CHRISTMAS PRODUCTION

Congratulations to the children for a wonderful production of The Inn-Spectors. Mrs Moroni, as the Director of the show, produced a unique event which was well attended on both days. I would like to say thank you to all the parents and carers for providing such wonderful costumes and to all the staff who have worked tirelessly to ensure that all the children were able to be included in this show which had 51 speaking parts. We raised approximately £240 which will be used towards our stunning new backdrop from refreshment donations and the sale of our Christmas Craft items.

CELEBRATING ACHIEVEMENT IN KS2

The release of the formal results by the DfES for the KS2 test on 14th December 2018, demonstrate the diligence and hard work of the entire community at Upton-upon-Severn. We have a vibrant, happy and positive school and I am proud to be the Headteacher of such an inspirational team. Well done to everybody, particularly the children.

SINGING AT GRAFTONS CARE HOME As part of our half terms value ‘Community’ Year 4 visited the Graftons to spread some Christmas cheer. The class sang songs from our Christingle service to the senior residents who attend the Graftons, who all thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Year 4 would like to thank the Graftons for the chocolates they were given and also the parents that came along to help us with the long walk to and from the Graftons.

YEAR 4 - BISHOPS WOOD On Monday, Years 3 and 4 went to Bishops Wood to spend the day being Vikings. Upon our arrival we split into the two classes. Year 4’s guide, Ulna, was impressed with the knowledge the children had of Vikings and their understanding of this period of time. We walked to the thinking tree and made the decision to travel from our own land, to a new land. This was done in the Viking long boat. We rowed for two days and two nights. Utterly exhausted, we found our new land and explored. Ulna soon had us set to work. Some people were creating jewellery and brooches using copper, others were in charge of spinning the wool and the final group had the responsibility of making the rune pots. Each chore was great fun. After a quick refuelling, we headed back outside to create a new shelter. Using a tripod style model, the class worked hard to build their shelter and then cover it in a protective layer of leaves. This was an amazing trip to bring our learning to a fabulous end and we would like to thank the parents/carers who accompanied us.

STEM WORKSHOP On Thursday Year 4 took part in an engineering competition run by STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). The children were excited to receive a box of K'nex and their task was to make a new railway station. They had a specification to follow, which included making it accessible for all. The children showed amazing teamwork and ideas.

Josie and Maja won the class competition as they created a lift using a pulley mechanism. If their design is chosen to go

further they will be invited to a final against other schools in Worcestershire.

CHRISTINGLE SERVICE

Our Christingle Service will take place on Friday 21st December at 1.30pm in the Upton Parish Church. At the end of the service the children will walk back to school and be dismissed at the normal time. We would like all children in Years 1 to 6 to bring a large orange in to school during next week to make their Christingle. Reception children do not need to bring in an orange as we have something special for them to use in place of a traditional Christingle.

The Christmas Card and tea towel orders should all be with you now. If anybody has received their cheque back from their Christmas Card and Tea Towel order to alter the amount please could this be returned to school as soon as possible.

CHRISTINGLE SERVICE The Friends will be serving hot drinks and mince pies in the church before the Christingle Service on Friday 21st December. Any donations of mince pies on this day would be gratefully.

CHRISTMAS JUMPER DAY

As Monday 17th December is our Christmas lunch day, children can come to school wearing a Christmas jumper, instead of their

school jumper/cardigan. Rest of uniform is to be as normal.

HOMEWORK AND CLUBS

Next week there will be no homework set, however we would still encourage you to read to your child regularly. There will also be no after school activity clubs. We hope your child has enjoyed the clubs we had on offer this term.

WASSAIL !

Mrs Moroni was very proud of the choir on Saturday evening when they performed in church alongside Hanley Voices. Many people congratulated the choir after the concert for their singing. This was a great opportunity for our children to experience rehearsing for a special event and they were great!
