*LITANY John Smith

One: Hear the announcement the angel voices bring. All: Good News! Our savior has come! One: God offers grace and comfort to every human heart. All: We will lift up our voices and sing for joy! One: Let us tell the weary world that hope is born anew. Let us pray.

*UNISON PRAYER

Today, O God, we raise our voices together in joyous song and thankful prayer. Bless, we pray, each note of praise, each voice raised in hope, each phrase uttered in gratitude for the birth of the Christ child. Let your Spirit fill our hearts as our gratitude fills this room. As we proclaim your gift of salvation to the world, may your message of love grow in us, that our lives may ever declare the Good News. Amen.

READING FROM THE HEBREW SCRIPTURES Elizabeth B. Hipp

One: God’s message finds utterance in our midst. All: We wait and listen for God’s word to us today.

Isaiah 63:7-9

7 I will recount the gracious deeds of the LORD, the praiseworthy acts of the LORD, because of all that the LORD has done for us, and the great favor to the house of Israel that he has shown them according to his mercy, according to the abundance of his steadfast love. 8 For he said, ‘Surely they are my people, children who will not deal falsely’; and he became their savior 9 in all their distress. It was no messenger or angel but his presence that saved them; in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

RESPONSE

One: Surely we are God’s treasured children who have received steadfast love since the days of old. All: Our gracious God hears our distress and redeems us. In mercy, God has given us a savior.

CALL TO THE GOSPEL Rev. David W. Johnson

One: Silence in us, O God, any voice but your own. All: May your Word be proclaimed and received here today.

Luke 2:8-20

8 In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for see - I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: 11 to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.’ 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, 14 ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!’

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.’ 16 So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. 17 When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. 20

The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

RESPONSE One: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. All: Thanks be to God!
