Weekly Wisdom

John

Friendship

How would you describe your relationship with Jesus? John the Baptist and John the Apostle both had very special relationships with Jesus, yet those relationships could not have been more different. From his earliest knowledge of Jesus, John the Baptist held Him in great respect and great reverence. Yet he kept his distance from Jesus. He had a job to do and he got it done. He wasn’t coming to Jesus asking, “How am I doing?” He knew what he needed to do, and he took care of it. John the Apostle had the opposite relationship in many respects. He was tremendously close to Jesus and spent three years at His side. He had the courage to stand at the foot of the cross – the only man among a group of brave women. And he is referred to, six times in the Gospel, as the disciple Jesus loved.

How do you describe your relationship with Jesus? The saints placed Jesus at the center of everything they did; and they discovered the best version of themselves in and through Jesus. How do you want to be remembered? Do you want to be remembered as a worldly person or a spiritual person? Do you hope to be thought of as a disciple of Jesus? Isn’t this the relationship that God desires all of us to have with His son? Jesus called His disciples “friends.” The saints recognized this. They didn’t care about making a reputation for themselves…they cared about their relationship with Jesus, and from that flowed all the goodness and genius they shared with the world.

“Seek first the kingdom of God.” This means that we should choose to enter into a life-giving relationship with Jesus, and make that friendship a daily priority…making your main thing your relationship with God. The saints were God’s friends on this earth. And now it’s your turn.

Lord, inspire me to care more about my friendship with You than about my accomplishments in this world. Help me to make our time together each day a sacred and nonnegotiable touchstone of daily life. Teach me how to be a good friend to others. Amen.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR HOLY FAMILY PRAYER LINE MINISTRY: The Prayer Line Ministry is a group of volunteers who use a “Phone Tree” to pass on prayer requests. There is a Daytime “Phone Tree” (for those who are available to take and make calls during the day) and a Nightime “Phone Tree” (for those who are only available in the evening). You can choose which one you would like to be on.

Here’s how our Prayer Line works: The prayer request is activated when a call is placed to the Parish Office. Then the Prayer Line Coordinator starts the Day List and the Night List. Once a call is received, the volunteer passes the name and prayer request to the next person on the “Phone Tree” list. Please note that this ministry is especially for critical situations. The name of the person to pray for can also be added to the Bulletin prayer request list.

During these uncertain times and while we are “sheltering in place” and staying home, this is a safe way to be involved in church ministry. If you are interested, please call the Parish Office (757-481-5702) and leave your name, phone number, and email address. If you are a current Prayer Line minister, please confirm that you are still interested in continuing to be a volunteer.

Please prayerfully consider being a part of this important ministry that enables miracles to happen through the power of prayer.

“Whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you receive it, and you will.” ~ Mark 11: 24

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Hey, would you like to help out with lawn mowing and yard work? We are in need of volunteers for the summer Grass Cutting and Lawn Maintenance Ministry. If you can help, please contact Mark at 481-5702 or email [email protected].

BICENTENNIAL BOOK AVAILABLE: The Diocese of Richmond has created a beautiful commemorative book, “Shine Like Stars” to celebrate its Bicentennial Year. This book highlights our two hundred year history with text, pictures, and profiles of our nearly 150 parishes. You can purchase this commemorative book in our Parish Office for $25.00.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR – RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE AT HOLY FAMILY: There will be a Red Cross Blood Drive here at Holy Family on Wednesday, August 19, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. To sign up, go to www.redcrossblood.org and enter sponsor code: CHF, or contact Georgia at 408-2326.

NEW! All blood donations are now tested for COVID-19 antibodies. The test results will be available within 7 to 10 days after your successful donation.

PRAYER LINE PHONE TREE MINISTRY:

Holy Family has a Prayer Line Ministry which consists of a phone tree that is used to pass on critical situations which are in need of prayer. If you or a family member or a loved one are in need of prayer, please call the Parish Office at 481-5702, and ask to be put on the Prayer Line Phone Tree. If you would like, please share a little about your critical situation that needs prayer.

If you have asked to be on the Prayer Line Phone Tree and prayers have been answered, let us know so that we can pass on a “Praise Report.”

“Whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you receive it, and you will.”

~ Mark 11: 24

“CREATION CARE CORNER:”

Continuing from last week’s article, regarding how single-use plastics affect ocean and land creatures as well as climate change, we now consider what steps we, as individuals, can take to offset the problem.

We must make better choices as consumers and we must pressure corporations to design earth-friendly products. We need our federal, state, and local governments to invest in waste management programs and public education campaigns. Let’s use our voting privilege with that in mind. Additional actions we can take are: switching to reusable bottles for water and tumblers for coffee, opting for soap bars rather than liquid soap and any item that’s wrapped in recyclable material rather than its liquid, plastic-bottled, counterpart. We can also have on hand stainless steel straws, a set of bamboo or metal eating utensils to avoid plastic versions. Keep canvas or reusable bags in your car to carry groceries and other items you buy. Carry cloth bags (remember to bring them with you when you go into the store!) to hold the vegetables you purchase instead of plastic bags. Ask your office managers and Church leaders to replace plastic stirrers with wooden ones, and switch from plastic eating utensils, cups, bowls, and plates to reusable tableware that are washable, or, as a second option, change over to biodegradable products. When you are shopping, keep alert and conscious about which items you purchase that are in single-use plastic and try to come up with an alternative.

Hopefully, we are not tossing our styrofoam or single-use plastics out of our cars or on the ground, but in a trash container at home or wherever we walk. When we throw things away, BE AWARE there is no such place as “away.” Working together we can definitely minimize the single-use plastic problem.
