Muslim Aid’s Education and Child Development Programme is promoting education and personal development specifically for the working and destitute children by providing them educational facilities. Since 2009, the activities are being executed at Child Care Centers (CCC’s) in Tarlai, Burma Town and Tarnol situated in the suburbs of Islamabad. Till Dec 2013, around 350 children were facilitated in three Centers. Since majority of the working children are behind their age-related grade, methodology of Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) is being implemented while ensuring integrity of course contents with that of the Government. Muslim Aid also focuses on mobilizing and sensitizing the parents of these children and the community at large to make them realize about the crucial need of education for the development of their children.Focus on the education of girls’ child has also been one of the top priorities. As a result, 45% plus of the total enrolled children are girls – in areas where female education is traditionally ignored.

Highlights: • 200 students from Burma Center and 150 students from Tarnol Center successfully completed

their five grades (from KG-I to KG-V).• Regular Health-Screening Sessions• Moral/Etiquettes trainings• Re-creational/Study Visits and extra-curricular activities • Parent Teacher Meetings / Awareness Sessions for Parents• Awareness Raising on National / International Days

Message from Country Director

Assalamu Alaikum (Peace be upon you)Muslim Aid envisions a world of peace, compassion and justice where all people achieve fulfillment. Consequently, a comprehensive strategy is devised to alleviate poverty and its causes by developing innovative and sustainable solutions that enable people and their communities to live with dignity and independence. The year 2013 too, remained full of challenges for Relief & Development organizations in which district Awaran in Balochistan was jolted by earthquake leaving considerable human and infrastructure losses; the militancy and subsequent military operations in Khyber Agency (KPK) forced thousands of people dislocated, floods of 2013 in a number of districts in Punjab and Sindh disrupted life and wreaked widespread devastations. Muslim Aid extended passionate support with fullest energies encompassing the distribution of food and non-food items (F/NFIs), establishment of Emergency Education Project in Jalozai IDPs camp, sustained health interventions in the affected areas, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) through PATS,CLTS and SLTS approaches in Rajanpur and DG Khan, Emergency Responses in Shadadkot and Rajanpur and the Integrated Model Village approach in Mianwali, Rajanpur and Dadu has been exponentially unique and outstanding. The Annual Report 2013 is portraying the rainbow of glorious reflections of the triumphant strikes of Muslim Aid Pakistan team who continued with amazing energies to turn dreams into reality. At this particular juncture, Muslim Aid feels indebted through extending solemn gratitude towards our valued donors who provided their invaluable financial support extended at critical stages. We are committed to continue the journey of ‘Serving Humanity’ through cohesive, inventive and effective solutions to turn the miseries of disadvantaged and marginalized sections of society into prosperous and bright future.

Muslim Aid is offering substantial financial assistance to vulnerable children for education, health, food and clothing under its Rainbow Family Programme & Education Sponsorship Programme. Rainbow Family Programme is designed to sponsor Orphans, vulnerable and needy children, who are deprived and under-privileged in terms of access to quality education, health and other basic needs of food and clothing. There are ample reasons to believe that such neglected children of society might become an easy prey to more abusing and negative tilts of the society which will certainly contribute not only to compromise on their quality of their grown up years but also to malign the peaceful and healthy environment. To address the needs of these poor and vulnerable children, Rainbow Family sponsorship program helps them avail quality education, food, clothing and better health services in their own vicinity till the age of 18 years to become the responsible citizens. Hifz sponsorship is also a newly introduced component of the project.

Seasonal flood of 2013 affected the agrarian land of union council Noor poor and Haji poor of District Rajanpur. The Agrarian community suffered the losses of seasonal crops and livestock. The objective was early recovery of agriculture, livelihood and food security in flood affected areas of District Rajanpur. The project supported affected communities through provision of agricultural inputs, livestock and poultry support, rehabilitation/reconstruction of basic community physical infrastructures and building their capacities to achieve the objective of restoring their livelihood sources. As majority of the villages of Rajanpur were extremely vulnerable in terms of being at high risk of future hazards. So project predicted forming village level Livelihoods Restoration Communities (LRCs) by building their capacities in Disaster Risk Management to transform them into resilient communities.

In September 2012, floods in Pakistan affected more than 5 million people. Balochistan, Punjab and Sindh provinces were the hardest hit. Humanitarian partners piloted the Multi-sector Initial Rapid Assessment (MIRA) in five of the most-affected districts. The MIRA found at least 2 million people in need of humanitarian assistance in the five assessed districts, according to data cross-tabulated with land scan satellite imagery and information provided by district authorities. Achieving consensus on the population in need was challenging as flood water continued to rise and more areas became inundated during the assessment. This project located in Qubo Saeed Khan, UCs included Hazarwah, Aitbar Chandio, Jamali, Qubo Saeed Khan and Dheghano Mahesar which benefited 3,800 families or 26,600 people. Beneficiaries received clean water and saved from water borne diseases by using aqua tab and pure sachets. Beneficiaries engaged in health education and received NFIs kits. For sustainable solution of drinking water, hand pumps were installed and latrines were constructed in project areas.

Key achievements: • Installation and Rehabilitation of 150 Hand Pumps with 1500 beneficiaries• HH water treatment with 48000 sachets• Construction of 50 latrines and 150 families as beneficiaries• 300 Hygiene sessions conducted by hygiene promoters • Provision and distribution of gender sensitive family hygiene and WASH kits to 3,000 families of

Rain flood in 2010, 2011 and 2013 caused widespread devastations in Qambar Shahdadkot. Muslim Aid initiated Emergency Response in flood affected district Qambar Shahdadkot in 2013 to timely respond National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) who declared emergency and called for assistance. Monsoon rain affected different districts of Sindh including Qamber-Shahdadkot. Operational areas for implementation were UCs Bago Daro and Hazarwah. Muslim Aid focused on primary health activities and provided relief to communities by arranging 33 mobile camps. The direct beneficiaries were flood affected people of UC Bago Daro and Hazarwah. The only challenge was to protect vulnerable community before any massive loss. By effective use of volunteers and government departments the MAP team was able to save life and gain relief. In emergencies, relief is immense, but for long term sustainability; formation of local organizations, capacity building and linkages are important.

Beneficiaries: The project directly benefited about 2,813 beneficiaries.

Emergencies Response

ONE STEP AHEAD IN RESPONDING TO EMERGENCIES & BETTER RECOVERY

The flood affects district Rajanpur every year. It is caused by two main factors i.e. hill torrents and riverine. However, this year monsoon season starting July 2013 with torrential rains gave rise to heavy flash floods in the affected areas of the Suleman Mountain range. Channels (Naalas) namely, DarraKah Sultan, DarraChachar, DarraPotokh and DarraSurri (streams) over flooded with heavy rains also aggravated the situation in the hill torrent side of District Rajanpur. The monsoon spell started in Southern Punjab during last week of July 2013. Above Average Heavy downpour in the last 3 days of the spell gave rise to tremendous Hill torrents in the Western Mountain Ranges. The heavy rains and the resultant torrents played havoc in the district. Houses were demolished, possessions lost, fields inundated, link roads destroyed. Being a relief and development organization, Muslim Aid Pakistan initiated its relief efforts to address immediate needs of people in district Rajanpur. It geared up to strive for relief and early recovery of flood affected people in this district. In this respect, a rapid assessment was conducted to know damages of flood and pressing needs of people. And on the basis of assessment, Muslim Aid initiated an early recovery of livelihood, provision of basic medical services and community development program in the most affected areas of district.

Project location and beneficiaries: Based on the need assessment, focused on 2500 families or 15,575 individuals (4,808 men, 5,004 women, 2,824 boys and 2,939 girls) were identified and targeted for project intervention in the most affected UCs including Haji Poor and UC Wah Lashari

Emergencies Response

Baluchistan has experienced two powerful earthquakes on 24th and 28th September 2013. It was a call for assistance to humanitarian organizations to rescue and save people’s life. The earthquake was very intensive that affected at least 27,400 households or 138,372 people, and damaged or destroyed 19,688 houses in assessed areas in Kech (UCs: Dandar and Hoshap) and Awaran (UCs: Awaran, Teertaj, Giskore, Gajjar, Nokjo and Parwar). Project involved key stakeholders to build consensus on criteria of giving preference to marginalized and vulnerable segments. The geographical areas to deliver interventions were selected on the basis of worst affected, most vulnerable and less accessible locations by other service providers. Provincial Hub Karachi took lead in supervising all operational activities from need assessment to final distribution, coordination with other organizations to government departments since the project initiated in September 25, 2013 with the cost of Rs. 3,400,000. This liaison assisted to improve operation and reach far most beneficiaries in the remotest areas. Local volunteers helped Muslim Aid and took NFIs and FIs from no go areas. Due to hard and dedicated work of volunteers and staff Muslim Aid covered 2,096 families instead of 500 during emergency response till December 2013. Tents, aqua boxes, food items, blankets and sweaters were the part of NFIs and FIs. By strengthening local leadership and organizations, MA ensure their sustainability and self-reliance and improve livelihood. Muslim Aid has completed emergency response and distribution process and acknowledged support of donors, institutions and individuals for this special project. In future Muslim Aid could work in collaboration with other organizations for shelter, drinking water and girls’ education.

District Mianwali was severely hit by the most devastating flood in 2010 in the history of Pakistan, causing a widespread destruction all around. The people had little capacities for planning and responding to floods and therefore had to face massive losses of lives, assets and infrastructure. Keeping this in view, Muslim Aid initiated a project for building capacities of people on Community Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) in villages including Kot Chandna, Khadozai, Jalal Pur, Gandha Sharif villages of Kot Chandna UC Mianwali so that they could properly plan and respond to floods and/or other disasters to mitigate their impacts. The objective of this project was to better prepare the local communities to cope with future disasters, to reduce their risks and vulnerabilities and to increase the capacities of communities in Kot Chandna UC of district Mianwali. This was ensured by construction of flood embankments/ridges, tree plantation, providing rescue facilities, delivering trainings, developing and executing village disaster management plans, and developing early warning systems.

Major Activities and beneficiaries: • Formation of 4 Community Based Organizations (CBOs), consisting of 100 members• Formation of village Disaster Management Committee (VDMC), consisting of 48 members• Conducting of 4 mock drills in which 120 members participated• Delivery of 4 Early Warning System trainings, participated by 100 members • Delivery of 4 Rescue trainings, participated by 105 members
