DEAR%FRIENDS%AND%FAMILIES%OF%ST.%MICHAEL%PARISH%SCHOOL,% Welcome to the 2015 St. Michael Parish School S.M.A.R.T. Family Night! Thank you for joining with us this evening to celebrate our community of families and our tradition of Catholic education. Beginning in 1881, our school has served families in Olympia and Thurston County by providing excellent, Catholic faith-based education to their children. Our school’s proud past is built upon a shared commitment to the spiritual, intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and aesthetic growth for all of our students. Our entire faculty and staff are committed to partnering with our families to ensure that we are continually living this mission. As we look ahead, your dedicated stewardship through the sharing of your time, talent, and treasure ensures a bright future for our school. Over the past 27 years, your support of the S.M.A.R.T. auction has enabled the sustained growth of St. Michael Parish School. Each year, half of our auction proceeds fund our Capital Improvements Fund and the other half builds our Endowment Fund. Through your kind generosity, our auction has funded such exciting projects as our playground, smart boards, public address system, security doors, covered play area, and the new drainage system for our playfield. Additionally, generations of students have been able to attend our school through tuition assistance generated by the auction. I want you to know that your participation tonight significantly impacts the lives of our students, directly enhancing their school experiences and allowing us to provide the best Catholic education possible. Whether you are new to the auction or have been with us for many years, please know that your support is deeply honored and recognized. I would like to thank our S.M.A.R.T. auction chair, Aurea Estrella-Geraghty, and our co-chair, Karen Samaras. Their dedication and sense of vision has led us to this exciting evening of stewardship and community building. I am grateful for the support of our teachers, our S.M.A.R.T. committee, our PTSA room reps, and all of our donors. Please join me in warmly thanking them for their service to the school. I am also appreciative of Fr. Jim’s wise counsel and spiritual leadership in support of the auction. Lastly, please join me in thanking all of our school and parish families. The success of our S.M.A.R.T. auction is through our combined efforts as one parish family. Thank you for your support and “step right up”! Blessings, Connor Geraghty Principal St. Michael Parish School %

SAINT&MICHAEL&A&REMARKABLE&TRADITION&In August of 1881, Sister Benedict Joseph Superior, Sister Mary Gabriel, and Sister Providence of the Sacred Heart, transformed a small building in Olympia into a makeshift Catholic school and convent. The building, called Providence St. Amable, opened its doors on September 18, with 35 girls enrolled.

Within a few years the sisters had raised enough money to purchase land on which to build a permanent school. Mother Joseph of the Sacred Heart planned and supervised construction of the new Providence St. Amable Academy, a two-story building to be located in downtown Olympia on what is now Capitol Way.

The Academy opened on February 13, 1884. There were few amenities and no luxuries, but the building had larger classrooms and for the first time, space for a chapel. In 1889, a fourth sister joined the faculty and boys were admitted for the first time. The high school program continued to admit only girls, provided full academic preparation for careers in teaching and business.

The sisters, who wanted the poor to be able to attend their school, kept tuition as low as possible-$1 per month for primary grades and $2 per month for high school. In 1906, when Providence St. Amable Academy celebrated its 25th anniversary, the school had 103 pupils, 25 boarders, and a faculty of 7 sisters. Over time, the school became known simply as Providence Academy. During the 1912-13 school year the sisters were joined by the school’s first lay teachers. In 1914 the Academy built a new annex containing an auditorium, library, science laboratory and separate dormitory for the sisters. In 1918 another classroom was built using wood from the old Catholic church.

Never a prosperous establishment, the school fell into debt until 1926 when St. Michael Parish purchased it for $11,000. Parish administration discontinued the high school and student boarding, and the Providence Academy officially became St. Michael School.

The building, which had deteriorated during the Depression, was damaged by a fire in 1939. Planning for a new school began in January of 1949 with construction costs estimated at $300,000. Four months later, an earthquake brought down the facades of many downtown buildings. While the school survived the quake, inspections later revealed considerable structural damage and the 2nd and 3rd floors were condemned. Construction of the new school was delayed as parishioners worked to make needed repairs.

In March of 1950, Father Michael O’Dwyer, representing Archbishop Connolly, broke ground for the new St. Michael School and Convent at our current location on 10th Street. Classes in the original building on Capitol Way ended in June of 1951. That summer, supplies were transferred, desks were refinished and the sisters moved into their new convent. The new St. Michael School

opened just in time to accommodate the children of the post-war “baby boom” with 343 students enrolled for Fall.

The 1960’s brought significant changes to the school. With fewer sisters available to join the faculty, the first lay principal was hired in 1968. Sisters continued teaching at the school until the early 1970’s.

St. Michael School has built a legacy of Catholic education that is rich in tradition and dedicated to Catholic principles. We are grateful to all who have supported our school since its humble beginnings. Many thanks to our dedicated staff, parents, friends and alumni for helping us move confidently into the future.

SMART&FAMILY&NIGHT&AUCTION&FUND5A5NEED

I am thrilled to announce our Fund-a-need for this year’s S.M.A.R.T. Family Night Auction. As you may have noticed, our gym becomes incredibly hot and uncomfortable during our large events and gatherings. Our school is in serious need of a large exhaust fan for our gym.

We consulted with a HVAC company and the exhaust fan was recommended to us as the best option for our needs. The fan will improve the comfort of all by providing much needed ventilation and cooling in the gym during our P.E. classes, sporting events, parish gatherings, Christmas and Spring programs, and the Shakespeare play. This fan will cost $10,000. Through your generous stewardship, I know that we can reach this goal tonight if we all come together! So, please raise your paddle high!

In Gratitude,

Connor Geraghty Principal
