F ROM THE P ASTOR : Happy New Year! May you and your family enjoy and delight in the grace of our Lord in

2014. May He surprise you with His grace in every day, in every area of your life.

"The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart

was only evil continually... So the LORD said, 'I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land... for I am sorry

that I have made them.' But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD." Genesis 6:5, 7-8

Grace is scandalously unjust. To let a criminal off the hook goes against every grain of justice in our system. But to shower him with blessings and all things good is just plain

foolish and scandalous! The intensity of our righteous fury is all of a sudden extinguished when we realize, when I realize, that I am that criminal. That when I look up at Jesus

hanging on the cross I see Him not as a helpless victim but a willing sacrifice, the Lamb of God, with my name etched on His heart. Not because I have been good, or religious,

but simply, purely because of His grace.

Someone once said that grace oozed out of the wounds of Christ. All of the religions of the world demand adherence to strict sets of rules and practices to appease their capri-

cious gods. In Christianity, it is God who takes the initiative. It was Jesus Christ who did the work. "For our sake he made him, Jesus, to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him

we might become the righteousness of God" (2 Corinthians 5:21). The judge paying the penalty for the criminal. Amazing grace! "For it is by grace you have been saved,

through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9). Scandalous grace humbly and gladly received!
