Shanghai Warehouse detection codeThe new Shanghai code mandates Very EarlyWarning Aspirated Smoke Detection systems to beused within large logistic warehouses in Shanghai.

The code effects all consumer and commerical logisticwarehouse ranging from fresh, frozen and packagedfoods through to industrial products such asautomotive parts, paint, paper, textiles and informationtechnology equipment are some examples of highvalue and often highly flammable stock that occupylogistic warehouses.

The riskBusiness continuity must be protected becauseproducts going in and out with high value and fastturnover results in high value and occupancy ofproducts. With expected turnaround and theconsequential loss caused by downtime very high, aninterruption will not only effect the logistic supply chainbut your business reputation. Telling your customersthat their goods have gone up in smoke or that youcant supply them for several months could be the endof your business.

Even if your warehouse does not contain flammablegoods, the risk is still large. Packing materials such asplastics, cardboard, wooden crates and pallets arecommon in warehouses. The possible ignition sourcesuch as smoking, electrical lighting and equipment, heaters and the storage of hazardous goods creates arisk that must be managed.

Fire will interrupt the operation and the supply chain.Even a small fire will contaminate the environmentwith smoke and turned stored goods into scrap.

A plastics warehouse burnt to the ground inWilton, UK, resulting in US$14 million in stockloss. The probable cause? A fluroescent lightfitting failed and dripped molten acrylic ontostorage1.

Fig 1 - Fire Growth Curve

The progression of fire growth over time. A VESDA detector can reliably detect

a warehouse fire at the incipient stage and avoid the incidence of damage andloss. The detector can be configured to generate multiple alarms during theearliest stage of a fire.

The VESDA AdvantageVESDA - the worlds leading aspirating smokedetection system - provides the optimum protectionagainst fire by reliably detecting the presence ofsmoke at the earliest possible stage (refer to Figure 1).

Despite the key environmental challenges of awarehouse environment, VESDAs advanced smokedetection technology overcomes the difficultiesassociated with conventional detection systems.

VESDAs early warning, aspirating smoke detectioncumulatively samples air via multiple sampling holesin a pipe network and transports the air sample to acentrally located detector for accurate analysis (referto Figure 2).

Why do warehouses need a differentapproach to smoke detection?Since large logistics warehouses with high ceilingspose a challenge to fire safety system design, aperformance-based fire safety design approach isadopted to ensure that all protection requirements willbe met. The key benefits of the VESDA system are:

High sensitivity - warehouses contain large volumesof air and smoke is easily diluted making it difficultto detect.

Reliability - lower on-going maintenance and

replacement costs. Very early fire detection - meeting fire safety design

    objectives.

    Cost-effective system design - value-engineeredand fit-for-purpose.

Flexibility - accommodating future floor planchanges.

    Design flexibility to suit all

    warehouses

VESDA can be used to detect smoke on the ceilingand within the storage racks for facilities with highceilings.

The detector can be positioned in an easily accessible

location where programming and maintenance of thedetector can be performed without disruptingwarehouse operation.

Using a pipe network with multiple sampling holes andmulti-level sampling overcomes the issue of smokestratification by using drop pipes (refer to Figure X) orsampling out specific locations of the warehouse.

    On ceiling detection

    In-rack sampling

    For warehouses that contain

high-bay racking, samplingpipe can be located withinthe racking to overcomestratification or detection ofsmall fires. VESDA detectorscan also be installed in-rackfor pre-action sprinkleractuation.

Why use a VESDA system? When selecting an aspirating smoke detection system for a warehouse, consider:

Look for Why? What VESDA offers

The best sensitivity To get the earliest possible warning of a fire VESDA can alarm at 0.005 % (obs/m)

A wide sensitivity range So that detection levels can be set to suit theenvironment, avoiding false alarms

    VESDA detectors have a sensitivity range of0.005 - 20% obs/m

    A redundant peer-to-peer communicationsnetwork

To give you flexibility in positioning andprogramming detectors and display modules

The VESDAnet communication network allowsyou complete installation flexibility

Nusiance alarm rejection For reliable performance in the presence ofdust and other nuisance alarm sources

VESDA detectors have a filtration system toremove particulate matter that could causefalse alarms.

Multiple programmable alarm thresholds So that the response can be appropriate forthe stage of the fire, from Investigate at thefirst alarm through to Start the sprinkers atthe fourth alarm level

VESDA has 4 programmable alarm levels, allowing a response appropriate for the threat.

Event log and reporting A forensic tool for investigating faults, alarms, user actions and smoke trends

Each VESDA detector has an event log thatstores the last 18000 events

A wide product range You can choose the product that is right forthe area size you wish to protect.

VESDA has the widest product range on themarket

Absolute calibration Ensures repeatable and reliable detection ofvery slow growth incipient fires

VESDA is the only aspirating smoke detectorwith Absolute calibration
