2013-14PARTNERSHIP REPORT

Page 2: 14 39776 svpd academymortgage lores

Celebrating a new partnership: As a defense against the routine of daily life, we find joy in marking milestones and celebrating anniversaries: five years of marriage, 10 years out of high school or college, the first year in a new home. So when Academy Mortgage turned to Habitat for Humanity to help mark its 25th anniversary in the business of serving communities and homeowners, we eagerly joined in the planning process.

What a celebration we’ve had. Together we unveiled a national corporate social responsibility initiative that included a $250,000 donation to Habitat to support team builds across the United States in 2013 and 2014. Academy Mortgage volunteers helped build homes in three states, extending the celebration to communities and families whose lives are enriched by safe, decent, affordable housing.

Although the event we designed for the 25th anniversary was special, we want to celebrate our ongoing relationship. Here’s to making the partnership between Academy Mortgage, Habitat for Humanity and homeowner families a cause for celebration each year for many years to come.

In partnership,

Jonathan T.M. Reckford,CEO, Habitat for Humanity International

Mike Jensen, Academy Mortgage’s executive vice president of marketing and corporate development, and his wife, Barb, visited former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, in Americus, Georgia, at the annual Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Weekend in May 2014.

Academy Mortgage has long supported community activities in Salt Lake City, Utah, the home of its headquarters, and in the 43 states where it is licensed to process loans. The company also has led international service trips to Guatemala and to countries in Africa. In December 2012, company leaders proposed a national corporate social responsibility partnership to Habitat that would fund team builds in several cities where the

It’s nice to have family close by, but eight family members sharing a small space can make things too close for comfort.

Aisha Lowe and her daughters Josie, 14, and Tayli, 3, were sharing a cramped three-bedroom, one-bathroom home with five other family members when Lowe, a preschool teacher in Atlanta, determined everyone needed more elbow room.

The entire family put in 250 hours of sweat equity working on Lowe’s new Habi-tat house, which was sponsored entirely by Academy Mortgage. They also put in 50 hours on other Habitat families' homes.

Now that they’ve settled into their new home, Tayli can practice her gymnastics

Executive summarycompany has field offices.

It set an ambitious goal of contributing 25,000 volunteer hours to Habitat for Humanity – 1,000 hours for each of its years in business. Teams from the corporate office, along with field offices in Arizona, Georgia and Utah, began building in 2013, and Academy employees are continuing their efforts in 2014.

This report shares a few examples of how those volunteer hours helped

transform lives — of volunteers and homeowners alike. We present it with gratitude for Academy Mortgage’s tremendous support. Thank you for selecting Habitat for Humanity to recognize your company’s first 25 years in business and for your commitment to the communities you serve. We look forward to celebrating with you and homeowner families for the next 25 years.

at home and Josie can concentrate on her life as a high school student, which includes track and basketball. In addi-tion, Lowe has the quiet and the privacy she was hoping for so she can catch up on her reading.

Lowe says homeownership will motivate her to pursue higher goals for herself and set a strong example of hard work and accomplishment for her daughters to follow.

“The most exciting thing for me,” she said, “was finishing the build and moving in. It means I am moving closer to my goals. Thank you!”

ROOM TO GROW

In Atlanta, district manager Kelly Allison (left) and her team generously donated their Saturdays to spend a few months building alongside homeowner Aisha Lowe. Tripp Johnson (center) and David Karamitros of the Atlanta branch joined Allison on the build.

Crowding wasn’t the problem at Isabel Duran’s house in Chandler, Arizona. The problem was the house itself: It was falling apart around her.

Duran, in her 70s and retired, had lived in her house for more than 40 years. The roof leaked so much that mold grew in the home. The house lacked a founda-tion or slab, and she could see the ground through the many fractures in her floor-ing. Light, heat and cold streamed through cracks in the uninsulated walls. The only solution was to knock it down and build afresh, starting with a concrete slab.

Organized and coordinated by loan of-ficer David Kester, 80 Academy Mortgage

volunteers were instrumental in the build, contributing 819 hours of hard work in cold weather. Kester looked after every detail, including fundraising and making sure volunteers were fed lunch every day.

Despite having a disability, Duran strapped on a nail apron and put in her share of work on the job, too.

A reconstructed home means a more fulfilling life for Duran. Now she can invite family and friends to visit without feeling embarrassed, and the family can continue the Christmastime tradition of spending two full days mak-ing tamales together.

FROM THE GROUND UP

Volunteers from several branches and the corporate office worked on two Habitat homes in Arizona. Employees from the Chandler branch worked to reconstruct a home that had fallen into disrepair, so that Isabel Duran (right), pictured here with her daughter Victoria, could live safely and comfortably. Regional manager Chad Melin and loan officer David Kester led the efforts and coordinated the volunteers. All employees of the branch, their families, and some referral partners generously gave of their time.

Angelina Chavez knew she needed to get herself and her 91-year-old mother, Della Showell, out of their apartment in a dangerous part of Salt Lake City.

When the call came, Academy Mort-gage employees answered to the tune of 250 volunteer hours to help build Chavez and Showell’s new home in a safer neigh-borhood in the area of town known as Magna. Angelina was always there to work alongside volunteers, bringing her sunny smile and positive attitude to the job site. Academy Mortgage teammates say Chavez

left an impression on them.In exchange for her 225 hours of

sweat equity and monthly mortgage payments, Chavez gets safety, stability, improved self-worth and peace of mind. The single-story home is perfect for Della, who can’t climb stairs anymore. The fully landscaped yard is surrounded by a sturdy fence. The women look forward to hosting family cookouts, card games and visits from children and grandchildren. Life is good near the Great Salt Lake.

A SAFE PLACE

In Magna, Hill Field branch manager Brett Mills said he was grateful to be able “to gather with great professionals in the industry where we could unitedly give back in a small way.” Academy Mortgage teams built two homes with Habitat in Utah.
