From The President

The day after the night before

Rotarians, 1 July 2014

I’m writing to tell you about the state of the Club on the first day of the Rotary Year. It is no different than it was yesterday — in the last Rotary Year.

President Mike left a fine legacy of Club leadership. At Charter Night he provided a comprehensive account of an

active Club — so active that I didn’t recognise it myself!

The Members are enthusiastic and as supportive as ever — a credit to any Club. A joy to depend on.

Brian Boumphrey and the Social Committee excelled in producing a fine venue and a very humorous speaker, Frank Rogers. He tickled my wife but that is another story. The District Governor almost suffered a hernia laughing but he could not understand the joke about a 12" penis. Volunteers please.......

The highlight of the evening was the presentation, by the District Governor to Barbara Sinclair, on behalf of the Interact Club of Hilbre, of the Presidential Citation. This was awarded to the Club for achieving specified objectives in the last twelve months. The presentation recognised their Community Project to eliminate litter in their area thus helping conserve wildlife. Models and a film have been made of and concerning litter. The models will be displayed in the Hospitality tent at the Hoylake Open Golf Championship, and the film shown in the Lighthouse cinema. The Citation will be presented at a School Assembly when the new term starts in September. The Assembly will be used to promote the Interact Club and Rotary links together with their places in the Community. A Club visit by the model and film makers will be made at a later date. The whole Club must be very pleased with the success demonstrated by Youth Services.

Finally, International and Foundation have started to plan an ambitious international Club link to add to their already extensive international activity.

Engagement and activity is the answer to Club vitality and growth. At day one of this year it looks to me like a Club that I should love to join! Active and great FUN. If you want to rejoin pay your subscription at the earliest possible opportunity — £125 — a bargain!

Your friend and President,

We are grateful to David Hulme for a comprehensive analysis of the registration slips from the Walk. Key findings are:

Almost 2,100 slips were received (about 800 less than in 2013). However, the data within them proved limited: Only 39% declared both Charity supported and an amount expected to be raised. 28% of slips recorded neither and 27% recorded a Charity but no amount. 6% recorded money raised but no beneficiary. Clearly a bit more persuasion required at Registration Desks to improve the information!

Some Charities lost a significant number of walkers this year with over 56% of the 800 reduction coming from just eight Charities. Others gained with six Charities generating over 130 more walkers than last year. The spread of Charities supported remains encouraging with 273 benefiting this year.

A majority of walkers (54%) obtained their registration forms from the website this year, the balance being distributed via CVS.

One of the reasons for reduced numbers was rival events - The Secret Gardens in Oxton and the Port Sunlight 10k/5k run (Plus kids’ 1k and follow on events) were particularly felt to have drawn supporters away....... not to mention a Liverpool FC match!

One of the challenges when setting the date this year was there being only two weekends between the two May bank holidays - which is bound to concentrate rival events. The same applies in 2015. The Committee is looking at a later date altogether for next year but are not publishing either the short list of dates or the preferred date until the selection is finalised. This will be made after consideration of tide times and other Charity events.

Mike Morris and his Committee are also pursuing a number of other thoughts on how to improve the appeal, publicity, registration process etc of the Coastal Walk - work in progress! Ed

I only received one submission of biscuits in response to last month’s quiz set by President John - but Ron Warne achieved the required number to receive the prize. I said it would involve some thought – it was a page in this issue in which to write anything of interest – however he has not responded to the opportunity as yet! To save you looking up the questions I am putting the answers and questions together:

1 A joking Welshman’s name and rumbling system. Digestive2 A drink favoured by well lined Unilever pensioners well known in

the Club. Rich Tea3 A dress favoured by David Cheyne as Toastmaster. Penguin4 Peter Unsworth could save you money with this ( - who is he?). Taxi5 This whisky will be bought by the President for the first member

who introduces a new member next year. Bourbon6 This coveted award is colourful and was worn by Gwynn Jones at

the West Kirby Eisteddfod. Blue Ribband7 Ladies with this colour hair give Eric Morton a flutter in his heart

– not the horses. Ginger Nut8 This contains people who give Len Cantliffe a pain in the butt –

not a pretty sight. Club9 “Lets have a break” called Jill Prasad from the back – soon! Kit-Kat10 The name reminds me of “frozen diamonds” says the cryptic Brian

Jones. Iced Gems11 Elite idiots who attend District eat these. Cream Crackers12 Found on top of an Aga at Chateau Denis Blamey in Caldy. Hob Nobs13 Will give you sweet dreams – this doesn’t mean Rex Andrew’s

Bulletin. Malted Milk14 Half a loaf is all that Len Kirkham and Brian Masheter should be

having. Shortbread15 It is rumoured that Harold Bowman’s birthday was during this

monarch’s reign. Victoria16 This drink bites and is not favoured by Brian Boumphrey. Brandy Snap17 Lucky people get out of the way when the Vice-President

nomination is sought. Jammy Dodgers18 Drink before lunch except when you are Alan Hanson in Australia. Morning

Coffee19 “Snap Off!” - we all heard the shout from Brian Clark. Break Away20 This was a popular holiday resort made famous by Stuart

Osborne. Nice21 A man no longer with “glitter” attached, but with a reflective dome

like Jim Drake and Ken Smail. Garibaldi

And to Richard T for this one: Hot Air Balloon encounterA man in a hot air balloon realized he was lost. He reduced altitude and spotted a woman below. He descended a bit more and shouted, "Excuse me, can you help? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am "

The woman below replied, "You are in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground. You are between 40 and 41 degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude."

You must be an engineer," said the balloonist.

"I am," replied the woman, "How did you know?"

"Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of your information, and the fact is I am still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help so far."

The woman below responded, "You must be in Management."

"I am," replied the balloonist. "but how did you know?"

(continued from P7) "Well," said the woman, "you don't know where you are or where you are going. You have risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise which you have no idea how to keep, and you expect people beneath you to solve your problems. The fact is you are in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but now, somehow, it's my fault."

The Editor’s Bit So we’ve started another Rotary year - there’s not space (without giving you another 4 pages - which seems a bit much) on the plans for the year. Perhaps next month for a short version of those!

Please remember that copy is always welcome - especially reports on what we as a Club and our Sister Clubs get up to.

Planned publication dates for the next two issues are 4th August and 1st September – copy dates 30th July and 27th August please. Rex
