Continued from front page… 130 attend Kulin’s Methamphetamine Drug Awareness
Fresh Start Recovery Programme (FSRP) representatives Suzanne Wilkins, Noel Dowsett – House Supervisor and Gary Anderson (Mental Health Nurse) and two FSRP patients delivered an informative presentation on methamphetamine addiction and recovery in Kulin recently. An impressive 130 strong crowd gathered at the Freebarin Recreation Centre on Thursday August 20, to learn more about the effects of methamphetamine and hear the real life stories of two recovering addicts. The presentation covered topics ranging from ‘What is ICE?’ to ‘How do I look after myself when dealing with a friend or family member who is an addict?’. Participants were encouraged to engage in an open and frank Q & A session, where no question was off limits. Some key messages from the session were: Support addicts in receiving and accessing
recovery where possible - try not to alienate them Make it hard for dealers to live in your community Share your story with friends and family - don’t
suffer alone Suzanne Wilkins (FSRP) said she was impressed with the community response to the event and encouraged by Kulin’s proactive stance on raising drug awareness in the region. Suzanne welcomes future inquiries from participants wanting to find out more about the FSRP. The following information is taken from the FSRP presentation: FSRP grew out of a commitment to help drug users and
their families recover from drug dependence. We
concentrate on detox, relapse prevention treatment and
developing a drug-free lifestyle.

Libraries play an important
community role in bridging the
digital divide, by improving
opportunities for Australians to
access and learn about the
benefits of technology –
irrespective of income or
ability.
The Telstra Foundation has
partnered with The Alannah
and Madeline Foundation,
investing $8 million over six
years to develop and
implement eSmart Libraries -
one of the most significant
community cybersafety
initiatives ever undertaken in Australia.
More than 40 per cent of Australia’s public libraries are
currently participating in eSmart – with branches in
metropolitan, regional and remote areas of Western
Australia and more joining every week.
Wanneroo Library Service is currently heading toward
their eSmart accreditation.
“The rapid growth of the internet and digital technology
presents many benefits, risks and challenges. Experienced
users and new users use the internet to connect, learn
and communicate, but they may also encounter many
risks due to the often anonymous, complex and multi-
layered nature of the internet.
“The Wanneroo Library Service provides access to online
resources and services, and plays an important role in
ensuring that members of our community who do not
have access to these services at home are not
disadvantaged,” said City of Wanneroo, Mayor, Tracey
Roberts.
Many libraries have found that the eSmart Libraries
Framework fits perfectly with local government library
strategy and helps to positively respond to the digital shift.
“With libraries becoming much more technology focused,
it is more important now than ever to become an eSmart
Library. It has encouraged us to revisit the way we do
things and look for improvements that will be beneficial to
the staff and community,” said Kimberley Higgins, eSmart
Coordinator, Albany Public Library.
The eSmart accreditation process takes each library
between 6 to 24 months to complete and can be paused
and progressed again at any time. Across Australia 626
public library branches are now participating in the
program, with the aim to reach 100% of public libraries by
2018.
Australian Library and Information Association Executive
Director Sue McKerracher said ALIA was in full support of
the program.
“It fits so well with libraries being essential community
resources - physical and online spaces for people to share
knowledge and ideas,” Ms McKerracher said. “The
internet has opened so many new doors for library
professionals to help library users discover inspiration and
information at their fingertips.”
eSmart Libraries will help build skills, change behaviours
and contribute to a greater sense of wellbeing in the
community by facilitating digital inclusion and
empowering good digital citizenship.

Federal Member for O’Connor Rick Wilson MP has
welcomed the launch of an innovative new mobile app to
encourage parents to get more involved in their children’s
education.
Mr Wilson said parents and students right across the state
would benefit from the Learning Potential app.
“The Learning Potential app, which is available for free on
Android and Apple devices, makes it easier for parents and
carers to be part of their child’s learning, and will help get
the most out of the time they spend with their child,” Mr
Wilson said.
“The app is packed full of helpful articles and videos
offering tips and ideas for parents to become more
involved in their child’s learning.
“Parents’ involvement is an important part of a good
education and with the strong support of school teachers
and families; children can do better through their school
life.
“The app is available for downloading from the App Store
and Google Play, and I encourage all parents to check it
out.”
The Learning Potential website also contains all of the
content from the app to make sure that content is
available to people who do not own a smart device, with
all content available in an accessible format.
The Learning Potential mobile app was launched recently
by the Minister for Education and Training the Hon
Christopher Pyne MP.
Minister Pyne said this app offers inspiring ways for
parents and carers to become more involved in their
child’s learning, from the high chair through to high
school.

Applications have opened for grants to engage 'at risk'
young people in sport and recreation activities.
Member for Wagin Terry Waldron MLA said the Youth
Engagement Scheme, which is administered by the
Department of Sport and Recreation targeted youth aged
eight to 18 years who lived in lower socio-economic areas
in metropolitan and regional locations.
“This initiative is designed to support local governments
and not-for-profit organisations to deliver programs that
are targeted at local youth,” Mr Waldron said.
He suggested interested local groups consider submitting
an application.
“I’d encourage eligible groups in the electorate to apply
for funding for projects that assist our young people. As
the old adage goes, ‘our young people are our future’,”
he said.
Mr Waldron said program funding was available for
projects that would create stronger, more connected
communities.
“Grants for projects up to $40,000 will be considered,” he
said.
Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies said the
projects should enable the young people to connect with
their communities via a range of sport and recreation
activities.
"We know that sport can help shape a better society and
when young people carry good values, strong leadership
and strong mental and physical health into adulthood,
the whole community wins," Ms Davies said.
"These activities will be provided in safe environments
with mentors and leaders experienced in engaging
disconnected, at risk youth."
The Youth Engagement Scheme is a new initiative that
started as a result of the Northbridge Youth Diversionary
programs, which have been funded since January 2010.
Projects funded under the Northbridge scheme include
the highly successful Ignite Basketball (Armadale),
Streetball in Hilton and Midland's Night Hoops.
Mr Waldron said that although these successful programs
all featured a basketball component, it was recognised
that a broader approach across sport and recreation
would engage a greater audience within the target group.
This round of the Youth Engagement Scheme closes at
5pm on Friday, October 9. Program delivery starts after
November 1, 2015.

C and B grade we’re fighting to stay in and it was vital that they won so they could play again in the Preliminary Final… A grade we’re playing to go straight through or have a second chance the weekend after….
C grade got the day started and beat a young Hyden Karlgarin side 5 nil!! Well played everybody, you were all awesome and all your efforts during the course of the season are paying off.
B grade were up against a skilled Narembeen side, but they were no match for the mighty Vipers who had a brilliant 2-1 win against a side who they lost to a few weeks ago! Brilliant effort everyone, great willpower and well fought out to the end.
It was a top of the table showdown between the KK Vipers and the Karlgarin Hyden Khats, the girls we’re victorious in a fantastic 4-1 defeat!! The short corners looked like something out of a play book, the crowd was in awe! Well done on a brilliant win and going straight through to the Grand final!!!
The men played over in Merredin on the turf against Bruce Rock and sadly went down 7-2, unlucky guys… But congratulations on a fantastic season… You should all be proud of your efforts and all your hard work!!

Exercise Gives You Energy
You might be surprised at how, say, popping in a
workout tape for 30 minutes in the morning can change
your whole day. When endorphins are released into your
bloodstream during exercise, says Astorino, "you feel
much more energized the rest of the day."
And when you improve your strength and stamina, it's
easier to accomplish everyday tasks like carrying
groceries and climbing stairs. This also helps you feel
more energetic over the course of the day.
A common excuse among Atkinson's clients is that
they're too tired to exercise, he says. While exercise may
make you feel more tired at first, he says, that won't last
long.
The physical tiredness you feel after working out isn't
the same as everyday fatigue, he says. Besides, once
your body adjusts to exercise, you'll have more energy
than ever.
