Newsletter Term 3 week 5 KidsMatter News KidsMatter is an Australian mental health and wellbeing initiative set in primary schools and
in early childhood education and care services – like preschools, kindergartens and day care
centres.
It’s not a program, but a framework that helps these places take care of all their mental
health needs.
At Tucker Road Bentleigh Primary School we are at the beginning stages of implementing
this framework.
To find out more about KidsMatter, we are inviting parents to attend either one of the
briefings to be held at the school. An invitation was sent home last week with the eldest
child in the family. Please return the reply slip if you are attending the second session. The
second parent information briefing for those families who missed the session on Monday, is
scheduled for Tuesday September 8 at 7pm in the Hall. Thank you to Marie Chalas for her
very informative presentation to the school community on Monday morning’s PFA meeting.
Levelled Literacy Intervention (LLI) news The LLI program is currently being implemented by Mrs Leonie Wallis; a past teacher of
TRBPS who is resuming for a short time this year from Family Leave. Leonie is working
from Monday to Wednesday and will ensure that this program continues to be implemented
effectively for the remainder of the term. Leonie has spent some time with Mrs Mehl to
learn all about this literacy support program and understand where the students are placed so
she can continue to assist the children’s literacy progress. If you have any concerns please
contact Mrs Marie Chalas or Mrs Leonie Wallis to discuss your child’s needs. Welcome
back Leonie!
2015 Concert Details The end of year concert has been booked to go ahead at Kingston Centre on December 2
after much staff discussion. The format has changed slightly in the hope that it will
accommodate more parents/carers and siblings who may wish to attend each performance.
The Matinee show will consist of students in years P-2 and the evening show will consist of
students in years 3-6. Graduation is a separate event this year which will raise the profile and
also allow more members of each family to attend the formal graduation ceremony; this is
scheduled to take place on December 10 at Bentleigh Secondary College. The graduation
dinner and disco will occur on the evening of December 15 in the school hall allowing more
time for the students to enjoy the disco; more graduation information will follow. The year 6
students will still perform the school song to close the concert.
Student Voice and Leadership news As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, some of our year 6 student leaders and year 5 SRC
reps attended a ‘Say No to Bullying’ – Bayside BullyStoppers Conference and some year
five students visited Brighton Secondary College for a Leadership Conference. Each group
had an amazing day of active participation in a variety of very thought provoking
workshops. Please read some of their reports which are included below. Thank you to Ms
Claire Valentine for accompanying the students to BSC for the Leadership Conference last
Friday.
Leadership Skills Workshop On Thursday 30 July, 18 of our year 5 students were lucky enough to attend a series of
Leadership Skills Workshops run by year 9 and 10 students of Brighton Secondary College.
There, the students were introduced to children from other schools in our area and enjoyed a
fun-packed morning getting to know their peers. Facilitated by the Brighton Secondary
students, they worked in groups throughout the day to discuss important leadership qualities
such as motivation, confidence, organisation and problem solving. The children ana-
lysed current local, national and international leaders and shared their experiences of leaders
from their own environments. In the afternoon, our students showed tremendous confidence
when challenged to present to an audience on an impromptu topic. They had a wonderful
time interacting with students from other schools and will have come away with many
important skills to help them become leaders of the future. Thank you to Ms Claire
Valentine who accompanied the students on this day.

TRBPS Grandparent’s Day Today was grandparent’s day and we welcomed all of our children’s grandparents or the
very special people in our children’s lives to our school community. The children were
very excited and shared what they do at school and put on a delightful performance for
their loved ones! There was a special morning tea which was enjoyed by everyone who
attended. Thank you to the following teachers: Mrs Pattie Csendes, Ms Renata Davis,
Mrs June Gaffney, Mrs Estelle Schwab and Mr Young for the very entertaining
morning. Thank You to all of the grandparents and other loved ones who joined us for
this special event, it was a huge success!
I’d also like to thank the PFA for the wonderful morning tea!
Cycling to school There have been some recent queries about cycling to school and children’s safety. School
Council representative Naomi Dyson has completed some research about Glen Eira Council
regulations for cyclists, so please ensure you read the flyer attached to the newsletter on Safe
Cycling. Thank you Naomi for being so proactive on behalf of the school community!
Have a fantastic week!

Velza learns her limits
Dantar and Velza sat on the edge of the cliff. Listening to the sounds of the ocean, feeling the fresh air blow on their skin and the
suns’ burning rays making them hot and itchy. Velza was practising her fire magic and showing off in front of Dantar.
It was her eighth birthday and she was very excited. She was also determined to make her firecastings work over water. Velza did
not like the word ‘Impossible’, but as much as she tried, she could not do it. Dantar laughed.
‘You will never be able to do it, what a waste of time!’
Velza became angry by this statement. She stood up and blasted him with an enormous red flame, setting his shirt on fire.
‘Get some water,’ screeched Dantar in fright. ‘Help me!’
Velza smothered the flames, not realising how close she was to the edge. She stepped back, about to laugh, when her foot slipped
and she fell. Her hands gripping onto the edge of the cliff.
Dantar ran to the cliff’s edge and reached down to help Velza, but couldn’t reach her. He looked around and saw some vines. He
ran to them and made rope, knowing how to do this by watching the sailors when in Port. The vines were very long. He tied them
around a tree nearby and dropped it down the cliff. Velza grabbed hold and Dantar pulled with all his might.
The two siblings lay down huffing and puffing. Velza finally caught her breath and gave Dantar a big hug full of gratefulness. They
walked home together knowing that no matter what differences and fights they had, they had each others’ backs for life.

MIXED BLUE NETBALL A huge congratulations to the Mixed Blue Netball Team who had a fantastic season through Interschool Sport. They remain undefeated, taking out the Grand Final in a heart-stopping match. On Monday 27
th July, the team went on to
compete in a Round Robin style tournament in the Kingston Division Finals. They played 3 exhausting games, back to back, displaying fantastic team work and encouragement. Despite their passion and drive, it was not meant to be and our team finished in an impressive third place. A huge thank you to all the parents who were able to drive our team and support them from the sidelines – Dee Barnard, Liza Day, Tania Poll & Dimi Hrysikos. Well done to the team on their amazing efforts – you are all superstars!!

Bayside Says No to Bullying – Youth Forum 2015
On Wednesday July 29th, Bayside City Council hosted a Youth Forum at the Brighton Town Hall. Gr 5 and 6
students were invited to attend and participate in a variety of workshops to raise awareness in the local
community around the issue of bullying. Tucker Road PS was one of 9 schools that attended the ‘Say No to
Bullying Forum’, along with students from Sandringham PS, Hampton PS, Brighton Beach PS, Beaumaris
PS, Sandringham East PS, Gardenvale PS, St Finbars PS and St Agnes PS. The forum was hosted by Bayside
Mayor, Felicity Frederico and run by Bayside Youth Councillors.
We arrived and were welcomed by the Bayside Youth Councillors and the Bayside Mayor. We were split into
4 groups. There were three workshops and everyone got to participate in 2 out of the 3. Session 1 was ‘Project
Rockit’. They were fantastic and talked to us about what bullying is and the signs of bullying, which include
‘Unfair Power’, ‘On Purpose’ and ‘Repeated’. We played lots of fun games too! Session 2 was about
Friendship. We spoke about all the emotions and feelings you can have when it comes to bullying. We had to
identify how other people were feeling, based on their facial expressions and their body language. We spoke
about the good and bad qualities a friend can have. Session 3 was about Wellbeing. It showed us how to deal
with stress and anger. We had to identify good and bad stress. We spoke about what wellbeing is and were
introduced to some meditation and yoga strategies. We also learnt that colouring is a fantastic way to relieve
stress and relax and we received some special colouring sheets called ‘mandalas’.
After our delicious hot lunch and some running around, we split up into our four groups again ready for more
workshops. These 4 workshops focused on different aspects of cyberbullying and being safe on the internet.
Workshop 1 was about Cyberbullying. We talked about how to stop cyberbullying and different types to
watch out for and different terms used when talking about cyberbullying. For example, ‘catfishing’ is when
someone changes their identity to bully someone and remain anonymous. Workshop 2 was about Apps. We
learnt about the four most popular apps and how to be safe when using them (when we are old enough of
course) – Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Kik. What we found really interesting was that on Facebook,
there are 1.44 billion existing users around the world. WOW! Workshop 3 was called ‘Netiquette’. It was
about how to be responsible online. Workshop 4 was about Online Gaming. We learnt about the pros and
cons of online gaming. One positive is you get to interact with your friends, but a negative is that your
identity could be stolen. Some amazing facts we learnt were that 1.2 billion people play games (any type)
worldwide daily and that 7 million of these people are actually playing online!
After these workshops we concluded the day with an amazing African Drumming workshop run by Boba &
Amadoo. We all got to play our own drum and then had fun with some African Dancing!
The Youth Forum was an incredible experience, we all had so much fun learning about how to keep ourselves
and others safe from bullying and meeting other students who want the same!
