DON’T DESPAIR – REPAIR!Tina learnt how to solder – repairing her

treasured Roberts radio. Dale and Kathy had been flooded two days before but still came to volunteer. Greg may be able to mend 2-year old James’ bike through the magic of 3-D printing.

These were just some of the highlights at Royston’ first Repair Cafe in February where volunteer menders and owners of broken items. 24 items were brought for assessment, including TVs, printers and chairs. Nine items were fully repaired and owners of all other items except one were advised about getting further help from local contacts. Only one item was declared ‘beyond repair’ and that will be used for spare parts.

Have you got items that need mending in your garage, shed, cellar or roof space? If so, bring them along to the second Royston Repair Cafe. It’s 10am – 1pm on Sunday 27 April at Meridian School, Royston. It’s free, but booking is essential. Book your place online at www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/second-royston-repair-cafe-tickets-10921864591.

Britain’s most famous daffodil festival takes place on the weekend of 5/6th April 2014. The residents in the South Cambridgeshire village of Thriplow are getting ready for their 46th annual Daffodil Weekend, when between 7000 and 10 000 people visit to see the wonderful blooms . Virtually everyone in the village does something towards the event, be it baking cakes, helping serve teas, working in the car park or picking

up litter at the end of the day to bring off one of the best loved charity events in Cambridgeshire.Daffodil Weekend started in 1969 because the church was in need of major roof repairs. Residents

decided to open up their gardens and made cups of tea from their own houses. They made an amazing £206 and were so delighted they decided to do it all again the following year – and so Thriplow Daffodil Weekend was born. Since 1969 a total of over £400,000 has been raised for local charities.

This year we are supporting Home-Start Royston & South Cambridgeshire (www.hsrsc.org.uk/) as our external charity. Home-Start helps families with children under the age of five cope with post natal depression, illness, isolation, bereavement, disability, domestic abuse and much more, offering regular support and practical help to alleviate stress with a view to preventing family crisis and

breakdown.Visitors step back in time, walking traffic-free lanes and connecting footpaths, visiting residents ‘Open Gardens’, Craft Barns, Marquees,

Stalls and Demonstrations, and experiencing the warm and friendly atmosphere. There is something for everyone, young and old; from a flower festival in the Church and Sheepdog demonstrations on the Meadow, to

Morris Dancers outside the pub and vintage vehicles and classic cars at the School. Heavy horses give dray rides up and down the main street and there is traditional music wherever you go. Local food producers are celebrated at ‘Taste of Thriplow’ on Peggs Close and no visitor should miss the home-baked, ‘Thriplow Teas’. The community owned traditional British pub The Green Man will be hosting their usual hog roast at the front of the building and will have real ales in both the pub and in the “Taste of Thriplow” tent. Everything you require for a great day out is catered for.

NEW ATTRACTIONS FOR 2014: • Classic Cars • Local Food Fair • Steam Organ • Miniature Steam Railway Rides • Folk Music Tent 5th and 6th April, 11 am to 5pm £5 for adults, £2.50 for children and under school age get in FREE. www.thriplowdaffodils.org.uk

SPRING IN TO SINGING WITH ROYSTON CHORAL SOCIETYFounded 1974 – 40 years of making fine music locallyDo you sing in the shower? Hum along to music in the car? Have to restrain

yourself from singing aloud to your iPod on the train? Admire the new singers Gareth Malone’s choirs?

Then come along to Royston Choral Society’s next Open Rehearsal April 29th 8.00pm at Royston Parish Church. RCS understands that many potential singers are put off by the thought of auditions so we invite new singers to come along for up to 3 weeks, starting with the open rehearsal, free of charge, to see how you get on. You will not be asked to sing on your own. If you chose to stay with us, termly fees are reasonable and include music hire.

One of our altos had never sung in a choir before attending an RCS Open Rehearsal. Now she says singing with RCS is ‘challenging, satisfying and a good diversion from everyday life’ – and she’s even been abroad on singing holidays! Just in the last two years groups from RCS have sung in New York’s Carnegie Hall and in Italy.

RCS sings a wide range of music from Bach to the Beach Boys, classical works with orchestra and soloists to mixed programmes in small village churches.

Spring Forward To DriveA series of Spring tips from driving school L2K.TyresProbably one of the most important components on any type of car that we all take for granted. They have had a very hard winter to deal with unless you fitted “winter specific tyres” (to be used below 4oC only) scrabbling for grip & hauling your car through snow, ice & for some very deep water! They are your only contact with the planet when you’re driving & should be in good condition. Minimum legal tread depth is 1.6mm but minimum effective depth is actually 3mm - so now that the weather is changing, get them checked! Make sure pressures are correct as this will also affect handling & performance.BrakesHard winters mean we probably use the brakes more than normal too, get them checked it’s the only thing on the car that will stop you when you have to!

Discs can get corroded, pads can wear prematurely, calipers can leak or seize, drums can seize, hydraulics can get contaminated, handbrakes & cables can deteriorate in bad weather, think safety - can you stop in good time? If anyone would like any assistance on vehicle preparation & driv-ing techniques please call [email protected] on 07867 851203, also on facebook!

It’s one of the most iconic car shows in the motoring calendar, and this year the stars were out in full force in Detroit.

As the covers came off the cars in Motor City, we were treated to some key new model introductions and not just from the home American brands.

The Europeans, Japanese and Koreans were all out in full force too with some stellar debuts of key cars for the UK market. Here’s our pick of the new models.Mercedes C Class

This is big news for one of the most competitive sectors in the UK market. Meet Mercedes’ new C Class, a car that’ll take the fight to its bitter rival, and better selling, BMW 3 Series. Merc has worked wonders in the cabin – the quality is stunning and will make German rivals sit up and take notice. The manufacturer says this is their ‘most agile and efficient car ever’ and will be a ‘new benchmark’ in the segment. We’ll have to wait and see about that – but there’s little doubt they’ve got the looks spot on.Toyota FT-1

This bonkers crazy concept was created by Toyota’s sandal wearing Californian design team – but don’t fear, it’s no hippy machine. The FT-1 stands for ‘Future Toyota’ and while it is said to be a spiritual successor

to the iconic Supra and 2000GT it’s really designed to show the maker’s future design direction. There’s no word on what’s under the bonnet at present, but rumour has it it’s likely to be a traditional combustion engine with high output. BMW M4 / M3

Nothing gets car fans excited quite like an M-badged BMW and Detroit had not one, but two of them. The M4 is the new name in the line-up – the coupe version of the performance car. There’s a new M3, now a saloon only, and both share a new six-cylinder turbo-charged unit for the first time. BMW says emissions and fuel economy are 25 per cent better, though, so don’t mourn the V8’s death for too long. The new 2 Series Coupe was shown off in Detroit too – but it stole little of the limelight…Infi niti Q50 Eau Rouge

If the Q50 is up-and-coming Infiniti’s answer to the 3 Series and C Class, then this is the AMG or M-badged rival. Draped in carbon fibre and drawing inspiration from the Red Bull F1 team hook-up, the Eau Rouge concept – named after Spa’s all-or-nothing corner – is believed to get a 500bhp powerplant if it ever gets the go-ahead.

DETROIT MOTOR SHOW STARSOver the next two issues, James Baggott, editor of CarDealerMagazine.co.uk, reports on the big new car debuts breaking cover in Motor City

FOR YOUR NEXT HOLIDAY OR EXCURSIONA dream has come true for Cambridge based coach driver

Robert Krueger who is now running his own holiday company. Robert received his passenger service vehicle license in 2003 making him, at that time, one of the youngest coach drivers in Britain. Today, just ten years later, he is running his own holiday company. While working for a number of tour operators, both in the UK and Europe, Robert occasionally drove for Tony’s Tours, a Cambridge based holiday company. Last year, when the founder Tony Hall announced his retirement, Robert Krueger bought the company. “It was a tremendous opportunity.” He explains. “The company has a loyal customer base and a schedule of well-established holidays and day excursions.”

Now rebranded ‘Eclipse Coaches’ the company continues to offer small ‘club’ style packages. “There is a group size beyond which a holiday can seem impersonal,” says Krueger. “We tend to keep to 30 to 35 people for most holidays: although we can - and already are in some cases - running tours for up to 80 people.”

The company is also seeing a new generation return to coach travel as an alternative to using their car to reach holiday destinations or events. Often people prefer not to drive home from a show or a day beside the sea: especially as Eclipse Coaches provides local pickup within Cambridge and the surrounding villages.

Eclipse Coaches is expanding its range of holidays and excursions to include European breaks and event focussed holidays. It is also offering logistics and travel services for corporate events. As Krueger points out “We see this as a logical move as Cambridge has a large number of small high tech companies and we can offer relevant, themed events for computer and biotech companies in locations such as Bletchley Park and Down House - the home of Charles Darwin.”For further information on upcoming tours, holidays and excursions, or to enquire about your corporate event, contact Robert Krueger on 01223 208926

THE ROYSIA WOMEN’S CLUBDuring March we had some very

interesting speakers. The month started with Margaret Rogers “From Russia with Love”. With the help of her slides she took us along the Russian Waterways visiting the winter and summer palaces along the way.

The next week wildlife photographer Jeff Harrison showed slides on “ Kingfishers Up Close and Personal”.

Then Trevor Gunton explained about Vikings and their place in our history.

This was followed by author Dick Kirby on the time he spent while working for the Flying Squad.

We finished the month with Lucy Lewis tellling us about a woman’s life in the Army, where she was the first woman bomb disposal officer.

Visitors are always welcome. Why not come along and meet us on a Monday Evening in Royston Town Hall. Doors open at 7.30 for an 8pm start.

For more details please contact Wendy Pearce 01763 231381 or Mavis Ingle 01763 222524 or email [email protected]

WI AMAt our meeting in March, Royston WI

AM invited Mandy Hague and colleagues from Crafty Corner at Philimore Garden Centre to share some of their craft ideas with us. The morning was titled ‘Come and try something crafty’ and the members had the opportunity to try out a variety of craft activities, which included sewing felt rose brooches, making cards and also sequin eggs. A very successful morning was had with the members taking home the items they had made.

This year in May we celebrate our 30th

Birthday and we would like to invite any old members to join us. If you are interested in attending our celebration can you please let our President, Monica Gray know by phoning her on 01763 245895.

Wednesday 9th April is the day of our

next meeting which will be held in the Market Hill Rooms, Royston. Our talk will be by Laura Woodcock from Teenage Cancer Trust. Visitors are welcome from 10.00 am when refreshments are available.

TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILDSpeaker for our March meeting

was Jean Bawcutt, who displayed and talked about several quilts she had brought with her. Each quilt had its own story, recording stages in her life – the births of her grandchildren and some of the amazing journeys she and her husband had enjoyed. Her experiences were brought to life by the colours used, along with her expert needlecraft. One particularly complicated design depicted their Pacific trip to New Zealand, Australia, Fiji and Hawaii which included landmarks, flora and fauna. Then followed our Annual General Meeting and supper.

ICKNIELD SCHOOL FITZWILLIAM VISIT

This term all the children from reception to year 4 have visited the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. Over the last couple of weeks 60 children on each day have gone to the museum and had a wonderful experience. We have worked with the museum teachers and artists to introduce children to the range of objects and paintings on display. The children have had the opportunity to look in depth at certain pieces of art, using textiles to help support their understanding of the paintings. They have all made their own pieces of art work, which will be put together into one treasure chest containing work from the whole school. It will be our own mini-museum!

Our aims for this trip were to inspire the children and encourage them to look closely at the pieces of art. We also wanted them to see what an interesting place the Fitzwilliam Museum is so that they might go back and visit again: One child said ‘I didn’t realise I liked museums this much’. All the children enjoyed their visits and had fun. Cairo (from year 3) summed up the experience when he said it was ‘Awesome!’

GRENEWAY CHOIR PERFORM AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALLOn Sunday 16 March, thirty four excited Year 5 and 6 pupils from

Greneway made the journey to the Royal Albert Hall to perform in this year’s Hertfordshire Schools’ Gala Concert. The pupils have been rehearsing twice a week since Christmas to learn all the repertoire and their hard work really did pay off.

The evening had the theme of the anniversary of the First World War and included a piece commissioned for the occasion. ‘We Will Remember Them’ drew together war poetry and military

style percussion to create an evocative and moving work. The concert opened with a ‘Prelude’ composed by competition winning Jamie Roberts, a former Greneway pupil. The programme then moved through jazz and rock and roll to current pop. The pupils were given the opportunity to literally ‘put their lighters (or torches) in the air’ when Gabz, of Britain’s Got Talent fame, sang her debut single ‘Lighters’. She is currently a pupil at the Nobel school in Stevenage. The concert finale was a jaw dropping rendition of Coldplay’s ‘Viva La Vida’. The sound made by 1100 children accompanied by the Hertfordshire School’s Symphony Orchestra was truly incredible. A fantastic event that the Greneway pupils were proud to be involved in.

WI PMBrian Carline gave us an amusing talk on Life in our Schools. He had been a teacher by day and a

Comedian by night for 40 years. He and his friend called themselves “ A Very Funny Double Act”. They managed to get to the final of “New Faces” but suffered humiliation by coming last.

He became a teacher because he thought it would be nice to have 6 weeks holiday. He got an interview for a job but had no qualifications so he took along his Cycling Proficiency Certificate. They were so desperate that they hired him. He has taught all age groups from Dagenham to Islington to Epping and the Kings Cross Area. He said do not underestimate children but be firm and fair and never turn your back on the class. He told some very funny stories including one about Peter Ebden, the Snooker Player who missed lessons to go to the local snooker hall to make a bit of pocket money. After 6 years of retirement he still misses the life, especially Christmas time. Once when he was giving another talk to a W.I., the ladies went out and came back at regular intervals, he found out afterwards that the local chiropodist was paying a visit.

The Competition for a School Photograph was won by Mary Taylor and the first Raffle prize by Rita Turner. Our next meeting is on April 10th in the Heritage Hall at 1.45 to 4.00pm when Rosemary Wheeler will talk on “The life of a Woman Butcher”.

DANE’S BLOODPulsatilla Vulgaris is the rather uninspiring

name for the bright purple and yellow flower featured on our cover this month. It’s more commonly known as Pasque Flower and, rather more excitingly, as Dane’s Blood.

The Pasque Flower is the county flower of Hertfordshire and it blooms in late March / early May on the well drained chalky soil of Church Hill on Therfield Heath. It’s name means “like Paschal” or of Easter and legend tells that it springs from the blood of dead Vikings! This fable may well have developed as it grows in the undisturbed soil of ancient barrows – like the ones that can be found on the rolling heath land of Coronation Meadows. This site is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Local Nature reserve and one of the largest colonies of this rare plant.

Why not venture out to see them and follow this walk printed with kind permission of Great Shelford Parish Council (http://shelford.lucidata.com/walks/walk44.htm) and pop in to the Fox and Duck at Therfield for a pint or bite to eat.

LOCAL ARTIST AUCTIONS WORK FOR CANCER CHARITY

Royston artist Lisa Stanway is auctioning one of her oil paintings to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The mother-of-three lost her sister, Paula, to cancer in 2007, at the young age of 33. Lisa decided to raise money for Macmillan Nurses by way of thanks and appreciation for their work.

Lisa said, “I’ve always enjoyed all sorts of arts and crafts, but with bringing up three young children, there is not much time for painting. After many years, I have recently started oil painting again”.

The original oil painting, titled “Under a Stormy Sky”, has been framed and ready to hang. Mrs Stanway hopes to raise as much as possible by auctioning it on the eBay website for ten days in April.

Lisa added, “Every single penny raised will go directly to Macmillan as they do such a fantastic job”.

Interested buyers can make bids via ebay - search for “Under a Stormy Sky” from Friday 4th April , with the auction ending at 6pm on Sunday 13th April.

POLITICS WITH INTEGRITY?You can tell there’s a general election looming next year, because

our politicians are falling over themselves to deliver smiling sound-bites, hinting at new crowd-pleasing legislation.

Now I know that UK elections can involve negative name-calling and the ‘vote for us because the others are worse’ interviews, but that’s politics, isn’t it?

In the corporate world, to be accused of ‘playing politics’ is usually an insult, although there are those who believe we could all learn useful and constructive lessons from our Right Honourable friends.

I was going to write about communication but, as The Listing closed for press, I heard the news about the death of veteran politician, Tony Benn. Whatever you think about his politics, he was a highly principled MP who fought for the rights of the individual for 50 years. Many bosses would do well to take a leaf out of his book: he knew exactly what he stood for, and managed himself with integrity.

In an interview in 2005, Tony Benn said every politician should ask themselves five important questions: “What power have you got? Where did you get it from? In whose interests do you exercise it? To whom are you accountable? How can we get rid of you?”

He then added, “Only democracy gives us that right. That is why no-one with power likes democracy and that is why every generation must struggle to win it and keep it; including you and me, here and now.”

I think those questions should be asked by every person wielding power or authority over any other, be they a boss, a manager, a team leader – or even a teacher with a class-full of students. Answer those questions and then lead from the front, trusting your principles, knowing who you are ‘working’ for and never giving up the fight for what you believe in. www.julianberry.co.uk

Are you closer to being the goddess of grime than the queen of clean? Spring sunshine means that it’s the ideal time to don your apron, snap on your Marigolds and refresh your home from top to bottom.

If you really can’t bear the thought of tackling every room at once, you could spend perhaps an hour a week or else tackle one room at a time until your home feels truly transformed.

So, where should you begin? The obvious place is with a good, old-fashioned tidy up, paying attention to all your tables, shelves, floors and other surfaces, inside kitchen and bathroom cupboards, bedroom wardrobes and chests of drawers.

Once you have cleared the space, you are almost ready to begin. But

not quite. Make a list of what needs doing (this may be rather time-consuming, but will be worth it in the end) and allocate some time for each chore. Then dig out appropriate clothing. What to wear will depend on the task at hand, but should include an old shirt and trousers, and could also mean rubber gloves, sturdy shoes, an apron and a dust mask or safety goggles.

Next, assemble your equipment – from brooms and scrubbing brushes to buckets and cloths. Having it ready beforehand will save time and effort later. Lastly, find the cleaning products you’ll require, including an all-purpose household cleaner, washing-up liquid, furniture polish, non-chlorine bleach, anti-mildew tile and bath cleaner and window cleaner.

CLEAN AND FRESHClear the clutter, sort your stuff and make everything in your home spick and span – your home will feel revitalised, and so will you, says Katherine Sorrell

Store them in a heavy-duty caddy with a handle. At last you’re ready, so refer back to your list of what needs doing

– you’ll see it divides into five main areas: vacuuming, dusting, mopping/scrubbing, washing and wiping, and polishing as well as room specific tasks, such as turning mattresses, spot-cleaning upholstery, cleaning the oven, defrosting the fridge, descaling the shower head and beating rugs. You could also sort out those less frequently required jobs such as steam-cleaning the carpets or having the chimney swept.

Before you embark, bear in mind the basic principles of cleaning: work from top to bottom (dust the light fitting before polishing the table beneath) and tackle dry before wet (vacuum before mopping, obviously). Try to be organised, whether you work one room at a time or one task at a time. With a little forethought, preparation and organisation, spring cleaning can be a rewarding activity that will restore your home to its rightful place as a peaceful haven that is well-kept, tidy and gleamingly, squeaky clean.

FIVE OLD-FASHIONED CLEANING TIPS• Polish chrome taps with vinegar, a little baking soda on a damp cloth or a gentle rub of white toothpaste• To dust carved wooden furniture, put a dab of furniture cream on a damp cloth, and hold it over the bristles of a soft toothbrush – you will be able to work your way into all the cracks and crevices• De-grease a vinyl floor (under the oven, for example) by rubbing with a halved lemon, then mop with an all-purpose cleaner• Spot-clean upholstery by gently rubbing in a little foamy shaving cream and removing with a clean, damp cloth• Beat a rug by hanging it over a washing line and using a tennis racket

ROYSIA PERFORMS MIDSUMMER MAGICStudlands Rise have been very busy recently! For two weeks in March the children (and parents!)

have been cycling and scooting to school everyday as part

of the Big Pedal competition, organised by the Sustrans charity. The school came overall 50th place out of the 150 small schools that took part, averaging 60% of pupils cycling/scooting everyday. They were 5th in the East of England region and the top scoring Hertfordshire school.

The children also dressed up as a favourite book character for World Book Day. The school has recently spent a substantial amount of money redeveloping their reading scheme and the children are loving the new books.

On Friday 14th March the Mayor joined in the fun by arriving at school on his scooter and presenting the children with a special certificate in celebration of their efforts.

A WORLD OF EDUCATIONCome along to Kumon’s Maths and

English Assessment Event on Monday 7 April to find out what your child can achieve

The Kumon Maths and English Programmes have been helping children of all ages and abilities across the world study beyond their school level for 60 years. The programmes enable children to develop their study skills and confidently tackle advanced work.

With findings, such as those in the recent PISA report, continuously telling us that literacy and numeracy skills in the UK and Ireland are falling behind the rest of the world, perhaps it is time to find out what our world-class education programmes can offer your child and buck this national trend.

Come along to a Kumon Maths and English Assessment Event at the Kumon Royston Study Centre on Monday 7 April and let us tell you what skills your child currently has, and which ones we can help them develop.

Through daily study of the Kumon programmes, your child will develop the independent learning skills to learn for themselves, so they do not become dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others. Your child will then be able to apply these skills to all subjects and outside of school too.

The Kumon Maths and English Assessment Event will take place at the Catholic Church Hall, Melbourn Road, Royston. To register your attendance at this event contact Sally McMeekin on 01763 248 562 or email [email protected]

MERIDIAN STUDENTS VISIT SHEPRETHAs part of their AS level course the Biology students visited

Shepreth Wildlife Park to learn about the role that zoos have in conserving endangered species of animals. The students were given a very informative talk about conservation and had a chance to handle some of the animals from the zoo - there were snakes, African land snails, millipedes, some skunks to name but a few. They then had an opportunity to have a look around the park and see first-hand the role that zoos have in preserving species of animals.

In the garden... April Top tips and ideas to improve your garden! Spring has arrived in the garden, in this new feature I will be suggesting ways to make improvements to your outdoor spaces to make them more enjoyable.

1. Harmony of materialsWhen planning any hard landscaping, for example patios, walls or gravelled areas, it is important when selecting the stone that you consider others used in the area. I recommend using similar colours to the bricks on your house or existing walls. 2. Gradual RevealHowever large or small, the best gardens offer a sense of experience as the garden reveals itself. This can be achieved using a well-positioned larger shrub, section of hedging, willow fencing, wood structures or a rendered wall with windows to show there is more to discover and explore beyond!3. All year round interestNow is the time to be capturing the growing season. When planning new planting try to include plants that will offer all year round interest. There are many good evergreen choices such as box and yew that will give good structure throughout the seasons and I recommend starting with these. Then arrange other deciduous shrubs and flowers to provide contrast, colour and variation. 4. ScentScent is a very important way in which we connect with the garden. Consider where to best position scented plants for maximum enjoyment. Lavender and Rosemary work well close to a path where they can be brushed passed. Roses and honey suckles are great for pergolas and arches or trained around an entrance to a door. Jasmine provides a beautiful scent ideal for relaxing warm sunny evenings. Scent is very objective so choose plants that you will never tire of smelling especially when it is growing by your patio.5. Vertical interestEvery garden needs vertical interest. This could be achieved using a pergola or arch with climbing plants or a modern structure providing a more dramatic effect. Alternatively and more simply vertical interest can be achieved by training plants such as Wisteria or climbing roses up existing structures such as walls and fences. Where space will allow a suitable tree choice will give years of enjoyment.

Go for it! Start with little changes, it can make all the difference to your enjoyment of the garden! Richard Arnott / gardendesignsolutions / Garden Design & Build www.richardarnott.com [email protected] www.thinkgardenthinkrichard.co.uk

misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn

up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Royston

that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just

the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

A visit to any nursery or garden centre at this time of year will reveal a brilliant array of herbaceous perennials. Right now they might be small and not look particularly enticing but just take a look at the illustration on the label and you will see that these small plants have great potential. They’re also great value, usually somewhere around the £1.50-£2.50 mark.

It’s essential that newly planted perennials are given that little bit of extra tender loving care. Small plants such as these are more likely to be prone to any weather extremes and even plants in larger pots should be well established. When you ease the plants out of their pots, if you see a really plentiful supply of roots that usually means you have purchased a good plant.

Check the plant labels to see the ultimate spread of the plant. For the best effect you generally want to grow several individuals of the same species and I suggest you choose an odd number, perhaps three, or five for a much larger garden, as this invariably makes a better display than if even numbers of plants are used. It may be tempting to plant too close

and although this will provide a better looking display initially, over-crowded plants are less likely to become well established, will have to be moved in the near future and in the meantime will be more prone to numerous diseases.

It’s also essential to plant at the correct depth. With herbaceous perennials you need to make sure that you place the plant in the ground to the same depth that it was in the container and although you may decide to mulch the soil afterwards, do remember not to mulch right up to or over the crown of the plant, as this is likely to lead to poor growth and maybe even dieback.

Weed control is essential and you can either hoe regularly between the plants to prevent the weeds causing competition or you can use a deep mulch or perhaps even place squares of landscape fabric or black polythene around each plant. Do remember however, if you use polythene, rain will not be able to penetrate through it and so the plants are more likely to suffer from drought. With landscape fabric this is not a problem. I’m a great fan of copper-impregnated and coated fabrics as

these help to keep weeds and slugs and snails at bay. Once you have dug over the whole bed, then it’s well worthwhile adding a general fertilizer. If you notice that the soil is on the heavy side, I suggest incorporating plenty of bulky organic matter and grit. Similarly, if the soil is excessively dry, then you could try to improve its texture by incorporating large quantities of any good bulky organic matter. Once the plants are in position, firm the soil thoroughly and do take care not to compact it if it’s on the heavy side. Regular watering is essential and if the ground is not already quite moist, you should water the plants in well. Check them regularly for signs of any pests or diseases as it will be much easier to stop something in its tracks if you start to take action early on in the season.
