Young Adults and Health Insurance: NotInvincible But Perhaps Convincible
[Findings from the Deloitte 2014 Survey of Young Adults and Health Insurance]
Held Their Breath When state and federal health
insurance exchanges rolled out, health plans and
policymakers held their breath to see whether young
people would sign up. Their participation could be
key to balancing the older, sicker population whose
expensive medical needs stood to burden new risk
pools. In the end, 28 percent of ACA enrollees were
from the critical 18-to-34-year-old cohort.
Risk Taking? Its popular to categorize this
demographic as healthy, risk-taking young invincibles,
but a Deloitte survey of 500 young adults (age 19-34)
from April 2014 tells a different story:
Reasons For Not Signing Up Among the young
adults who didnt sign up for coverage, fewer than one
in ve said it was because they dont expect to need
insurance. But two-thirds said they just couldnt afford
it. More than half never even visited a state or federal
exchange site.
Reasons For Signing Up Those who did get
insurance said the most important reasons were to paymedical bills, to secure peace of mind and to avoid
paying the federal penalty.
Unaware Half of those who signed up said Med-
icaid or subsidies were an important part of that de-
cision but more than half of all respondents (those
who signed up and those who did not) remain unaware
that the federal government can help them pay for in-
surance, or that they can stay on their parents policies
until age 26. ###

Hi Neighbor.
Now Or Later? If you already received yourVote-by-Mail ballot (and/or havent voted yet),or if you plan to vote later at the polls, Id liketo share my experience with you.
Your Precinct 4178 Ballot If you are
registered in Precinct 4178 as Other, youhave these 2 choices:
Circuit Judge, Group 14 Diana Lewis Jessica TicktinCircuit Judge, Group 30 Maxine Cheeseman Jamie Goodman Peggy Rowe-Linn
If you are registered in Precinct 4178 as
Democrat, you have these 2 additional choices:Governor Charlie Crist Nan H. RichAttorney General George Sheldon Perry E. Thurston
Editors Choice During the campaign seasonIve been fortunate enough to meet, listen toand question every one of the candidates on
your ballot.
For Governor, I pick Charlie Crist. Eithercandidate would make a fine governor. Eitherone would be a welcome change from our present
governor. However, Nan Rich does not have thefunds, name recognition, or charisma to win inthe November election.
For Attorney General, I pick George SheldonAgain, either candidate would make a fineattorney general. Both have had much experiencein many areas of government, however GeorgeSheldons credentials and experience are themore extensive of the two.
For Circuit Judge, Group 14, I find it a
toss up. The incumbent Judge Lewis judiciademeanor leaves much to be desired and manyof her decisions have been overturned inhigher courts. Jessica Ticktin has much lessexperience. I have a tendency to vote for theless experienced than the proven intemperateSo Ill vote for Jessica Ticktin.
For Circuit Judge Group 30, I pick JamieGoodman. He is a constitutional law studentand has judicial temperament.
For Precinct 4178 Voters

Dear Friends, Family, Colleagues,
Fellow Activists, Democrats, andIndependent Voters,
Many of you know how deeply involvedI've been for the past 3 years in
publishing, creating, and editing this importanmonthly Voter Education journal whose ultimategoal is to reduce election-time nagging. [Tosee the archives of previous issues of The VoterPublications, go to: http://goo.gl/QzReEy.]
Please join me and my team in taking our concern
to its next logical step: to complete a Beta-Testedmodel which shows that voter education is a betteway to encourage voters to vote than nagging.
Our Beta Test has already borne fruit. In the March2014 Boca Raton Municipal Election the voterturnout in our Precinct 4178 showed a 33% largeturnout than in the average of all other Precinctsin Boca Raton! Congratulations!
We would like to complete our Beta Test throughthe August Primary and the November GeneraElection to see what turnout a whole years worth
of education produces. But we no longer have the resources to print andmail until November. Please help us complete ouTest.
Please go to our GoGetFunding site to contribute

or use this link: http://goo.gl/yZ0Rdr
Thanks for your interest!

WHICH OF THESE DO REPUBLICANS STAND FOR?
Maps Drawn Illegally State Judge TerryLewis ordered Florida to redraw its congressionaldistricts July 10 after he found them to begerrymandered. His ruling was made as he foundtwo districts were drawn in a partisan manner thatviolated the state constitution.
Unnecessarily Gerrymandered Lewis saidthe two districts were unnecessarily gerryman-dered to put more African-American voters thannecessary into Congressional District 5, repre-sented by Democratic Congresswoman CorrineBrown, to keep those Democratic-leaning votersout of surrounding districts. District 5 is meant toprovide black voters with an opportunity to elect acandidate of their choice.
The judge also found fault with CongressionalDistrict 10, currently held by RepublicanCongressman Dan Webster, because of anappendage of white voters added to the Orlando-area district.
Conspiracy In his opinion, the state judgewrote that he found Republican political consul-
tants or operatives did in fact conspire to manipu-
late and inuence the redistricting process.
Intentional The grounds for nding aws in
the two districts were different. Lewis found the
5th Congressional District was intentionally drawnto pack as many Democratic voters as possible
in order to improve Republican performance in
neighboring districts. In contrast, the 10th, while
originally drawn in accordance with the states
laws, was modied late in the process for partisan
advantage.
Judge Lewis order will not affect Palm Beach
County Districts in our 2014 elections.
Although Lewis specically invalidated only twodistricts, redrawing those lines would cause a
ripple effect that could change the boundaries for
several other districts as well.
The State Legislature is currently revising its maps
Stay tuned.
