Nelson’s neighbourhood support co- ordinator has a bold goal for 2013 – and she’s not averse to bribery to help her get there. Kim MacDonald says she wants to see every street in Nelson have a neighbourhood support group and she will be replicating her successful bribe for local community constables by giving away a cake to those who help her sign up new groups. She says if she is successful it will be the first city in New Zealand to have a group on every street and will so- lidify Nelson’s reputation as a safe and friendly city. She is calling the promotion “race for the cake” and everyone that helps Kim set up a new group will get an entry in the quarterly draw for a cake, donated by Chocolate Velvet. If a new group is set up on a street that didn’t have a neighbourhood support group people will earn a double en- try and to help a street set up a group from Kim’s monthly “top ten list” you will earn triple entries. Last year 31 new groups were set up, bringing another 727 households into the support network, which aims to get neighbours keeping an eye on each other and the street. Currently there are more than 300 streets in Nelson that do not have a Neighbourhood Support group. January’s top ten list includes streets in e Glen, Nelson city, e Brook, Victory, Stoke and Tahuna. Kim says she has run the “race for the cake” competition amongst the com- munity constables as a bit of fun for the past three years. Last year the cake was won by Nelson constable Peter Crins aſter two years of Keith Jordon of Stoke taking home the cake. To sign up for neighbourhood sup- port, email Kim on nsupport@xtra. co.nz or call her on 546 4902. A group is very easy to set up and you don’t need to commit to running it once it’s set up. Great white butterfly caterpillars and eggs are found mostly in clus-ters on plants they favour, particu-larly nasturtium, honesty and bras-sica vegetables, including broccoli and cabbage. The caterpillars are speckled black and greyish-green with three yel-low lines along their bodies and the tiny, yellow eggs are in clusters of 30 to 100. Sightings of the pest butterfly’s caterpillars and eggs should be re-ported to the Ministry for Primary Industries hotline 0800 80 99 66.The multi-agency attempt to eradi-

cate the pest butterfly was launched at the end of last year. It is being carried out in partner-ship with Vegetables New Zealand, Ministry of Primary Industries, Tasman District Council and Nel-son City Council.

“I don’t find it bad, I get a free all day park before 8am be-cause Shelbourne St is empty when I arrive.”

Sandra Waine, Nelson.

“There’s not enough, I think everywhere should be all day. They’d still get the same amount of revenue and it’s a nuisance for workers.”

Mary Cameron, Nelson.

“Having lived in Wellington where they have different op-tions like parking buildings, I find Nelson frustrating.”

Robin Whalley, Nelson.

“I just park on the outskirts and walk in. It’s not far. People who complain about parking are pa-thetic.”

Exactly 12,383 parking tickets were dished out in the centre of Nelson last year and city workers were among those facing the fines.Nelson employees who commute to work on a daily basis say they are sick of battling to find a carpark in the CBD and are struggling to avoid accumulating parking tickets. Some workers say they are having to arrive over 30 minutes early for work to secure a free all day park while others admit to playing a cat-and-mouse game with city parking wardens to avoid a fine for staying over a time limit.Jaimie O’Carroll, a fulltime retail worker is frus-trated with the number of fines she has received while parked for work. She estimates she re-ceived over 20 fines last year, while retail worker Amy Macilwee says she has lost count of how many fines she has received. Jaimie says each day she feels like she is playing a game with the parking warden, moving her car up to two times to avoid a fine. She says there should be more all day parking or less of a time limit on parks available in the city. “I would rather pay for all day parking than pay $12 or $40 in fines every time I go to work. Where are workers supposed to park?”Monique Reid, of The Brook, says she now walks to work after struggling to find car parking she didn’t have to pay for.“It costs too much to park in town, and there is no where to park without a time limit.” She says her co-workers park up back streets or “wherever they can find a spot” and says she’s heard of people sneakily moving their cars or parking where they shouldn’t to avoid fines.

“It should be free. To park all day would cost about $8 and for a part timer that’s just too much out of their wages.”Nelson City Council mayor Aldo Miccio says daily commuters should not be receiving fines with parks available at the Trafalgar Centre, city fringe areas and alternative transport options available. But he says the current parking strat-egy will be relooked at this year by the council. “We do have an array of alternate transport op-tions for employees such as the cycleway and NBus has been up and running for a year. These options were introduced as part of a six year plan and we will be looking at how they are working.” He says there has also been discussion of the potential for a parking building and increasing long term parking in the city centre.Over the winter months Aldo says he would like to see the Tuesday free parking intiative continue and hopes to open that up to include more days.

Nelson boaties have been out in force since the Christmas break with the marina manager reporting as many as 90 boats using the ramp in one day alone.Bill Mannix says when the weather was nice over the New Year period they would see 80-90 boat trailers in the area, up from an average of 15-20 on a nice work day.“Weekend’s in particular are obviously very popular and if the weather is nice it gets quite high but 80 to 90 a day is getting right up

there,” he says.He says the behaviour from those waiting to launch their boats has been “generally very good” as most boat owners are pretty quick at getting it in the water. “But we do have the odd one or two that get impatient and think if they don’t get their boat in the water straight away the fish will all be caught.”Bill says Nelson Marina is also at near capacity, with it at 98 per cent berthed in the marina a week after New Year.

Four years ago the Nelson Surf Life Saving Club had fewer than ten members, but now with a 100 strong membership Tim Ward, 16, of Tahu-na is in his third year of keeping a watchful eye over Tahunanui Beach. As a lifeguard with the club Tim spends his Sundays patrolling Nelson’s most popular beach, keeping an eye on swim-mers, kayakers and kite surfers as they make the most of the safe swimming beach.Tim trained through the NSLC Nipper course, a programme designed to educate children on beach safety and awareness and says he enjoys being a part of the team keeping locals safe on and in the water.“It’s great to know I am able to help out if some-one is in need of assistance and it’s a lot of fun.”While rescues don’t happen every week, Tim says the patrol often helps out wayward kite surfers who have been dragged out to sea and

says the biggest danger is people not seeing the smaller risks around them. “Not everybody understands that the rips around Blind Chan-nel are really strong, and you could easily get into trouble, while a lot of the area on the main beach can get quite shallow. We had to help a man with neck injuries who had dived head first into a sand bar because he didn’t see how shal-low it is.”With a new tower at their disposal this summer, the Nelson Surf Life Saving Club sports officer Ed Steenbergen says the lifeguards now have a birds eye view of the beach and says the new year has been busy but with no major incidents. He says that while the lifeguards mostly watch the swimming area between the flags, they keep an eye on the rest of the beach too. The Nelson surf life savers patrol Tahuna Beach on Sundays during peak summer periods.

Customer fury at KFCNew staff sought after complaints

A barrage of complaints from disappointed KFC diners has finally forced the fast food chain’s head office to take ac-tion, installing a new area manager and recruiting new staff at the Tahunanui restau-rant.KFC Nelson logged more than 120 negative comments on the national KFC Face-book page and Nelson Weekly has received close to a dozen requests over the past two months from readers, urging the paper to do a story about the state of the restaurant.Complaints were posted on the Facebook page, describing how slow the service was, that staff didn’t care and chicken was served either uncooked or cold.A KFC national spokesperson said via a statement to Nelson Weekly that they were aware of the complaints and were working to rectify the situa-tion. “KFC is aware of issues at its Nelson store affecting ser-vice levels. We are currently working to address these is-sues including the recruitment of new staff.”The statement went on to say that a new area manager will

work closely with staff in-store and they are confident that service levels will be “back on track” once they have “filled staffing requirements for the store”. A new store manager was employed six months ago. Many of those commenting say they prefer to drive to the Motueka store for their KFC fix. “The queues are so long and soooo sloooow we just don’t bother going to KFC Tahuna. Never see staff wip-ing tables! Had hoped when the new building was opened things would improve but nope,” wrote Pauline Bishell.Brent Marshall wrote: “The place is disgraceful… several times now we’ve spent more than 20 minutes in the drive

thru often to find they are try-ing to operate out of one win-dow. New Year’s Eve was the best though… a hand scrib-bled sign on the door said ‘closed cos it’s New Year’s’, and this was at 8.30 in the evening. Crap management and bone idle lazy, rude staff. Mot[ueka] blows them away with good kiwi locals serving.”KFC says it encourages cus-tomer feedback to its area manager to help the store “in achieving the expected levels of customer satisfaction”.“We would like to thank our Nelson customers for their concern regarding the current situation, and look forward to repaying their support and en-couragement.”

Spending in Nelson last month was up on last year to $97.2 million, a rise of 2.1 per cent.Figures released last week by Paymark, which processes about 75 per cent of all electronic transactions in New Zealand, show that December 2012 spending was up for the third month in a row but wasn’t the huge spend retailers were hoping for. The seasonally adjusted total spend through the Paymark network increased 0.5 per cent from November to December 2012, the third consecutive monthly gain.Yet, despite the positive spending in the week leading up to Christmas, the December month in total increased a below average total year-on-year. Paymark head of sales and marketing, Paul Whiston, says when the figures are adjusted for seasonal fluctuations however, the growth rate sits at a more positive 4.3 per cent and shows an “encouraging finish to 2012”.

Around 30 Nelsonians have signed up and team leader Rob Silcock says he now needs just a few more to fill his group to help build houses in Cambodia this April. No building or practical experience is necessary and Rob says the build is a chance to make a real difference, learn about the Cambodian culture and have the experience of a life time.“There’s no upper age limit and you are needed. For every seven people we send we can build another house and they are desperately needed so you are desperately needed,” says Rob.If you are thinking about giving it a go but aren’t too sure about a few things Rob says you can give him a call and talk it over as he’s been there on a Habitat for Humanity build many times before. Looking across the counter of a paint shop in Nelson, Robert Morrison noticed a photo of an old rusty, run down Appleby home. The house didn’t have any significance to him, other than the fact he owns it. Ever since that day, the Namibia-based commodity trader has come across many similar photos of the building on the Appleby Straight, some that are even for sale at the Saturday market. It’s a favourite location for many local wedding photographers and some would say it is now the most photographed in the region. “The first time it was on a calendar on old derelict houses in the South Island,” Robert says. “The next time some lady had taken a photo of it and painted onto canvas. I thought ‘where did you get that from?’”Robert says his one issue with the amount of photography exposure has been the lack of communication from people wishing to come onto the property. “I don’t mind though, as long as they ask. I was talking to my accountant the other day and he mentioned every time he drives past there are people out getting photographed.”Robert bought the 50 acre block from the late David Harford in 2001 for agriculture and horticulture use. The house, believed to have been built in either the late 1800s or early 1900s, still has no significance to him and will only remain long term if it has some sort of financial viability. The reason the house is there? It was part of the package. The property is currently being leased out to Snap Fresh Foods, who do all their salad processing in Stoke, and it was previously leased out to the O’Connor family. Robert was unsure of the history of the house, but found some plans from the Canterbury Agriculture Society that wished to turn it into a wool shed in the 1960s. Bryan Ford, a nearby resident says he used to walk past the house on his way to Appleby School in the 1940s. He knew some details but was unsure of the actual date the house was built. “It was owned by Arthur Harford and they built another house and moved out. David Harford, their son, farmed the land right through and obviously used it as a wool shed.”

At the moment Robert has no issue with leaving the building intact, but one day, unless it has some commercial viability, it will be pulled down. “To me it’s not worth retaining but lot of people get satisfaction and pleasure out of taking photos here.”Bryan says the building became a popular location for photographers in the past 15 years and labelled it as unique. “It’s not exactly a historic trust’s sort of building though. I imagine no one will spend money on it and while it would’ve been built with good rimu timber, time will probably take its toll. It’s sad to see buildings go and while it would be sad to see it go, I’m not overly sentimental about it.”

riding for the national title, making an exciting spectacle for the crowds this weekend.Richmond Rodeo secretary Tina Angus-Phyn says the rodeo will be a fantastic day out for lo-cal families and holidaymakers alike. “Each year the event gets bet-ter and better. It’s always an action packed day and our local rodeo club members and vis-iting riders will be making the most of it.”Along with over 150 entries, last year’s rodeo cham-pions will be back and the top bull riders in the coun-try will be showing what they’re made of, with the best of the best making the trip up from around the South Island and a crowd of well known rid-ers heading down from the North. The Richmond Rodeo Club have pulled out all the stops this year with some great events lined up includ-ing Bareback, Calf Roping, Steer Wres-tling, Bull Riding, Team Roping, Steer and Calf Riding. The professional bucking broncos from Waimate will join local and Canterbury stock,

providing a fantastic range of entertainment for the audience and the Barrel racing is a great op-portunity for local pony clubs and adult riders to join in the fun of the rodeo. The 8 Second Bulls from Rangiora don’t get their

name from sitting around, they’ve earned the nick-name from unseat-ing anyone who dares ride them, so watch as the brav-est riders take on these magnificent animals. They say the best is saved till last and this event is not to be missed so make sure you stick around to watch the excitement un-fold as this will take place at the end of the day.The rodeo is a day out for everyone and this year there will be lots on for the kids. A range of sideshow entertain-ment will be on of-fer from a bouncy castle to a merry go round, the lit-tle ones can hitch a ride on a Clydes-dale horse, watch them parade in the

arena or sign up for the kids sheep and calf rides, a great way for the whole family to get involved on rodeo day.Watching the rodeo is hungry work so take advan-tage of the great hot and cold drink on offer from a variety of local stalls. From hot chips, burgers to sandwiches and a licensed bar on site, spectators can make the most of a day out in the sun.

To help you get started, FarmSafe offer a range of skill training options that contribute to the completion of the National Certificate in Agriculture (General Skills). They range from general health and safety, riding motorbike and quads, driving 4WD’s and tractors, and us-

ing chainsaws. The courses are practically based and can be really affordable if you follow certain options. Chris Clark, regional tutor for FarmSafe has recently received Ag Excel endorsement, and industry endorsement which reflects the quality of his training and assessing in a range of these skills. West Coasters keen on working in the music industry will now have the opportunity to kick off their careers on the Coast with Tai Pou-tini Polytechnic (TPP) launching a foundation music programme. The 34-week Certificate in Foun-dation Sound and Music will start at the Greymouth campus in Feb-ruary 2013 and programme tu-tor Dean Hetherington says it will give students a great grounding in the basics of performance music, audio engineering and live sound.

Programme leader Phil Oxenham says the students will gain experi-ence in entry level recording and song writing and will perform mu-sic from different contemporary styles at polytechnic and public venues throughout the year. “The programme will give them the first taste of what’s involved in the contemporary entertainment in-dustry. ” says Mr Oxenham. The Foundation programme is a useful introduction to higher study in live sound, audio engineering or music performance at TPP’s MAINZ cam-puses in Christchurch or Auckland. Happy New Year to you all and welcome to 2013! We have all done very well, for if you are read-ing this you have survived the “end of the world as we know it” and managed to struggle, albeit slightly wearily, into the “new age” and all the new adventures and excitement that it brings. Our first adventure was the breakdown of the dishwasher! Not a good idea when you have a houseful but we took a deep breath, opened a good wine and soldiered on – a new one is on the horizon and will appear before the next influx all being well. ACC is off the hook as no one has yet tripped over the extra power cord or any of the many Christmas toys!I hope Father Christmas was good to you – he was very good to me and we had a wonderful time with family and friends. Very quiet around here now they have left – I was just getting into mashed banana and farex for breakfast at around 6.30am – toast and tea just doesn’t have the same appeal!!! Benjamin took his first steps while here, mainly thanks to the best present in the world – a push along horse – thanks Jim – it worked a treat.Nonno (grandad for Johnno) also had a good time as he installed his new outdoor kitchen – note I said HIS kitchen. Complete with four gas burners, hood, teppanyaki hotplate, side burners and the proverbial kitchen sink! Here’s me think-ing that a five burner, 1 metre oven was enough – silly woman….. apparently, the common old “inside kitchen" is so yesterday. I will also add that he has a Weber kettle cooker (he is Australian) and a smoker and lord knows what else hidden under cover on the back deck, but Nonno does enjoy the odd snack and can now even clean up, which is great!!! In the brochure there was a woman standing with a glass of something cold looking just lovely while the man wielded the pans and peered into the lid etc. Looked like a good idea to me… We have had a lot of fun learning how to use this wondrous appliance and it does mean that we will now have the lighting fixed so Nonno can cook outside all year round instead of the cur-rent system which involves layers of clothing, a torch and a plate of steak or chops cooking away while he warms himself between forays in front of the fire! Now he will be able to stand outside all year round as I am sure there is a knob somewhere that he can use to keep warm.Needless to say, the poor old garden has been a bit neglected with all the excitement of pad-dling pool, balance bike, jolly jumper etc defi-nitely taking precedence but the pots did get watered, with a bit of help, and the deadheading was done (yesterday). I do need to get out and trim back the scabio-sa and the hellebores, and it is a good idea to take out the lower leaves of hostas as the snails

love these and then move on around the garden. Keep checking ties on the tomatoes etc, in these winds dahlias and delphiniums can snap really easily also, so stakes are a good idea.

• In the vege garden use small bamboo stakes to help keep beans upright – they tend to break off in the winds if they don’t have a bit of support.• Keep planting marigolds to assist in keeping nematodes away from the roots of your plants.• Apply liquid fertiliser from time to time (sea-weed based is good or a liquid blood and bone) to assist growth, and a spray with Seasol will help strengthen seedlings and assist them to take up the food.• Keep planting beans – mine are cropping well and another lot are on the way.• Water tomatoes from the base if possible, deep watering is best about 3 times a week.• Keep sowing snow peas for a regular supply, also carrots, leeks and bok choy. Keep this in a cooler part of the garden so it does not bolt.• Mulch, Mulch, Mulch…..use lawn clippings, compost etc to help prevent moisture loss around the vege patch.

If you are like me you are still in holiday mode so do enjoy this good weather while you can – the garden will always be there and there is the whole of tomorrow not touched yet…..!

Have a good break,

TipsThis weeks

A fishing contest hosted by the Motue-ka RSA will be held all over the Top of the South this weekend, giving fisher-men and women a chance to head out into their favourite spots.Pat Hall, the organiser of the Mc-Cashin’s Brewery-sponsored event, says there is no set area to fish in. “You could technically head to Vanuatu for the weekend as long as you’re back here for the weigh in between 1pm and 3pm on Sunday,” he says. Pat says while the event was competi-tive, it was mainly targeted at families. “We have quite a strong children’s sec-tion and it’s run in conjunction with the take a kid fishing programme we run once a year. We just want to encourage families to get out there and have a fun day. If you want to get serious you can.”There will be a number of prizes in a

variety of sections included heaviest fish, average weight fish, heaviest snap-per over 10 kg (which has yet to be claimed), average weight snapper and many others.A snapper was caught two years ago

weighing 85 grams shy of the magic 10 kg mark. Pat says there has been 30 kg groper recorded and it is common to see some “extremely large” kingfish caught during the weekend. “We’ve got quite a unique area here because you can catch so many different species in what I call the d’Urville Circle between Tasman Bay and Golden Bay. You can catch snapper, groper, blue cod, you name it, it’s there.”The competition officially begins at 5pm on Friday and there are no restric-tions as to how long you can fish for, as long as you are at the Motueka RSA car park on Sunday by 1pm. Entry fee is $25 per adult and $5 per child. You can register at Totally Boat-ing, Stirling Sports, McCashin’s Brew-ery and Hunting and Fishing by Friday night.

The Nelson Falcons have introduced themselves in the second best way possible by drawing 2-2 with last year's champions Canterbury United, in their first official match. The ASB Youth League newcomers left it late, with Blenheim striker Omar Guardiola scoring a screamer with just five minutes to go on the scoreboard before substitute Harry Tod-Smith equalised in stoppage time, cancelling out Canterbury's two previous strikes, in front of a bumper crowd at Trafalgar Park.New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Falcons coach Davor Tavich, who rang three changes at half time, says the side can take plenty of confidence out of the performance, in particular dur-ing the final stages of the match. "The main message [at halftime] was to pick up the intensity and match Canter-bury, who are a physically strong side and are technically very good," he says. "I'm definitely sure that the boys are going to take a lot from this game. The nerves are probably gone now. I think we are going to get a few more results."

Davor acknowledged the side did miss some key chances with Omar hitting the post just minutes after Canter-bury's opening goal while Tore Wae-chter missed a second half penalty. "It's football though, you know? Those things happen and you just have to play on. It's not the end until the final whistle blows." But two of the side's best chances actually came from goal keeper Coey Turipa who tested his op-posite from a spot kick just beyond the halfway line. He then got a header on target after leaving his box in the dying stages to join a corner. Davor credited the difference Nayland College captain Sam Maxwell made in the middle of the park when he came on while also praising the defensive ef-forts of Mark Johnston and US-based Erik Panzer and the busy Omar. Erik was only available for one match before returning for his second year at Quinnipiac University so will miss this Sunday's clash against YoungHeart Manawatu which kicks off at 2pm at Trafalgar Park. Davor says there are likely to be few changes to the match-day squad. "For us we just need to work a lot harder and speed it up."

At six o'clock on Saturday night, Dale McKenzie was driving for survival. The 19 year old had only managed seventh place in his New Zealand Home Loans NZ Superstock Championship heat and had to rely on a repercharge just to qualify through to the last stage. An hour later, he was being interviewed by Dave Birdling in the centre of the track as one of two drivers that were added to the 24 already qualified finalists – the proudest moment of his young ca-reer. But by 10pm, Dale had a new highlight and some silverware to show for it. The 85n driver was the new 2NZ, being pipped by just one point as Palmerston North's Shane Penn and 23 year old club-mate Thomas Stanaway made up the rest of the podium spots. Reflecting on the night of his life, Dale Junior's emotions had come full circle in just 24 hours. "I knew the car was going fast enough, that it was on the home track and if there was enough Nel-son boys in the final then winning was definitely possible. But I was hoping to have a clean run in the qualifying and get straight through and it definitely didn't work out that way," he says. "It feels pretty good now but I'd say once it sinks in that I'm 2NZ it will be even better."All eyes were on three-time winner Craig Boote as the superstocks spilled out onto the track for the third and final heat of the championship. The 7n driver was sitting pretty in third place and was handed fifth on the grid, giving fans hope he could become the most decorated driver the class has ever seen. But in a matter of laps 'The Boss' was gone. Targeted by two Palmy tanks, Craig was battered, bruised and thrown into the wall at every turn. He ended the night in 11th posi-tion, much lower than he deserved after showing vintage Boote form all weekend. Nick Fowler, the South Island champion driving Craig's old car, was leading the points tally going into the final race but also couldn't survive the wreckage. He finished tenth. Shane Harwood did survive but a poor first race, which saw him collect just three points before his second race win, denied him the chance to challenge for a podium spot. He finished a very credible eighth. Brett Nicholls was said to be a dark horse at this event but the

end of the night he would be better known as 'Mr Consistent' collecting 17, 15 and 19 points to finish sixth place overall. So it was left up to the two young guns to do the business as Dale and Thomas avoided trouble to finish second and sixth in the final heat, giving them their first ever podium finishes at a national championship. In some of the other local results, Blair Cunning-ham finished 19th, Jared Gray finished 21st and Ian Clayworth was 25th.Dale knew he would be a target in the final but didn't let it get to him before the race. There were times he had to weave and push his way past other superstocks but he admits he was barely touched. "It's not scary but you don't know who is going to do what. You have to watch out."He felt for Craig and Nick, who came so close to victory. "Everyone works so hard for it. You go into that final heat and it only takes one person to stuff your whole night up. I'm definitely gutted for those guys but at the same time I got on the podium because of that."Nelson Speedway president Kris Carpenter says it was "an awesome" result for the club to have two of the top three in the country. She also says it was not surprising that some of the early fa-vourites were targeted in the final race as it oc-curs at every national championship. "It's not over until the last race. It was basically teams rac-ing out there. I'm gutted for some of the guys but also rapt for the young boys, that was one of the best results we could have got." All of the Nelson drivers will head to Christch-urch this weekend for the New Zealand Super-stock Grand Prix. For some it will be a chance at redemption, for others it could be chance to prove why they are now the country's best.

Well time for the first update of the New Year. I hope everyone made the most of the good weather before the wind turned up. The visibility of water along the Boulder Bank had been unreal with 12 metres of clear water not uncommon.Good numbers of smaller snapper are almost everywhere in the bay now with good numbers getting caught off Rabbit Island and along the Boulder Bank. The small king-fish are still in massive numbers and it’s good to hear a few club members took our advice and shot out for a troll and nailed a few, well done. Some bigger kingfish have been caught there as well last week so make sure your gear is up for a 20kg in case it smashes your line. The spearo’s have been having great success out along the Boulder Bank with the Glen end producing easy pickings for kingfish.Once sea cleans up again the snap-per will be in close at Rabbit Island and Back Beach. Get out at daylight for best results. It is always good to know about land based fishing options if the weather is a little windy for the boat. An-other good spot is Kina Beach with many a night fishing there for snap-per. Find the cockle beds during the day then fish on them at night. French Pass has still not really fired up with the odd kingie showing up but the big numbers of larger snap-per have not turned up yet, hope-fully in the next few weeks this will change.Tasman Bay is still running at about 18 degrees out wide with no reports of tuna yet. From the look of the surface temp charts I think it will be another few weeks yet before they turn up. We will let you know when they are here as the season is short

so you need to get out and hit them while you can. Stephens as normal for this time of the year is almost dead unless you want a blue cod. Remember the slot fishery is in force now so only fish between 30cm and 35cm.Some good news on the snapper front in the Marlborough Sounds. Finally some reports of good sized fish getting taken in Kenepuru sound. Remember best to fish in the late evening and early morning before all the loopies get up and stir the water up and scare the fish away. The weather update for this week-end is looking excellent so you have no excuses, go check the gear now and load the boat, it’s going to be a stunner. Also don’t forget the Motueka RSA competition coming up on the 18-20 Jan. And last but not least for the kids out there. Have you ever thought of joining the Sea Cadets? It’s an awe-some way to get sea experience and meet new people, I would highly recommend it.
