Camp SunshineCamp Sunshine, located on the pristine shores of Sebago Lake, is a national non-profit retreat for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. The award winning

program offers an abundance of indoor and outdoor recreation, and the comfort of an on-site doctor, 24 hours a day. The family-focused program is unique, in that it serves families during disease specific sessions, through-out the entire year. Thanks to the support of thousands of volunteers and generous donors like Downeast Energy, the program continues to be offered cost-free to participating families, since its inception in 1984.

Camp Sunshine’s programs offer families the rare opportunity to engage in therapeutic recreation and psychosocial counseling in a supportive environment where they don’t feel alone, and don’t have to explain, since all families

know exactly how each other feels. Families leave Camp Sunshine with hope, not hopelessness; and better prepared to face their uncertain futures.

The one-of-a-kind program attracts families from around the nation - and world; however, most of the families come from Maine and New England, and the Eastern Seaboard states. Last year, Camp Sunshine hosted over 720 families from 44 states and 8 different countries. Of course, Maine families always remain their priority.

Product SpotlightSystem 2000Now you can upgrade your existing water heater and boiler, furnace or heat pump to a single high efficiency system engineered to deliver high performance and exceptional fuel efficiency and economy. System 2000 combines heat and hot water with a single high efficiency appliance to maximize efficiency in all seasons, with the additional benefits of virtually unlimited hot water and whisper quiet operation. Unlike traditional boilers, the System 2000 by Energy Kinetics conserves energy by running only when you need heat or hot water. And, the System 2000 runs a Hybrid Energy Recovery cycle to recover as much heat as possible from the water left in the boiler each time it fires up.

System 2000 is designed for use with conventional heat and hot water systems for homes, buildings, pools, spas, snow melt systems and more. It’s also fuel neutral and runs on propane and fuel oil.

In addition to being efficient and fuel neutral, System 2000 leads the indus-try in noise control with Whisper Quiet technology. The spiral boiler design and heavy insulation is an extremely effective noise dampening system. Homeowners often compliment System 2000’s industry leading design by asking to hear the boiler run on the day of a new install…only to find out that it was already running! Now that’s quiet!

Earth Day april 22, 2013

With ever more frequent hurricanes, blizzards and more, many are considering home standby generators. Here are answers to a number of frequently asked questions about generators fueled by propane.

why propane?Propane is a stable product that will not degrade over time. Unlike diesel fuel and gasoline which can go bad after just a few months, propane has an indefinite shelf life inside your tank. All generators designed for natural gas can also operate on propane.

where can it go?Both generators and propane tanks have location requirements which must meet code. The propane tanks must be 10’ away from the generator and any other source of igni tion (AC condensers, electric outlets, vents, etc.) and 3’ away from a door or window. Most generator manufac-turers and some states now require 5’ of clearance from the home to the generator.

How does it get installed?Downeast Energy works with vendors across our service area who offer a variety of generator models and sizes.

These partners perform the generator installation and electrical work, while Downeast Energy provides the pro-pane portion of the work and tank set.

How much will it cost?Pricing will vary depending upon the location, code and permitting requirements of your installation. A good rule of thumb is to budget $500-$600 per kilowatt (kw) of generator you plan to install. For example, a 15kw generator will generally cost $7-8,000 installed.

How much propane will it use?Generator consumption varies with the size of the unit and elec trical load. A smaller generator (5kw) may use 1.5 gallons per hour but a large unit (20kw) may use 3 gallons. Downeast Energy requires 5 days worth of run-time storage. We often use 120 gallon tanks for a generator. These tanks measure 30” wide and 4’ tall. Larger tanks may be used based on other propane appliances, as well as our ability to reach your home and deliver during a power outage. While a generator is a convenience, try to con serve fuel and electricity during an emergency as it may take several days for your home to become accessible to our delivery trucks.

This Earth Day, you can take comfort in knowing that Propane has one of the lowest carbon foot prints and greenhouse gas emissions among traditional fuels. Propane when compared to other fuels measures quite well. Versus:

• A fuel oil furnace, Propane has 96% fewer sulfur (SO2) emissions

• An electric water heater, Propane has 52% lower greenhouse gas emissions, when factoring the pro-duction of electricity from a fossil fueled power plant

• A gasoline engine, Propane emits 20% less Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) and 60% less Carbon Monoxide (CO)

• A diesel engine, Propane produces 50% fewer particulate emissions

• Your charcoal fired grill, Propane emits only 1/3rd the amount of carbon dioxide in your backyard

Also note that Propane before combustion is also non-toxic and not harmful to the environment. If released, Propane biodegrades into the air or if underground, into the soil and does not pollute groundwater or act as a greenhouse gas.
