    2013 RELAY FOR LIFEMichele Altenburger

Honorary Co-Chair representing womenSeven years ago our can-

    cer journey began because

I discovered a lump in my

    right breast. An ultrasound

    and biopsy later revealed

stage 2 breast cancer. Com-plicating the cancer diagno-

sis further was the fact that

    I was twenty four weeks

    pregnant with twins at the

    same time. That day forever

    marked the day of uncer-

    tainty, fear, shock, and com-

    plete disbelief that we were

    embarking on a journey no

one ever wants to trek. I was

immediately sent to OSU fortreatment as my local doctors

had never treated a pregnantwoman with cancer (not to

mention carrying twins). I began chemotherapy treatments for a period of 4

months along with bimonthly ultrasounds to monitor the twins growth. Our

twin girls Avery and Brooke were born at 37 weeks via C-section with no

    complications whatsoever!

Two months later I was at the OSU James Hospital where I had a right

modied mastectomy with TRAM-ap reconstruction, a seven hour surgery.

After four days I was able to return home to recover with the help of family

and friends. Another month later I began more chemotherapy treatments thistime in Lima so I could continue to work and be there for our family. Im

proud to say that Ive had no relapses since my last treatment in 2007 but I

continue to see my oncologist once a year for checkups.

My husband Brian and I are very grateful for the blessings of our girls

Brianna, Avery, and Brooke and we hope and pray that research continues

so that one day we can live in a cancer free world.

    Laura Peters

Honorary Co-Chair representing womenWhen I was rst diag-

nosed, it was a numbing ef-

    fect. The world stopped and

then you have to put every-

    thing into perspective. I was

diagnosed with stage 2 inl-trating ductal carcinoma, the

    most common type of breast

    cancer. My mammogram

was on Oct. 27, 2011 and on

    Nov. 8, I was diagnosed.

    I underwent a lumpecto-

my and I had four sessions

of what they call AC chemo-

therapy. Then I did 12 treat-

    ments of Taxol. After that,

I did 33 daily treatments ofradiation. The ride to the

    hospital took longer than thetreatments.

Its hard to nail down a date for when I was considered cancer-free be-

cause they tell you that you start to recover the day youre diagnosed. My

treatments were all preventative. They removed the problem with the sur-

gery, so everything after that was just to make sure it didnt go anywhere

else and to keep it from coming back.

My relationships with my husband and my daughters have grown so much

closer. My daughters, Rachel and Michelle, designed a shirt for me. They

both live out of town and that was their way of helping me get through it.My husband, Chuck, was really good about not letting me over-do things

around the house. You really learn who your true friends are when you go

through something like this. I received so many notes from people I dont

    even really talk to.

No matter how long or hard the battle is, surviving cancer teaches impor-

    tant life lessons.

Honorary Chair representing men(As told by his son, Paul W. Richardson)

Dad was diagnosed in late Janu-

ary 2013 with stage 3 pancreatic

    cancer. He has had chemotherapy

to try and shrink the medium-ag-

gressive tumor on his pancreas as

well as wrapped around a vein. Sur-gery is hopeful if the tumor around

    the vein can be shrunk.

Our dad has been the person thattaught us to love others uncon-

    ditionally, judge sparingly, work

hard, be strong and learn something

new daily. He taught us how to love

    someone more than ourselves as

proof by the way he has loved our

mom all of these years. Their lovefor one another has inspired us in so many ways that we have lost count.

The family has rallied together to try to do whatever we can to help andsupport each other. Needless to say, its been tough to think about the fact

that we could lose dad. We are hopeful but also understand this type of can-

cer has a 5-percent survival rate and the surgeon told us that the chemo work-

ing was a 50/50 shot in order to do surgery.

We have been focused on the positive and it was my brother Tom and

sister-in-law Chris idea to do a team for Relay For Life, as they have chaired

the event in their local area previously. They thought it would be a good way

to rally the extended family and friends and give us all something to focus

on that had a positive outcome (if for no other reason than to burn up the

nervous energy associated with waiting to see what happens).Richardson is married to Rebecca and is a lifelong resident of Delphos

where he raised his three children: Tom, Char and Paul. He has seven grand-

children: Kendra Parlin and Kody Richardson of Delphos, Andy and Nicky

Richardson of Johnstown and Kyrsten, Jaydan and Lawrence Slygh of Lima.

He also has a great-granddaughter, Myah Buettner of Delphos.

    HONORARY CHAIRSEthan Brown

Honorary Chair representing children(As told by his mother, Lynn Lucke)

When Ethan was about 4 months old,

    I took him to a well-baby appointment

with his pediatricians. I questioned why

he had not gained weight since his last

visit. Ethan was a happy smiling robust

baby boy and the doctor saw no need for

concern. When he reached 6 1/2 months,

it was like someone ipped a switch and

my happy baby boy lost his smile and en-ergy. Several more doctor visits over the

next several months found nothing. I was

viewed as the neurotic rst-time mom

but I knew something was wrong. When

he was 8 1/2 months, we had a doctor

visit with a new doctor. She laid him at

on his back and found a very large, rm

mass of something in his abdomen. She

sent us straight to the hospital where he was admitted and had a CT scan. Thescan showed a very large abdominal mass, they suspected neuroblastoma.

Ethan was diagnosed with stage 3, intermediate risk, neuroblastoma. He

received 10 rounds of chemotherapy over the course of 3 months. He spent

his rst birthday at Childrens Hospital receiving chemo.

Once his immune system bounced back, he was scheduled for surgery. He was around 13 months old. He spent a week in the PICU. The surgeon

removed what he could, but there was still a small amount left behind as the

tumor had grown around major blood vessels. More testing was done and

the nal word was that the malignancy was well encapsulated within the tis-

sue that had been removed and there was no reason to believe that the tissueremaining would cause any more trouble.

Throughout the entire process Ethan was a trooper. So many people came

together to celebrate and encourage us. Probably the biggest impact was my

mom (Ruth Lucke). She walked through that trying time with me and Ethan.

This year marks Ethans 12 year of being cancer free. I am so proud of him.

A large part of my daily routine outside of my pro-fessional life revolves around taking care of my ownpets. For me it is a labor of love. Thank goodness myhusband is a true farmer and loves to get up at the crackof dawn because, by default, he gets to air the dogs.Upon rising, the Border Collies immediately seek thewere ready to work stance, while Welsh Corgi BetsyLouise, like me, prefers a slower, quieter approach tothe day.

Once the dogs are aired, our day gets underway.Even our cats participate in the ow, approaching theirposts to ask politely in Ruthies case, and vehementlyin Jobeys case, to break their fast. At Welshire Farm, the pets do feast before us because their jobs are im-measurable all day long.

Now I know you are thinking you know what theBorder Collies do on a sheep farm that numbers over100 head. There is a lot of work to do and half-siblings,Robbie and Jimmy, truly relish their employment. But,what does Betsy Louise do with her day?

Alas, Betsy has the hardest job of all as the self-appointed entertainer and smile-maker. With her wig-gly nubbin of a tail, too short legs, and abbreviatedrabbit ears, she is sure to make even the down-troddengrin. Ask her Do you like sheep? and shell meltyour heart with a sideways glance and a take-chargeWoof!

As for the cats, the term needy is more tting asthey make it clear that we are permitted to reside intheir kingdom, provided we act like staff and attend totheir desires timely. For Jobey, that includes the not sosubtle reminder that it has been about four hours sincehis last snack. Ruthie, the princess, on the otherhand, just wants to be told how beautiful she is with herboastfully vibrant calico coat.

Why am I sharing these observations with you? Thefact is that while we are caring for our sometimes needypets, what they are giving us in return gives reason forour every happiness and existence. I cannot fathom my

life without pets because while several accommoda-tions are made for them in our daily living and budget, what our pets provide for us is beyond measure, enrich-ing, therapeutic, and joyful--- all at once.

Besides love and companionship, pets provide a rea-son to get up for so many who suffer from depression, loss, loneliness, and physical disabilities. They giveus a purpose and, more importantly, they do not judge, and they always forgive. That makes them better than

humans in so many ways.Studies have shown that pets of all kinds can heal

humans by lowering blood pressure, relieving stress, and encouraging exercise. They help us become so-cially active and can be trained to guide the blind, de-tect oncoming seizures, and sniff out bladder cancer.Pets have the unique ability to make autistic childreninteract, mute patients speak, and veterans with post-traumatic stress syndrome cope. All of this, for so littlein return.

I would argue with great vigor that pets are everyday

heroes and caregivers. The American Cancer Society(ACS) has recognized this fact and now includes dogsin a Relay for Life event called Bark for Life. Thismini-relay and fundraising dog walk honors the caregiving qualities of canine companions.

Like so many of us, the ACS sees pets as membersof the family and, to many cancer survivors, they arecaregivers. Just ask pet-owning cancer survivors,Bob Ulm, Sandy and Mike Gray, Pam Wade, and Deb-bie Mayes.

Bob Ulm, who will be the parade marshal for therst Bark for Life associated with Delphos Relay forLife on June 22nd, will gladly tell you how importanthis Pilot Dog, Pippa, is to him in his every day life. Boblost his sight to eye cancer before a year of age. I alsoasked Sandy, Mike, Pam and Debbie if they thoughttheir pets were caregivers for them. They all comment-ed that their pets provided distraction, purpose, and, ofcourse, love, during some truly daunting times.

My constant quest is to identify who among us hasnot been touched by cancer? As the daughter anddaughter-in law of victims of cancer, I would love tosee a cure for cancer in my lifetime. Until then, I willnever underestimate the power of pets as caregiversand as the best medicine of all.

Dr. Bonnie Jones is co-owner of Delphos AnimalHospital and encourages you and your dog to attendDelphos Bark for Life from 2-5 p.m. Saturday at Lei-sure Park.
