There is but “one Lord, one faith, one
baptism, one God and Father of all”
(Eph 4:5-6)
Congratulations! We recently welcomed the following child into the Catholic community of faith at St. Thomas More.
OLIVA ISABEL QUEZADA
May our community embrace her and may our word and example be a reflection of God’s love for her. Let us offer our joy-filled prayers and congratulations as a sign of our support and welcome!
NEXT SUNDAY’S
LITURGY
THE MOST HOLY
TRINITY
THE RESPONSIBILITY OF OUR FAITH Today is a day simply to ponder the fact that in baptism we were claimed by God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The first reading from Deuteronomy prompts us to fix in our hearts the truth that God is the Lord of both heaven and earth and there is no other god. Saint Paul reminds us that, because we received the Spirit of adoption in baptism, we are now children of God. In the Gospel Jesus charges us with the responsibility to make other disciples. These realities make today’s solemnity a day of praise, adoration, and responsibility. It is a fitting day to thank God for the absolutely free gift of faith that we were given in baptism. It is also a day to ask God for strength to take on the responsibility of sharing that faith with others.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The Lord is God in the heavens above and on earth below and there is no other (Deuteronomy 4:32-34, 39-40). Psalm — Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own (Psalm 33). Second Reading — You received a Spirit of adoption, through whom we cry, “Abba, Father!” (Romans 8:14-17) Gospel — Baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:16-20).

Our parish community congratulates
JESUS and NAOMI (CONVAL) CRUZ
who recently celebrated the sacrament of Matrimony. We as a parish pledge our support and prayers as they grow with us in living out this important sacrament of commitment.
Dear Friends,
Among the qualities we admire most in others is FIDELITY. Hopefully, fidelity is to be admired and found in ourselves as well. I think one of the reasons we admire fidelity is that it has become an increasingly rare commodity in today’s society. It seems that today, more than ever before, our lives can be filled with superficial encounters of the briefest kind. We keep vows, promises, and pledges as long as we find it convenient.
What is “fidelity?” Simply put, fidelity is a virtue of character by which we keep our word in the face of danger and personal loss. Our word cannot be binding only when things suit us or work to our advantage. As husbands, wives, priests, deacons, physicians, nurses, dentists, teachers, students and baptized faithful, we make various pledges and vows that should weigh heavily on us. But what happens when new obligations and even misfortunes come our way? What happens then?
Today, the Church concludes the Easter Season with the celebration of Pentecost. Pentecost means many things to many people, but above all else it is a powerful example of the fidelity of Jesus. In chapter fourteen of John’s gospel, Jesus promises, “I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.” Today is the day Jesus promised. Today, we celebrate the wind and the fire of God’s spirit and truth. Never have wind and fire been more mysterious than they are on Pentecost. They change simple and frightened fishermen into fearless evangelizers. In a single generation, the disciples of Jesus transform an obscure Jewish sect into a world-embracing religious movement. We, too, can believe and trust in the fidelity of Jesus to his mission of proclaiming God’s kingdom.
On this Pentecost, we must ask ourselves and our community some very profound questions: How do we witness that Jesus is Lord? Are we “bold in our proclamation” and even bolder in working for justice and peace and forgiveness among individuals and communities? We cannot afford to be laid back. In a world which so desperately needs God’s spirit and truth, let’s get about the work of Pentecost.
There are a lot of false flames out there seeking to light up our lives, but they will only eventually consume us and leave us dead and cold. The flame of God’s spirit, however, does not consume us, but instead transforms us into the likeness of the Risen One who promised, “I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.”

All youth ministries now will come under Steven’s direction who along with his wife Amanda will continue to serve the spiritual needs of our youth. Thank you, Steven and Amanda.
Prayerful congratulations to Bishop George Leo Thomas who was installed as the third bishop of the Diocese of Las Vegas last Tuesday, May 15. God’s blessings as he begins his episcopal ministry in our diocese. And our gratitude to retiring Bishop Joseph Pepe who pastored our diocese these past eighteen years. We wish him health and happiness.
May God bless all of us and our families.

What is as old as Christianity
brings joy and peace to those who
practice it, and is the “best kept
secret” in the Church today?
The answer is
Christian Meditation
In an age of rush and noise it is essential that we find time to be still and quiet. “Be still and know that I am God”, says the Psalmist. In this prayer of silence called Christian Meditation we find God who dwells within our heart. And in finding him we find also our true selves, and thus are renewed. Christian Meditation is the natural progression of our prayer life towards a deeper experience of God. Join our STM Meditation group Thursdays in the Chapel at 6:30 PM. You are always welcome.

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER
UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE
May 20, 2018 Pentecost Sunday
Today we celebrate the "birthday of the Church!" Pentecost is described in the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles. But before the great driving wind and tongues of fire empowering the Disciples, the Holy Spirit had already arrived. The Gospel for today's Mass during the day is from John 20. Jesus appears to the fearful disciples after his resurrection. He first speaks a message of calm. "Peace be with you." The apostles "rejoiced when they saw the Lord." When the enthusiastic response settles down, Jesus "breathed on them and said to them 'Receive the Holy Spirit.'"
This action is Trinitarian, and it has happened before. If you turn your Bible back to the beginning, you'll read: "The Lord God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so many became a living being" (Genesis 2:7). In the Garden of Eden, we see God's first, original covenant with man. The breath of life signifies that original indwelling of grace, the special state of likeness and friendship with God before the Fall. Here now, in this locked room, the Apostles receive the long-awaited promise: the very breath of God, n e w l i f e , a n e w c o v e n a n t . In the pairing of these two readings--the Pentecost experience in Acts and the breath of Jesus in John's Gospel --we see that the coming of the Holy Spirit is not only an empowering, it is an indwelling. We have each received the breath of grace in our baptism. It is confirmed, strengthened, and deepened in each reception of the sacraments. If we persevere in virtue, the Spirit of God is alive in us, inspiring our actions of love. This Pentecost Sunday, how is the breath of God alive in you?

STM CATECHUMENATE Inquiry Session
Monday May 21st 7PM
Have you been thinking about becoming Catholic? Or perhaps you
are simply interested in learning more about Catholic beliefs and practices? Do you need more time to discern your initial decision to explore what the Catholic Church offers?
St. Thomas More Catholic Community cordially invites you to the initial meetings for “Inquirers” on the second and fourth Mondays of the month. The next Inquiry session will be Monday,
May 21st, at 7:00 PM in the Chapel.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN JOINING ONE OF OUR STM MINISTRIES OR
ORGANIZATIONS?
Everyone is encouraged and invited to take an active part in the “life” of
St. Thomas More Catholic Community. Through our involvement, we not only enhance our own individual lives, but also help to develop the “community” aspect of our parish. Periodically we have special recruiting times after Masses to invite people to join a ministry and/or organization. In between these times please feel free to call any of our contact people listed in the bulletin each week. They will be happy to answer
any questions you might have, schedule you for ministry training, or add your name to the roster of an organization. All are welcome so please feel free to call.
MINISTRY TO THE HOMEBOUND
Our parish is in need of additional volunteers to take Communion to those who are homebound due to illness,
age, or disability. This ministry of visitation and care is vital to help the homebound participate in the Eucharist and to remain connected to the parish community. Those who bring Communion also bring a friendly face, news of the parish, a concerned listener and often a personal care and compassion that translates into the visible presence of Christ.
If you would be willing to give some time for this ministry, please call the Coordinator of Homebound Ministry, Patti Sabo (702-269-3110) or the parish office (702-361-3022).
A PRAYERFUL INVITATION
Looking for some peaceful, quiet time with the Lord?
The chapel is open from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM Monday through
Thursday and Friday from 8:00 AM to 12 noon. Votive candles are available.

CHILDREN’S CORNER
GROWING WITH THE GOSPEL
Sharing the Gospel One day one of your best friends may move away, and you won't see him every day. You can still stay close to your friend by talking on the phone, writing letters, or sending e-mail messages. Jesus knew he would be leaving. He would not see his friends every day. Jesus promised to send his Spirit to them. When they were confused, the Spirit would show them the truth. When they missed him, Jesus would send them messages by the Holy Spirit. Through the Spirit, Jesus could always stay close to his friends.
Prayer
God, thank you for sending your Spirit so I can stay close to Jesus, too.
Mission for the Week
Before you sit down to read a Bible story, ask God to send his Spirit to help you. When you listen
carefully to God's word, the Spirit can send you a special message from Jesus!

Tips for Summer Camp Safety
Summer is here. School is out, and a whole host of new opportunities for recreation and relaxation await. Maybe you are sending your children to a music or sports camp. Or maybe they have been invited by their friends to go camping in the mountains or at the beach. Whatever the situation, it is important to remember that parents still have the responsibility of controlling access that new people will have to their children. If your children are attending a summer camp, insist that every counselor or anyone else who might have access to your children has undergone an application process that includes a criminal background check and reference checks.
