CHURCH OF SAINT AGNES NEW YORK, N.Y.

March 18, 2018

The Fifth Sunday of Lent Entrance Hymn: #48

Offertory Hymn: #42

Processional Hymn: #49

Passion Sunday

(Traditional Latin Mass)

TRY DAILY MASS Change your life for the better. Get closer to

Our Lord. How? Stop by and spend some time in

church. Put your thoughts aside and be in the Pres-

ence of the Lord. Once a week, apart from Sunday,

come to Mass. The Mass is the perfect prayer and

brings us back to Our Lord’s death and resurrection

for us through the Cross. If you attend at lunchtime,

you’re afternoon will be better and more peaceful.

In the morning, it changes your day.

Stations of the Cross St. Agnes offers Stations of the Cross, lead by a Priest, every Friday in Lent. Stations

follow the 5:10PM Mass.

Booklets are provided to the

Faithful so we can all pray together. Note: A plenary indulgence may be

granted to those who piously pray the Stations

of the Cross. The usual conditions of receiving the Eucharist, going to Confession,

and prayers for the Holy Father apply.

Easter Spiritual Bouquet… Now is the time to enroll your living and de-ceased friends and relatives into St. Agnes’s Spiritual Bouquet. Pick up an envelope in the rectory office, fill out your information, and include your offering. Your envelope will be placed on the Altar for all of our Easter Masses. You will also receive a special Mass card to send to your intention.

Reconciliation Monday—March 26th “Reconciliation Monday” is scheduled for March 26th. It is an Archdiocesan-wide effort to make the sacrament of Reconciliation available to the faith-ful in preparation for Easter. St. Agnes is participating in Reconciliation Monday; therefore, our confession schedule for March 26th has been extended. In addi-tion to our regular schedule, confessions will be heard from 3pm—9pm. Don’t wait until the last minute!

In March, we remember St. Joseph,

Guardian of the Church,

and Patron of those who labor.

Glorious St. Joseph, model of all who are devot-

ed to labor, obtain for me the grace to work in the

spirit of penance in expiation of my many sins; to

work conscientiously by placing love of duty above my

inclinations; to gratefully and joyously deem it an

honor to employ and to develop by labor the gifts I

have received from God, to work methodically, peace-

fully, and in moderation and patience, without ever

shrinking from it through weari-

ness or difficulty to work; above

all, with purity of intention and

unselfishness, having unceasingly

before my eyes death and the ac-

count I have to render of time lost,

talents unused, good not done,

and vain complacency in success,

so baneful to the work of God. All

for Jesus, all for Mary, all to imi-

tate thee, O patriarch St. Joseph!

This shall be my motto for life and

eternity. Amen.

The Church of Saint Agnes Holy Week 2018

Note from the Pastor...

Dear Friends & Parishioners,

As you know, our Tabernacle has been sent to Chicago for repairs and cleaning. We hoped to receive the Tabernacle for Holy Week, but, unfortunately, it doesn’t look like that will happen. The repair compa-ny needs to send out parts of the Tabernacle to have them properly plated. We hope to have our Tabernacle for Pentecost; we’ll keep you posted.

The center of the Catholic Church and the world is Holy Eucharist and Our Lady is the first Tabernacle.

I remind you that we continue to need your help for the expense of this important project. Repairing doors, installing locks, and cleaning our Tabernacle costs $30,000. I ask you to consider an Easter gift to St. Agnes for our Tabernacle and I pray someone will consider a gift to cover entirely the expenses of the project. Gifts can be placed in the collection box at Mass, dropped off at our rectory during normal work-ing hours, or mailed in. We deeply appreciate any contributions for our Tabernacle.

Lastly, please make note of our Holy Week schedule. If you haven’t already done so, consider the Tenebrae service on Spy Wednesday or attending our Last Seven Words on Good Friday. Holy Week is the most important period in the Church’s calendar and brings us closer to the Death and Resurrection of the Lord as we celebrate Easter Sunday.

Yours in Christ, Fr. Michael Barrett

St. Theresa of Calcutta on Lent… Lord, You accepted patiently and humbly the

rebuffs of human life, as well as the tortures of Your

Crucifixion and Passion. Help us to accept the pains

and conflicts that come to us each day as opportuni-

ties to grow as people and become more like You. En-

able us to go through them patiently and bravely,

trusting that You will support us. Make us realize that

it is only by frequent deaths of ourselves and our self-

centered desires that we can come to live more fully;

for it is only by dying with You that we can rise with

You. Source: A Gift for God: Prayers and Meditations, HarperSanFrancisco

Good Thoughts

Evil thoughts are best destroyed by good thoughts that crowd them, evil loves by stronger loves of the good. Evil is not to be fought, head-on, by mere brute willpower; it is better for us to flank it, to drive it from the field by a greater intensity of good-ness, a greater love of God. A mind filled with ideas of love and beauty has little room for evil notions.

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
