Tottori Prefecture ©TRAIL ON
A wonderland of coastal topography revealing remnants of the formation of the Sea of Japan and a UNESCO Global GeoparkSan’in Kaigan National Park stretches from Kyoto Prefecture's Kyotango in the east to Tottori Prefecture's city of Tottori in the west, encompassing roughly 75 kilometers of coastline. The park’s mountainous area extends to the sea, where a ria coast (submerged coastline), striking sea cliffs, caves, and reefs have developed over countless millennia. In contrast are the park’s iconic sand dunes, including the famous Tottori Sand Dunes, which are formed by sand created by marine erosion and transported via rivers. Along with these distinctive landscapes, the park also boasts diverse rock varieties, leading it to be known as a "museum of coastal topography.”In 2010, the geological significance of San’in Kaigan was recognized internationally when San'in Kaigan Geopark become a certified member of the Global Geoparks Network. San'in Kaigan National Park is located in the heart of San'in Kaigan Geopark. In 2020, the San'in Kaigan Geopark Trail opened, becoming the third longest trail in Japan. Here, you can experience the wonders of nature and the local lifestyle and enjoy a variety of activities that make the most of the beautiful natural environment and topography. You'll find incredible hot spring resorts made possible by the area's geographical and geology features, and an abundance of local delicacies, including snow crab and other seafood harvested from the bountiful coastal areas and world-class Tajima beef.

Genbudo Cave became famous as a basalt (volcanic rock) mine during the 17th to 19th century. The Japanese word for basalt, "genbugan," comes from Genbudo. At the caves, you can admire spectacular columnar joints formed by volcanic activity 1.6 million years ago. Genbudo is also known as the fi rst place in the world where geomagnetic reversal was observed. In addition to Genbudo Cave, there are four other caves: Seiryudo, Byakkodo, Minami-Suzakudo, and Kita-Suzakudo.The park is currently closed for maintenance. The park is scheduled to reopen in spring 2022. Post-maintenance, the park will charge an admission fee.
