Page 5: 14jan

THE OLD FAT MAN SITTING ON THE PARK BENCH ANSWERS AN ANGRY CAMPER: “YOU LIED ABOUT SAFEWAY!” Many times in dealing with our previously incarcerated job seekers, we have found that they tend to blame the “F” word for all their difficulties in finding re-entry employment. It is an easy associate but, NOT always true. While blaming that foul, evil letter “F” that you tattoo on your forehead every new day of your job searching seems the correct thing to do but, you give it too much credit.

Why did you NOT get hired at (say) Safeway had less to do with your background unless your past is directly linked or associated with the job you are applying for or you are totally exhibiting no remorse:

• “YEA! I would steal that 55 inch TV again…Hell, I didn’t really steal it but it was Super bowl Sunday…I would have brought it back on Monday…REALLY! Would I do it again…well…not till Super Bowl Sunday…” • “Yea, I shot him but, he deserved it! He had not right to talk to me in that tone!”

Understand that we used extreme examples but, they are true examples that applicants told their potential, new bosses at the interview. Hopefully you get the serious point of that their offensive is not the real issue but their attitude and that creates fear that the applicant has not learned anything in the process and would be more inclined to repeat the behavior as they see nothing wrong with what they originally did. If you were the hiring employer, would you want that on your watch? Would you be willing to take a risk? You know that answer! More importantly, if you did not get hired at Safeway, might have more to do with your availability. Please remember that the job description (you did read it, didn’t ya?) told you that candidates with open availability will always be on the “A” list when they select interviewees because most stores run extended hours and as the new guy, they are hiring you to work the shifts that their older, more seasoned employees don’t want to work. That’s reality! That you couldn’t work evenings, weekends or holidays has more to do with you

Page 6: 14jan

not getting hired that the old “F” word. That you are living in Central Phoenix and the location you applied for is in Anthem might be a good reason you didn’t get selected unless they knew you were looking to move out to Anthem (and that you communicated that to that local manager before or right after you completed the application…they do not have ESP or ESPN if they don’t have cable). The application and how you filled it out would be the primary reason why you were not selected. No slight on you because 8 out of 10 applications get tossed because they were done incorrectly. If you didn’t use our Rule # 4 formula then, you did the application incorrectly. Not bragging because it is true. If you didn’t know to get the full job description, didn’t know how to break it down to the skills and abilities that the employer was looking (screening) for…if you didn’t know how to take that and create a narrative that incorporates successfully all of the key words and phrase then you missed it by a mile – unless old lady luck was shining on you or riding shotgun with you that day. If she wasn’t and you didn’t get called…then, I would say that is why they didn’t call you because you never showed the employer that you have the specific skills and abilities that they spelled out in the job description. Please remember that just because it requires no experience does not mean that the job did not require certain skills or abilities – and sometimes a lot of them. Because you were not schooled on Rule # 4, I will cut you some slack. But, that is a method of correctly filling out an application and you should become schooled in it if you want to be successful in this new age of job searching. So...not knowing the step-by-step process you took…I would still content that there were other factors rather than (our old whipping boy) the “F” word, as to why Safeway didn’t call ya…SORRY DUDE! =================================================================

U.S. Veterans Aid & Attendance Pension Did you know that there are special tax free cash benefits available from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (the "VA") to help war period Veterans and their Widows pay for home healthcare

and medical expenses? This benefit is called the VA Aid and Attendance Pension ("A&A") and qualified Veterans or their Widows can receive monthly cash benefits up to the following amounts:

TO QUALIFY THE WAR PERIOD VETERAN MUST HAVE:

Served 90 consecutive days on active military duty;

Received a better than dishonorable discharge; and

Served at least 1 day of active duty during a war period (there is no requirement that any service be performed in a combat zone).

THE WIDOW MUST:

Not have remarried after the Veteran's death. THE VETERAN (OR WIDOW):

Must be certified by a doctor as needing assistance with his or her daily living activities.

THE HOUSEHOLD: Must have significantly less than $80,000 in Allowable Countable Assets (subject to the discretion of the VA); and The Adjusted Household Income (Gross Household Income less all unreimbursed recurring medical expenses) must be less than the A&A benefit. VETERANS AND WIDOWS (referred to as "Claimants") can become Qualified for the A&A Benefit with Proper Asset and Income Planning: Most A&A Claimants have difficulty qualifying for the A&A benefit due to their inability to meet the

Page 12: 14jan

income and asset limitations. Elder law attorneys, however, can help claimants become A&A qualified through proper A&A benefit planning. The goal of A&A benefit planning is to help Claimants qualify for A&A, which in turn helps them pay for their medical expenses and postpones the depletion of their assets. Other goals are to preserve and protect the Claimants' assets and eliminate or postpone any need to rely upon Medicaid for care. Presently, unlike Medicaid, the VA does not have any rules that restrict the gifting away of assets to reduce the net worth of the Claimant before qualifying for the A&A benefit. However, serious tax issues and Medicaid's rules and restrictions should be considered in any plan to qualify for the A&A benefit. Therefore, we recommend that any Veterans, or their Widows, who meet the service requirements should contact an elder attorney to learn if they can qualify for the A&A benefit. About Beatitudes Campus - Choose the best retirement living in Central Phoenix... When Beatitudes Campus was founded in 1965, it was conceived to be a place where older adults could live, learn and grow through all the days of their lives. Our Founders dreamed of a "campus," borrowing the term from the educational community because of its sense of continual growth and vibrancy. Our Campus was one of the first to introduce the concept of continuing care and improve the quality of retirement living in North Central Phoenix. Many years have passed since we opened and we are proud to say that while times have changed, our Campus is still the leader in quality, affordable retirement living. Today, we continue to be a center of excellence in the field of aging services as we focus on the concept of living rather than aging. In fact, we remain at the forefront of exceptional retirement living by keeping our eye on the future. Through our redevelopment and expansion, we have added 199 new residences and the state-of-the-art Town Plaza – the heart of the community – featuring modern amenities, dining venues and health and wellness services. Our community is founded by Church of the Beatitudes, a United Church of Christ congregation. Church of the Beatitudes also founded the following related not-for-profit organizations: Beatitudes Agelink, an intergenerational child development center located on the site of our Campus; and Duet: Partners in Health & Aging, serving homebound adults, caregivers, faith communities, and grandparents raising grandchildren.

Knowing an employee on the inside assisted to move things along a lot more smoothly. It was very stress-free interview with different team members in associated departments. The hiring process was simple minus the drug test, requirement for TB clearance, reference checks, resume submission and the Campus's large size. Employees are very friendly as well as residents. TONIA STARTED AS CREW IN 2008 RESTAURANTS SHE NOW OVERSEES: 1

Q: Why did you make the decision to work at Chipotle? A: I had my own business running a daycare but I decided to relocate to Arizona because I wanted change in my life. It was difficult to find work because people did not want to give me a chance. I walked in to Chipotle expecting them to say no like everyone else but instead the General Manager said you have something that we are looking for. Q: How long did it take you to be promoted? A: I remember when I was approached about becoming a Kitchen Manager. I was surprised that someone who had no experience could become a Manager. I thought it was a joke. Once I became a Kitchen Manager it took me about 18 months to become a General Manager and now I am on the path to become a Restaurateur. Q: What advice do you have for someone interested in Chipotle? A: I would tell them that they could not have picked a better company to want to work for. That they are in for an opportunity that could change the way they think about a fast food restaurant and the quality of food that they are serving. Q: What is your favorite menu item? A: My favorite is the veggie bowl with brown rice, pinto beans, corn salsa, green tomatillo salsa, red tomatillo salsa, cheese and guacamole. Q: How has Chipotle impacted your life? A: Chipotle has taught me so much but I think the biggest thing that I have learned is that I can do anything. Chipotle has trained me to not compromise my standards at work or in my personal life. Hard work and determination does not go unnoticed and that this is truly a company that is about changing people lives.
