about get-ting back on the track. “We were a bit worried that it wouldn’t go ahead this year but it is and I’m re-ally excited about it.”

Nayland College students haulled a massive 21 scholarships after the NCEA exams at the end of last year, the strongest tally in the school’s recent history.Kimberely Savill, 17, was one of three students to receive a New Zealand scholarship for out-standing results in three scholarship subjects. She, along with Caitlin Attenburrow and Mi-chael Falloon, will receive $3000 per year to-wards study at any New Zealand university for three years. But what makes Kimberely’s efforts even more outstanding is the fact she was only year 12 last year. That means she can attempt different scholarship subjects in her final year of secondary school this year and has the opportunity to receive even more money as a reward.Kimberely passed Chemistry, French and Eng-lish scholarship exams in 2010.

“I was amazed because I didn’t think I had done that well,” she says. “I was just amazed to have passed that many. I didn’t realize how much money I had won because I was away debating.”She entered in the scholarship exams with a nothing to lose mindset, knowing that it was good practice for this year. But now Kimberely will try to attempt the Cal-culus scholarship exam at the end of the year and has the chance to attempt subjects she did not study last year.Having been a year ahead of her studies through-out her time at Nayland, Kimberely will now take part in a mathematics course provided by the University of Canterbury while she is still at school.Nayland College Principal Rex Smith says the scholarships were a great reward for both stu-dents and teachers as it was an area targeted at the start of the previous year.

Rotary offers a chance to explore Nelson’s iconic Boulder Bank

TAKING IN THE BANK: Martin Holmes, of Catamaran Sailing Charters, and Dick Carter, of Nelson West Rotary, are pairing up to lead a walk across the Boulder Bank. Photo: Sarah Delaney.

Walkers have an opportunity to get a closer look at one of Nelson’s icon-ic landmarks this weekend. The Rotary Club of Nelson West is organising its second fundraising walk of the Boulder Bank this Sun-day, after last year’s event was such a hit.Organiser Dick Carter says the three hour walk is an opportunity for people to learn more about the rare boulder bank and also gain access to the lighthouse which sits on it. Taking place this Sunday, the 3.8km walk will be finished off with a boat ride back to Wakefield Quay.Tickets cost $20 per person and are now available at TSB Bank in Nelson with all proceeds going to the Nelson Volunteer Coastguard.

Food will be available for sale at a BBQ at the Lighthouse and debris can be collected by walkers and left at pick up points for bringing ashore. In the event of rough weather the event will be rescheduled to Sunday 3 April and tickets purchased will transfer to that date. For more in-formation call Dick Carter on 027 239 0866.

Congratulations to Nayland Primary for their 50th Anniversary

Nayland Primary School is gearing up for one heck of a party. The school is set to celebrate its 50th anniversary on April 8 and 9 with a dinner, tour of the school and other dis-plays. And it’s not too late to register. The Anniversary is open to all former students, teachers, parents and friends of the school.Nayland Primary opened its doors in 1961 to children across Stoke and wider Nelson region after Stoke School was packed with children in the growing suburb.

The school opened with a roll of 105 children ranging from new entrants to standard three. There was a staff of three and it was officially opened by the minister of education, Blair Tennent. All foundation pupils were presented with a commemorative certificate and special certificates were presented the first boy and girl enrolled, Donald Lumsden and Kathleen Mintrom, and to the first five year old enrolled, Nola Simes. The school grew rapidly and by 1975 it had a roll of 763 pupils, ironically, putting Nayland in a similar position to

Stoke School before it opened. However, the opening of Birchwood School drastically cut the roll by almost 300 students. The school has remained a focal point of the community though and principal Janice Gulbransen says it will be a great weekend in the school’s history. “It’s an important milestones and I’m really excited to be a part of these celebrations “It’s a chance for people to come to-gether and celebrate their school days, we all talk about our school days being our best so this is a good chance to relive those and spare the past, remember the people and

remember the good times.“It is also an opportunity to continue to create community in our school. Nayland is a school, it has its community and it is a part of everything that happens here.”The reunion starts on Friday April 8 with an in-

formal drink and din-ner at the Honest Lawyer before activities run all day on Saturday. Activi-ties include: a powhiri and formal welcome, com-memorative tree planting, classes in action at the school, morning team and commencement of class photos, displays and en-tertainment, more photos and speeches. Chairperson Alan Ching says the school has seen a lot of changes over the years. “We would love to see peo-ple come along to the cel-ebrations, relive memories

and reminisce with school mates and teachers.”Janice says it’s important that those coming have plenty of time to interact and catch up. “We made sure the sched-ule isn’t too heavy so that people can catch up and enjoy the day and enjoy each other’s company.”So far more than 80 peo-ple have registered for the anniversary weekend and Janice says people can find out more about the reunion by contacting the school or visiting its web-site www.naylandprimary.school.co.nz.

diaryThe Harbour Master’s

Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

• Four large container vessels, four movements of large fishing vessels, several smaller fishing vessels, a rig tender on the slipway, a tanker, two log vessels meant good activity within the port.• Whilst conducting one of the log vessels and later a container vessel from the berth through The Cut, I had the experience of a yacht and a launch transiting The Cut as I approached on each occasion. The dif-ficulty for the pilot is the uncertainty of the actions of the skipper of the other vessel in this very narrow channel whilst piloting a very difficult to manoeuvre ship. This difficulty will be addressed and hopefully minimised within the content of the future by-laws. In the meantime I would ask all skippers of any

small craft , by comparison, to delay their transit through the narrow cut should they observe a ship approaching.• If they don’t observe the ship then I must query whether or not they are keeping a “proper lookout” as required by the national maritime regulations.• It is gratifying, although there was less traffic on the water, that our staff only spoke to a few this week about speeding close to shore. A reminder that the speed limit is 5 knots within two hundred meters of the shore, or within 50 meters of another vessel or swimmer.• As the weather changes and the water temperature drops I would like to share this gentle reminderIf in doubt… don’t go out.

Lindsay Twiname, Heather Thomas, Peta Raggett and Rene Brown of the Citizens Advice Bureau. The Citizens Advice Bureau is unveiling a new look on St Patricks’s Day, a day picked because “we reckon if Murphy had known about CAB, his life would have been a whole lot simpler.”CAB will launch its new logo, signs, database and website this Thursday but Heather Thomas says it will still provide the same free, non-judgmental, caring service to anyone who needs an answer or information. The launch will be at the CAB at 9 Paru Paru Rd in Nelson from 5:15, or at the Bowater Toyota showroom if wet. Heather says CAB plays an important role in the community and she is thrilled to be showing off its new logo. Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne and Nelson councilor Gail Collingwood will reveal the new logo. Heather says the group is also on the hunt for volunteers, for more information call CAB on 548 2117 or email [email protected].

FooTbAll: A youthful Nelson Suburbs side picked up two pre-season victories in Wel-lington over the weekend. In the first match, Nelson defeated Central Premier League side Western Suburbs 3-2 with Darrell Hannah, Jerry Donga and Ryan Yates getting on the scoresheet. Darrell impressed the following day, scoring a brace against the Ole’ Academy in a 4-2 victory. Nelson sides will compete at the Pre-season Tournament at Jubilee Park on March 26 with all proceeds going towards the Christchurch earthquake fund.

SWIMMING: A number of Nelson swimmers picked up strong results at the Mayfair Pools New Zealand Age Grade Championship. Nelson South’s Ellie Rukuwai earned herself two medals after finishing second in the Girls 13 100m breaststroke and third in the 50m breaststroke. Fraser Neill had some credible finishes in the pool, making the final of the Boys 15 indivudal medley, 200m butterfly, 400m freestyle and William Borrell made the final in both the Boys 14 50m butterfly and 100m butterfly.

CYClING: A decisive break at Dovedale gave Tom Filmer the incentive to push on to win Sunday’s Tussock Spirit of the Moutere bike ride. Tom powered up to the Neudorf Saddle to lead by 25 seconds and he pedalled on to win in 1 hour 36 minutes 03 seconds from Matthew Black and Grant Ward who headed home the peloton. The women’s race came down to the final hill-top finish along Dominion Road where Eliza-beth Roberts took out the sprint.100 riders completed the picturesque Mou-tere Valley Circuit.

IN BRIEF

Stoke/Nayland through to cricket final

NEAR MISS: Stoke/Nayland wicketkeeper Mitchell Drummond watches the ball fly past the off stump of a Waimea College batsman at the Marsden Rec on Saturday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Stoke/Nayland have battled its way through to the Kelvin Scoble one-day final after a comprehensive victory over Waimea College on Saturday.Winning the toss and electing to bat, Car Company Stoke/Nayland looked confident from the get go and reached a total of 322/6 after their allotted 50 overs with the willow.Ben Homan top scored for the home side with 70 runs while the experienced Mark Douglas contributed 69. There were also handy additions from Paul Capstick, 34, while Mitchell Drummond and Peter Younghusband’s knocks in-creased the tally significantly. But it was a slick team performance with the ball that cemented their final berth. Ben and Nathan Todd claimed three wickets a piece and stunned the Waimea run-rate, which eventually trotted along to 186 all out.Stoke/Nayland captain Ryan Edwards says his team are confident heading in to the final against Hot Mama’s Motueka this Sunday. “We’re playing some pretty good cricket at the moment after obvi-ously a pretty good win over College on the weekend.” Ben and Mark will carry some impor-tant form through to the final, while the return of Peter into the bowling attack makes him an obvious threat against Motueka’s batsmen, who the skipper rates as the best battling lineup in the competition by a “long way.”Stoke/Nayland will be out to clinch the title they lost last year and their semi-final was the perfect dress rehersal. “To have a score of 300 leading in to a final is really good and our bowlers will always do a good job.”The final will be played at Saxton Oval with play starting at 11am.

Nelson businesses have raised more than $2000 for the Christchurch earthquake relief fund, by stepping onto the football pitch.Eight teams from several businesses entered teams in the six-a-side social tournament, organised by Stefan Herburst. The goal was to have a bit of fun and raise whatever it could for the Christchurch earthquake fund say Stefan.“When it happened I really wanted to do something and thought this was really the best thing I could do.”Since coming up with the idea less than two weeks ago, Stefan recruited friend Hayden Bryant, of Sport Tasman, into help organise the day.He says he was rapt to have local businesses get in-volved, including a team from Nelson Weekly. “It was a great day, I’m really happy. Everyone played it in a fun and social manner and that’s what we wanted, to have some fun.”Other businesses to enter were Brightwater Engi-neers, Opus and Tonkin Taylor, Nelson Hospital, MWH and Goldpine. While the Nelson Weekly team did not win the com-petition, it did hold eventual champions, the Bogans, to a draw in the first game of the day. It was all down-hill from there for the Weekly though. The Bogans took out the final against Hospital Pass in a penalty shootout. The game finished scoreless af-ter regulation time with the Bogans gaining the win from the spot.Another football tournament is also raising money for Christchurch. The annual preseason tournament, hosted by Richmond Athletic, will raise money for the earthquake fund, although it will be in a slightly different vein, with senior teams using it as a warm up for the football season.

The Tasman Cycling Team collected eight medals at the national champion-ship in Invercargill. They are from left; Grant Kerrr and Grant Jones (support), Kristoff Ford, Olivia Miller, Michaela Kerr, Warrick Spence, Joel McMillan, Cameron Ford, Liam Julian, Daniel El-lison, Matt Black, Grayson Napier, Mar-cus Jones, Bailey Ford, Jason Craig and Rob Ford (coaches). A twenty-strong group of special needs children enjoyed a success-ful evening out on the green at the Stoke Bowling Club, where they took on each other and Westpac employees in a number of games and activities. Thanks to a local partnership be-tween the Halberg Trust, Westpac and Sport Tasman and the Stoke Bowling Cup, special needs chil-dren from all over Nelson got a chance to learn the sport of lawn bowls. “It was absolutely fantastic. The kids seemed to have a great time and the Westpac volunteers loved the night as well,” says sen-ior advisor for Sport Tasman Dave Tippett.Westpac volunteers were each paired up with a child with special needs and provided catering at the conclusion of play.Dave says he “definitely” wants to give the kids another go at a dif-ferent sport. But first he will have to identify a sport willing to take them on board. He would also like to thank every-one who was involved in making the evening possible.

Hot-shots head to pistol champsLast weekend three members of the Cable Bay Pis-tol Club travelled to Dunedin for the South Island IPSC Pistol Champs. The two day event of 14 courses tests the shooter as they must draw from the holster and shoot on the move while some targets are moving. Cable Bay club president, Brian Bishop says the course provides all sorts of challenges. “Because the scor-ing is worked out with the time it takes, the hits on target, and there is also minor and major power which is how hard the projectiles hit, speed is very important so the faster the better while still getting good hits. This adds up to some very quick times which is good for the spectators.”Of the Nelson shooter Brian England, in his first away competition did well getting second place in the ungraded section and shooting a B grade score.Danny Hill had gun troubles and didn’t finish while Brian finished third place overall in the Open pistol section, a great effort.
