These are the main codes and conventions that I will need to include in my magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread to ensure that it is at great standards and can look similar to other popular, leading music magazines.

Conventions

MASTHEAD• The masthead of a magazine tends to be at the top of the front cover and

contains the name or logo of the magazine. It normally stands out on the page and is occasionally covered by the main image. The masthead is always bold and tends to stay the same colour depending on the house style of the magazine and the theme. For example, A girly magazine may have a pink or purple masthead to fit the theme.

HEADLINES & SUBHEADINGS

• Headings are normally used to tell the reader what is included inside the magazine. The headline is usually used to link with the main story and also the main image. It is normally displayed in bold on top, or next to the main image.

• Subheadings are the small stories which are also included in the magazine. These are used to show the less important stories in the magazine but still tells the reader what is included inside. They are normally placed at the side of the magazine are in smaller, less bold, fonts.

TAGLINES • Taglines are small stories and advertisements which are also

included on the magazine front cover. They also link to the smaller articles and things that catch the readers eye. For example, ‘Special Edition Magazine’.

COLOUR/ HOUSE STYLE• The colour/house style of a magazine is very important as they are used

to fit the theme of the magazine. For example, a feminine magazine would fit to a colour scheme of colours such as pink or purple where as a male magazine would include more masculine colours. The colour can change due to the type of music that is featured. For instance a rock music magazine could include darker colours like black or red

MAIN IMAGE & IMAGESImages are very important in a magazine as they give the reader an idea of who is featured inside and what it is about. This also makes the magazine’s appearance much better and shows the reader what type of music the magazine includes. The main image normally takes up most of the front cover and occasionally covers the masthead.Other images that are featured inside the magazine are also important as they relate to the stories and articles and makes the magazine appear better to its audience

VIBE MAGAZINEContents Double Page Spread Front Cover Vibe magazine can be used

an example of the codes and conventions I need to include in my magazine. The front cover, double page spread and contents page all include an image which stands out. The house style of the front cover also fits with the main image. The front cover and double page spread both include a headline related to the image featured on them. Further on, the contents and front cover inform the audience what stories are inside the magazine.
