PRE-PLAN YOUR FUNERAL TODAYPre-planning your funeral needn’t be stressful. Whether traditional or

guide you through the pre-planning stages, taking care of all the details so the service is everything you’d like it to be.

Continued from page 1She says she saw the figure

on director and Cavalcade spearhead Robin Suther-land’s computer when she was in his office.

“I’m not exactly sure what that figure meant; maybe they are looking for extra funds for overheads but it was interesting.”

Marlborough Civic Thea-tre chief executive Andrew Scott says there had been no increase to the cost of the theatre which remains at the $22million figure that was made public in June.

Jessica says she questions the transparency of financial information being presented to MDC on the matter.

“I know we were presented a one pager of accounts on the theatre and I know that we wouldn’t approve a grant to a community group for $400 if

they only presented that.“We would make them jump

through hoops compared to that, it doesn’t seem right to me, it’s all very secretive.”

Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman says there has been no increase in the $22 million figure.

“It’s a capped amount (with Robinson Construction)… I’m asking almost every day if we are likely to be up for any more money and I haven’t been told anything that sug-gests we will be.”

Jessica says she has not seen anything that suggests the new theatre will be viable and says event organisations like the RSA, Destination Marlborough and the Scenic Circle Convention Centre would need to work together to change that.

“We don’t have enough people that want to go to the

theatre and I haven’t seen anything that suggests to me that it will be a good financial move so I can’t vote for it, it’s bad governance, and we haven’t been given

the information to suggest this is a wise way to spend ratepayer’s money.

“I believe ratepayers will end up owning the theatre over time.”

Mayor stands by figure as councillor questions viability

Stay alert for whooping coughThe Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service is recommending that all parents check their children are fully immunised against pertussis, also known as whooping cough. An outbreak of pertussis cases has been reported in the lower South Island. This year, from May 1 to July 31, there have been 17 cases of suspected pertussis reported in the Nelson Marlborough region. NMDHB Public Health medical officer of health Dr Andrew Lindsay says as pertussis outbreaks tend to occur on three to five year cycles, we are now due for another outbreak.

By Adam PoulopoulosCountry duo NeillyRich have

added a New Zealand national music award to their growing resume.

NeillyRich, aka Blenheim-raised Matthew McNeilly and fiancée Amelia Richards, was announced the duo/group of the year at the Country Music Awards New Zealand in Hamil-ton on Saturday night.

Matthew says the MC prefaced announcing their win by reciting a NeillyRich lyric.

“I was thinking to myself ‘where have I heard that line before?”

He says the duo were “pretty stoked” to claim the award.

“We reacted like crazy people I think.

“When I was doing the accept-ance speech Amelia had to take over – I got a bit emotional and a bit squeaky.

“It means a lot to us.”NeillyRich have been ap-

proached by two New Zealand

music festivals and radio repre-sentatives since the win.

Matthew says the hard work, constant writing and touring and recent partnerships with Tomkins Guitars and Australian firm Market the Music all contributed to NeillyRich’s win.

He says winning the award has been a long standing ambition.

“I guess ever since we got the duo together it’s been something on our radar, and being a country singer from Blenheim and win-ning something at the CMANZ was always an end goal.

“To get it so early in my career is quite special.”

NeillyRich are playing at the reinstated Blues, Brews & BBQs festival in Blenheim on Novem-ber 28, and The Yard Bar the night before.

Before that, Matthew and Ame-lia are getting married in Sydney and playing at the Mildura Coun-try Music Festival, the biggest festival of its kind in Australia, in late September.

By Jacob PageFormer Marlborough Boys’

College head boy PJ Lupi con-tinues to make a “miraculous” recovery following a scooter ac-cident in Phuket, his brother says.

PJ had been left in a coma after the accident on July 6 but made steady progress and was transported back to New Zealand at the end of last month.

A Givealittle page set up to help cover the medical bills and the flight home raised more than $173,000, with more than $150,000 contributed in the first 48 hours following the accident.

PJ has been through the hospital system for assessment and has

been discharged to a specialist rehabilitation centre in Christch-urch.

Brother Joe Lupi says he has constant family support with

him.“PJ is making miraculous re-

covery progress and is walking (assisted) around the centre.

He is also able to speak for short periods of time and has remembered his family and their names and recognises them.

“His visual ability is intact, his hearing ability is intact, his motor skills are functioning, he does get tired easily and is still diagnosed with Post Traumatic Amnesia.

“This means he is with it some of the time but has limited short term memory ability, he still has a lot of brain re-wiring to take place and a long rehabilitation is ahead of him.

“His brain injury has been assessed as very severe, based on this, his current progress is miraculous and testament to the goodness of God who has blessed him and his family through this time,” Joe says.

“Prognosis from here is un-known, but a recovery is un-derway and he is with the best possible care team for his injury type.”

Joe wishes to thank everyone for their support, prayers and donations for PJ.

He says the financial situation is under control and the focus will continue to be his brother’s recovery.

By Adam Poulopoulos A Facebook post has sparked

widespread interest in Earth-care Environmental’s wheelie bin service that has arrived in Marlborough.

Earthcare’s ‘budget’ kerbside collection offers 80 litre, 120l and 240l bins for $2, $3 and $4 respectively, available for pick-up weekly or fortnightly.

A green waste bin is available for an extra dollar every week on a combo deal, or for $8 a month on its own.

The service was launched about a week ago, and Earthcare prod-uct specialist Karen Hewlett says the response has been “massive.”

Karen was making cold calls in preparation for Earthcare’s move to Marlborough. One cold call recipient posted about the service on the ‘Online Garage Sale – Marlborough’ page earlier this week, and received over 250

responses. The company now has a spe-

cific Marlborough Facebook page.

Earthcare owner Mike Jones says Marlburians have been attracted by the service’s low prices.

“A lot of places, especially pro-vincial towns, have a value ser-vice, but at the moment Blenheim has Auckland prices.”

He says wheelie bins allow outdoor rubbish storage and withstand animal attacks better than rubbish bags.

Currently the company has one driver, Blenheim-raised John Tinson, but Mike says he hopes to have a second permanent staff member in Marlborough by the end of the year.

Earthcare used to oversee the Marlborough District Council collection and operates in several centres in the North Island.

There have been plans to ex-pand into Marlborough since the MDC contract finished in

late 2013 but the company’s IT systems had to be improved before they made the move.

Social media storm on Earthcare arrival

By Adam Poulopoulos A Picton man is hoping to re-

vive the town’s carnival in 2017, 45 years after it was last held.

Glenn Howard wants to bring back activities like tug of war, powerboat racing, rowing, a talent quest and Mister and Miss Marlborough, and ally them with music and other entertainment including carnival rides.

He hopes the carnival will take place for two weeks in mid-to-late January, and will conclude with the annual Picton Maritime Festival. He sees the Picton Foreshore and Nelson Square as potential venues, and says he has had favourable feedback from the Marlborough District Council.

He wants it to be free to get

in the carnival doors. He sees revenue coming from stall site fees, with buses taking people between Blenheim and Picton hourly.

Glenn says Picton has been missing something to attract visitors in the last few years.

“It’ll turn Picton into Mardi Gras central. It’ll put us back on the map. Geographically we’re ideally located.

“To boost the carnival we’ve got the sounds, but it’ll be the carnival itself bringing people in.”

He has gauged interest with some business owners about keeping shops open until 10pm for the carnival’s duration.

“We can’t have people coming into Picton and the shops being all shut. It doesn’t work,” he says.

He used Queenstown’s retail hours during ski season, where businesses take advantage of cus-tomers coming off the mountain, as a comparison.

Glenn wants the carnival to be

held after other carnivals around the country finish up.

He says the proposed dates also fall in the middle of peak cruise ship season.

“For too long we’ve watched cruise ships come through, and buses have whipped people straight off to the wineries.

“I think we have something better to offer.”

Glenn is continuing to gauge interest, and hopes to set up a carnival committee in the near future.

Would you like the Picton Carnival to return? And what would you like to see there? Email [email protected] with your feedback.

Positive ageing - Understanding your prescription medicineDeteriorating health can arrive with age and about 40% of prescriptions are written for the over-65s.But this age group is also a big user of over-the-counter medicines and alternative remedies.Remarkably, many people don’t discuss their alternative medicine use with their own GP.To help minimise medication risk, it’s important to understand what your medication is for and how to take it correctly. Your GP, medical specialist or pharmacist can answer these

questions for you:• What is the name of the drug? • Has it got another name? • What is it for and how will it help

me? • How often should I take the

medicine? • What time of day should I take it?• How long will I need to keep

taking it? • Should I take it with food? • Do I need to stop drinking alcohol

while taking this medicine?• Are there any foods I should

avoid?• Will it interact with other

medicines I am using? • Can I take vitamins/herbal

remedies at the same time? • Are there any side effects to watch

for? • What should I do if I miss a dose? • How should I store this medicine? Contact your GP or pharmacist if you need more information about your medicines.

Council can provide a funding service to cover the cost of an approved solar water heating system which the ratepayer pays back over nine years through a targeted rate. It includes a charge for interest at 7%, administration and GST.Ratepayers must be up to date with their rates to be eligible to apply for this financing option. The upfront cost of a solar water heating system can range from $6,000

to $8,000 including installation and building consent costs although actual costs will depend on particular requirements. The Council offers a similar funding service for ratepayers who want to install approved home insulation.• A list of participating service

providers who will install solar water heating or home insulation through these schemes and more information about the schemes

is on the Council website: www.marlborough.govt.nz/Our-Community/Energy-Efficiency

Council has also agreed to investigate establishing both a Solar Electricity Scheme to cover the installation of photovoltaic panels as well as a Clean Heat scheme now that the EECA-subsidised heating scheme has closed.

made for the site by local business Norski Fibreglass Products Ltd, the subject of an overnight theft from the park. “We’d still like to know what happened because its cost ratepayers more than $4000 to replace the slide and repair the damage,” said Mr Hutchinson.

Housing issuesI think something needs to be said.I am a solo parent struggling to find accommo-dation for myself and my son who is two, this is a big issue here in Marlborough especially for Housing NZ homes. There are none for like minded people like myself who genuinely need help to get ac-commodation in Marlborough. This is I think a big issue that needs to be sorted. There are too many cases being declined for housing for so many different reasons. Why not instead of a dog park or a new library or spending money on a theatre that we don’t really need, spend money on building temporary accommodation for families, solo parents like myself, for males and females with kids that very soon are going to be homeless.Come on council sort it out. Awesome front page photo

What an awesome photo of four happy friends for life.

Free Bus You don’t always have to take your car to town. Use the “FREE” bus provided. How many more perks do you expect?

Great danceGreat dance was held in Redwoodtowns new look hall on 31st July. From jeans to diamonds, from rocking to waltzing. A great night was had by all.

Good night outWhat a great night out dancing at St. Christo-pher Hall last Friday. Reminds me of St. Pats, The Boathouse & Okaramio. Where can you get four hours entertainment for ten dollars plus a plate. We need more of these!

My mum & dad love the whitebait season at the diversion. Yes they are retired but are rate payers of MDC & have paid plenty of tax over their life time. They share their very little catch with others including strangers who otherwise would not get any. I say good on you Ma and Pa, keep up the good work.

Consideration would be greatThose that warm up their diesel vehicles before they go to work or mowing lawns early. Others work too, just not the hours you do. So have a thought. If curtains are not drawn....maybe they WERE sleeping.

Marlborough Facebook pagesSometimes texting on this page is the only access to having a voice people have.Although we don’t want abuse of course, some comments simply convey peoples frustration and opinion. Thanks for the opportunity to give an opinion, Sun paper.

Cheap tabletsI was excited when I spotted a TV ad for a 69 dollar tablet that would suit my internet needs. But when I made the trip to the store to buy it the salesman that came to 'help’ told me they didn’t have anything like that and tried to sell me a dearer tablet. I almost convinced myself that I must have been mistaken, so went home. On a whim I rang the shop and asked again, to be told they have plenty in stock at that price. Thanks Mr ‘assistant’ you made me waste time and petrol going there twice and you lied.

Strange phone callI received a strange phone call tonight from a company called Vivid Life Health selling vitamins from a UK based company. He said he was selling vitamins to the elderly. Beware of people selling you products over the phone. Our local chemist is a safer bet for buying vitamins! Told the man as much too! Dangerous!

Sleeping on the ground!! We have a futon mattress free it is clean and dry. How can we get this to the family?

Dear Ed,It was good to read your recent articles on

the plans for dog parks for the Marlborough area.

As owners of two Siberian Huskies we are strong supporters and advocates for dog parks.

We moved from Canterbury to Picton more than two years ago and miss the wonderful dog park facilities provided by the Christchurch City Council and other regional councils.

Dog parks are a great benefit to dogs, dog owners and the wider community.

They provide a safe environment for dogs to explore and run freely, opportunities to teach and socialise dogs and they also provide opportunities for dog owners and families to meet and share ideas and experiences.

We believe there are at least two possible suitable areas for dog parks in Picton.

Both sites are currently dog exercise areas and could be developed further into wonder-ful community facilities that would be used by locals and visitors alike.

Thank you for providing an opportunity for the public to voice their opinions.

Whitebaiters @ Diversion Some arrived on Tuesday night and are illegally parked in their buses/motorhomes for 4 nights before the season starts. Why aren’t the council policing this? The law is they are allowed 2 nights per calen-dar month except after the Whitebait season which begins the 15th AUGUST. Hello? Buy a whitebait licence and stay rent-free at the Diversion for three and a half months!

Absolutely agree.Something has to be done about the white-baiters at the Diversion.Come on council and DOC.

Murder on TV Dear Ed. I think New Zealand is going downhill when

we get ‘How to Murder your Wife’ on TV. I’ve always wanted to keep track of the many

killings happening here. Crime Watch even showed how to ambush

and rape someone. Didn’t last long. Though dogs are trained to attack for the

police, how many of those victims had to land in hospital to get their wounds healed?

I may just watch ‘How to Murder your Wife’ for a short time because I haven’t got a wife to murder. Ha.

Q My last meal on Earth would be...

Q One of my best holidayswas...

Turkey. Snorkelling Anzac cove will not be forgotten and how hospitable the Turkish are, especially to Kiwis.

Q My guilty TV pleasure is...

Binge watching! All the goodies like Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Fargo, Banshee.

Q I’m inspired by...

Passionate people.

Q What’s one thing that you’ll never throw away?

Rock Teddy. Made by my mum, he has only one eye and his favourite band is Tears for Fears.

Q Who would you love to have a meal with?

My family. Since we have all left home, we have all settled in different parts of the country and hardly ever get together.

Q What’s next on your wish list?

That my new career will be a successful and prosper-ous one.

Q What is the one thing Sun readers would be surprised to know about you?

I’ve spent some time with Ozzy Osbourne. He has an aura like you would never believe.

Roast chicken with gravy and all the trimmings, followed up with apple crumble.

Something that would make a difference like the Make a Wish Foundation.

What would you spend your last $100 on?

Talley’s Group Limited – Blenheim Division

By Adam Poulopoulos The Cancer Society, Marlborough

Community Potters and the region’s school children have come together for a Marlborough-wide project to raise cancer awareness.

The Marlborough Daffodils Project will see every Marlborough school-aged child produce a ceramic daffodil, which will then be collated to form a sculpture next year.

Between 1500 and 2000 daffodils have already been created by groups including Fairhall School, Rapaura School and Redwoodtown School.

Renwick School, Canvastown School and Kaikoura Primary School are among those awaiting their chance.

Organisers hope the project, set to contain between 4000 and 5000 daf-fodils, will be finished in time for next year’s Daffodil Day on August 26.

The daffodils will be ‘planted’ at an undecided location in Blenheim for about a week before being individually sold.

Proceeds will be split between the Cancer Society’s Marlborough centre and Marlborough Community Potters, who hope to use the money to fund bigger premises.

Marlborough Community Potters president Fran Maguire was approached by Cancer Society Marlborough fun-draiser and potter Zoe Gray about a year ago.

Zoe says she wanted to raise some money for the Cancer Society and build on Marlborough having the highest percentage of sunsmart-accredited schools in the country.

“Hopefully it helps us reinforce the message and reduce levels of skin cancer in Marlborough.”

Fran says the idea has continued to grow.

“I like naïve things, so I thought it would be better for the kids to make them (daffodils).

“We decided to expand the idea to be the biggest it can be, and get every kid in Marlborough to make one.

“Hopefully it represents a whole generation of Marlborough.”

Children are making each daffodil and painting them before Marlborough Community Potters half-bake and glaze them.

The project has also involved Marlborough organisations including Cuddon Engineering, who have donated metal rods to use as flower stems, the Blenheim Menz Shed, who will stick the stems to the daffodils and Safe Air, where the stems will be painted and daffodils stored.

The Marlborough District Council and Blenheim Rotary donated to Marlborough Community Potters to help them buy a bigger kiln and cope with the project’s demands.

Photographer Peter Burge is docu-menting the project, and the initiative can be tracked at the ‘Marlborough Daffodils Project 2016” Facebook page.

“We want to affect as many people as we can. It’s a really connected project,” Fran says.

Marlborough-wide project continues to flower

Time is running out for locals to get involved in the Trustpower Marlborough District Community Awards.

Entries for the competition close at 5pm today.Last year, 62 groups were entered, and Mayor

Alistair Sowman is keen to see those numbers sustained.

“The community awards are an important way of recognising those who go above and beyond the usual level of contribution that many people make to their immediate neighbourhood.

“Just by the sheer number of entries we get, I can see it’s really popular, and valued too,” he says.

Although being on the judging panel means he is unable to nominate groups himself, the mayor urged others to do so instead.

Trustpower community relations representative Arielle Monk says although there has been a steady uptake in entries this year, there are still many groups

providing services, activities, support and events in the community who go unrecognised.

“These awards are all about finding those volunteer groups, new and old, and giving them some special attention – whether it’s the local rugby club, your kapa haka tutors or your neighbourhood watch.

“Marlborough has a real gold mine of small, but active, communities, including Picton, Seddon and Renwick, and of course Blenheim too.”

Last year’s group category supreme winner were the volunteers of Garden Marlborough, whose self-resourced and developed asset has economic, rec-reational and hugely aesthetic benefit to the district.

Entry forms are available from council offices and service centres, or they can be completed online on the ‘Trustpower Community’ Facebook page.

The Trustpower Marlborough Community Awards presentation will be celebrated with a function on October 19.

By Glenise DreaverSun deliverer Gavin Hapeta

lives on the Papatuanuku Inde-pendency Trust property over-looking Waikawa Bay.

Gavin is also the board rep-resentative for the trust’s seven residents.

Their home is on a secluded rural property with supported living.

They must take care of their own cooking and cleaning, and help residents integrate into the community and sporting activities.

That includes, for those who are able, participating in Special Olympics activities like playing pool at the Picton RSA.

Wherever possible, they also earn money to be saved for holi-days or purchases of their own.

As well as his Sun round and his trust responsibility, Gavin is one of the residents who enjoys helping staff members manage the trust’s small flock of sheep

among other tasks on the farmlet, and in the summer he works at Fresh Choice supermarket.

Gavin sums up his life in a few words: “Living here is awe-

some!”Trust chairman Dave Baker

says he is proud of what the trust has achieved.

“Our residential manager

Aileen Hurst and our retired manager Lynne Gibson brought this amazing facility to Waikawa in 1994.

“They originally set up the scheme in Auckland with the dream of providing a home for life for the residents. They brought it here and made their dream come true in the face of all sorts of opposition.”

Now, increasing administrative and compliance demands are bringing changes to the trust’s operations, though the trustees are adamant Lynne and Aileen’s “home for life” will remain the cornerstone of their activities.

This means, Dave says, they are looking for a manager with strong administrative, business and managerial skills with, hope-fully, experience in this sector to support the current staff in their work.

“Because we aim that the trust will continue this work, far into the future after we have all gone.”

By Jacob PageThe Marlborough Youth Coun-

cil is calling for nominations for their bi-annual community awards.

The awards recognise 13 to 20-year-olds in the Marlborough community who volunteer their time to worthy organisations and causes.

The Marlborough Youth Coun-cil has been operating since 2000 and is made up of repre-sentatives from all the colleges in Marlborough (Marlborough Boys’ College, Marlborough Girls’ College and Queen Char-lotte College), Community Col-lege and Business Management School.

Their goal is to provide a youth voice on council and community issues and positively raise the region’s view of youth and what

we do.MBC Year 11 pupils Jack Dalton

and George Jackson say young people should be recognised and rewarded for their efforts.

Jack and George both were part of the bike cages at MBC as well as raising funds for school lockers.

Areas recognised include community service/spirit, sport and recreation, art and culture, environment, leadership and mentoring.

Nomination forms can be downloaded from the My Voice Marlborough website or at the Marlborough District Council offices.

Nominations close on Septem-ber 1, but this could be extended, and the awards night will be at the Marlborough Civic Theatre on October 10.

Youth awards open for nominations

MBC pupils and Marlborough Youth Council members George Jackson and Jack Dalton are hopeful of seeing plenty of nominations for the Marlborough Youth Awards which have opened.

After the inaugural event last year the Sweet Az Sun Festival is returning for a second edition early next year, with The Black Seeds the headline act.

The event will be held at Lans-downe Park on Waitangi weekend, Sunday, February 7, with Monday, February 8 being a public holiday.

The Black Seeds are returning to Blenheim after playing this year’s Wine and Food Festival.

They will be joined by Wellington-based band Trinity Roots.

Ex Salmonella-Dub frontman Tiki Taane and drum and bass producer Optimus Gryme are both returning after attending last year’s event.

Other acts include Aidan Quinn-Brereton who, as Kodum, made the shortlist for this year’s Smokefre-

erockquest solo/duo national grand final.

Next year’s event will run until 8pm. Organisers are looking for more stallholders and potentially one more local act to play in the daytime line-up.

The event will feature an expanded kids’ area featuring bungy jumps, climbing walls, bouncy castles, laser tag and face painting, with an R18 bar area set to return.

It is unclear whether the bar area will be fenced off.

Early-bird tickets will be available from August 20 at United Video on Kinross Street.

Organisers are encouraging out-of-towners to stay in Marlborough for the entire long weekend.

They have secured an exclusive

show for UK dance legend Aphro-dite, who will perform with an all star DJ/producer line-up on Friday, February 5 at an R18 Blenheim nightclub.

THE TEST OF T ME

32YEARS

How many years have you been in business? I started fencing 35 years ago. I’ve had my own business for 32 years.

What is it about your line of work that is most satisfying?Seeing a fence finished and knowing that even though its been hard work getting there, it will be standing for a long time.

What are your most memorable highlights?Working on the hill country, the places you get to and the people you meet.

What is it about this region that has kept you here? It’s a great place to be. Great climate if its not blowing too much. Everything is so handy; you can be way up on

some ridgeline in the morning, then down on the beach in the afternoon and we also have excellent fly fishing rivers.

How has the business changed over time? When I started, farm fencing was all we did, mainly hill work. Now we do all types of fencing from paling fences around a house to Waratahs in steep country anywhere in Marlborough, as wells as Vineyard development and maintenance. People expect us to know how to make their ideas work and to do it well.

What words of advice would you give other business in this economic climate? Watch the spending and be adaptable but also enjoy what you do.

It was the age of mobile phones, I needed two hands to lift mine. What is it about your line of work that is most satisfying?I`m never satisfied. To be perfect is impossible so many variables outside my control, weather, markets, people, competition but it`s great to line up the ducks and succeed with your projects. How are you different from other businesses? To survive 26 years when early opposition suggested 12 month would see the end of Kiwi Seed.

What is it about this region that has kept you here?Marlborough is a challenge but it`s a great place to live. Hills, sea, rivers, bush, big enough to be interesting, small enough to live the life, don`t tell Auckland. How has your business changed over time?Land use changes have been massive, it`s affected Kiwi Seed greatly. Today we have a retail, seed cleaning and process plant, market dryland pasture species thoughout NZ and provide seeds to sheep and beef farmers, dairy farmers, vineyards and the home gardener. What words of advice would you give to other businesses in this economic climate?Never stop thinking even at night.

What is it about your line of work that is most satisfying?I get to meet a lot of different people, and every day is different. Sometimes I can be out at the heads in Kenepuru, and then somewhere in Seddon or St Arnaud. I’m here, there and everywhere.

What has been your most memorable highlight over these years?Nothing stands out, but I’ve certainly met a lot of interesting

characters over the years.

What is it about this region that you love the most? The climate. The people. I was born and bred here, and my family is here.

How has business the changed over time?I’ve seen a lot of changes in technology. Communication and ordering of stock has changed, and the technological advancements in our product have been huge.

What words of advice would you give other businesses in this economic climate?Just focus on what you’re doing. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing.

“Your body can do anything. It’s your brain you have to convince!”

This is one of the most important lessons I have been learning during my healthy journey.

It’s also something my coach Jane Butler reiterates each time we meet.

She hears my excuses then finds a way around them, providing a solution so I can keep on track with my goals.

A friend commented on my fortnightly reports recently, pointing out that the best result I could hope for is to feel happier within myself.

I have to agree. When you feel better about yourself you

feel more positive about life in general and don’t slip back into bad habits.

I met with my personal trainer Emma Burrell two weeks ago and had my second monthly weigh in.

She took the same measurements of my body and the results put a big smile

on my faceFirst I stood on the scales and measured

everything from body weight to hydra-tion.

Interestingly those numbers were the same as last month.

When I saw that my heart dropped, but Emma advised not to focus on the scales and wait for the measurements.

Good advice! After measuring chest, waist, hips,

quads and arms I had lost a total of 14cm.This was the best news ever. It showed

me that by focusing on nutrition my weight is decreasing at a healthy rate.

It also showed that the exercise I have been doing, although not huge amounts, is still toning and strengthening muscles.

The whole point of this journey was to show that as a busy working mother with very little spare time, it is still possible to make healthy changes and see the difference.

From ‘I can’... to ‘I do’Sun reporter Celeste Lodewyk’s health journey as she approaches her wedding day.

All Blacks’ bubble burstssports talk

If anyone believed the All Blacks would romp to a first World Cup victory on foreign soil, they certainly don’t now.

The Wallabies’ 27-19 victory in Sydney on Saturday night sent the Rugby Championship trophy across the Tasman, and a reality check to AB fans.

It’s easy to point the finger at public enemy number one Wayne Barnes.

He seemed to take a ‘lenient’ view of the Australian rush de-fence but the result was decided by other factors.

It was clear the Wallabies wanted it.

Their commitment and relentless energy was a testament to that. Dan Carter is the top points-scorer

in international rugby. The Wallabies put him off his

place-kicking by racing up on him, and saved four points by doing so.

Selecting twin openside flank-ers, Michael Hooper and David Pocock, worked for the Wallabies.

They beat the All Blacks at the breakdown, nullifying Richie Mc-Caw and Aaron Smith’s pass. Add that to a powerful Wallaby scrum and they won the forward battle.

The All Black tactics were questionable.

It looks great when it works but having forwards passing at the line requires time, something the Wallabies did not afford them.

There were no short kicks and few high kicks.

Kicking to the corners might have reduced the number of breakdowns, lessening the Hoop-er/Pocock influence.

Ian Jones speculated the All Blacks were ‘foxing,’ keeping aces up their sleeve for the World Cup. With the lack of creativity it’s easy to see how he got that impression.

The rest was individual. Sekope Kepu and Nic White

both broke first-up tackles to score their tries.

The All Blacks have lost three tests in the last four years, so it’s a wake-up call – if they lose at fortress Eden Park tomorrow that’d be more worrying.

It’s just reinforced winning in the UK will be no walk in the park.

Looking for a sport with dancing for your child after school? Why not give march-ing a go!

The Renwick Marching Club have teams that cater for all ages 4 years and over and you do not have to have any experience.

Renwick marching will be holding an open day to-night at 6pm at the Renwick Community Hall next to the school on High Street.

We would like to encourage everyone and anyone big and small to come along and have a look.

If you would like to be involved with the sport in other ways you could be-come a judge, or help out

with running our marching programmes for the youth community.

As a marching club and sport group we are a non-profit organisation that will

be looking for support from the local community for any funding. This funding will help our teams with travel around New Zealand for the competitions and much more.

Blenheim swimmer Sally McMath has begun her busy New Zealand Short Course Championships meet strongly, swimming two personal bests earlier this week.

McMath finished fifth-equal in the 200 metre freestyle event in 2:06.35, shaving 0.4 seconds off her PB.

It was the first of eight events McMath is competing in during the Auckland meet. All of her events are in the women’s 17-18 year-old age group.

Since competing in that event McMath has finished sixth in the 100m backstroke with another PB and ninth in the 200m individual medley, and been disqualified in the 50m butterfly.

McMath is the only Blenheim Swim-ming Club member competing at the meet. She had a day off yesterday, but swims the 200m backstroke, 100m but-terfly, 100m freestyle and 50m backstroke before the meet finishes tomorrow.

Duathlon Entries are still open for the Marlborough Kids’ Duathlon later this year. The event will be held at the Brancott Estate Winery on Sunday, October 18. Visit the Marlborough Kids’ Duathlon website for more information.

The first Tasman Makos team of this year’s ITM Cup season has been named, and it features a strong Marlborough contingent.

Hooker Quentin MacDonald and South African-born tighthead prop Ross Geldenhuys make up two thirds of the front row, and they are joined in the tight five by lock Joe Wheeler.

Geldenhuys and Wheeler were both part of the Highlanders side which won the

Super 15 title earlier in the year. Quentin’s brother Jesse is on the substi-

tutes’ bench, and can expect some game time in the hooker’s jersey.

The Makos kick off their campaign at 6:05pm tonight against Waikato in Hamilton.

They play five home games this season, two in Blenheim and three in Nelson.

In Blenheim they play Manawatu on Au-gust 27 and Auckland on September 20.
