Sunday Morning Seminar at NorthStarting January 12: Why Did Jesus, Moses, the Buddha, and Mohammed Cross the Road? When four religious leaders walk across the road, it’s not the beginning of a joke. It’s the start of one of the most important conversations in today’s world: Christian Identity in a Multi-Faith World. So says author Brian McLaren in this excellent study.

–– The Reverend Ms. Katherine H. Shaner, Minister of Mission

The Social Gospel

The views expressed in the recommended websites do not necessarily reflect the views of First Community Church.

I have Pope envy. There, I said it out loud. I read this term in a blog a few weeks ago and immediately decided to own the terminology. Pope Francis is just what the world has been waiting for: a Holy Father who speaks to the world with the voice of the poor.

While not a Catholic, I am a Christian, and believe our collective voices speak on behalf of the marginalized. We speak with the voice of God.

This Sunday we light the Angel’s candle signifying their announcement of “good tidings of great joy.” I can only imagine that for the millions of people around the world who live in hunger and poverty, Pope Francis’ words are not the best tidings they have heard in a long time.

Pope Francis is Time’s Person Of The Year. This was his first address after being given this distinction: http://bit.ly/19vNvSS

December 10 was International Human Rights Day. Pope Francis called for a “Prayer Wave” against hunger. http://huff.to/19aRiXQ

In November, Pope Francis released the 85-page Evangelii Gaudium or the Joy of the Gospel. Wow. http://bit.ly/18U4Y6E

Interesting conversation about breastfeeding. Yep, the Pope. http://bit.ly/1dknt3L

Giving OpportunityExpires December 31, 2013 - If you’re age 70½ or older you can make a direct contribution - up to $100,000 - from your IRA to a qualified charitable organization in 2013 without owing any income tax on the distribution. This “charitable IRA rollover” can be used to satisfy required minimum distributions.

First Community Church or First Community Foundation are qualified charitable organizations. The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (ATRA) revived this opportunity, but only for 2012 and 2013. This is a unique opportunity to pre-pay your pledge or support the missions, ministries and facilities of First Community Church. If you would like to make a charitable IRA rollover, please contact your tax consultant for the correct way to complete the transaction.

Thank you for your support of First Community Church programs.

Christmas Eve Special Offerings By Bruce Crouthamel

Your generous gifts collected at each of our Christmas Eve services this year willbe divided between Deep Griha Society and Friends of the Homeless.

Deep Griha Society is an independent, charitable organization working to better the lives of people living in the slums of Puné, India. Through a range of familywelfare programs encompassing education, health, awareness building and selfhelp projects, Deep Griha Society helps thousands of beneficiaries.

Friends of the Homeless was founded in 1983 to provide a wide range of services to help homeless adults and families move from dependency to self-sufficiency here in Columbus. This organization also provides liaison programs for mental illness, legal consultation, chemical dependency, medical treatment and a wide variety of employment services. First Community Church members provide hot meals to men in an emergency shelter each Monday evening and to women in Rebecca’s Place on Tuesday evenings.

Midweek Mission Thank You By Julie Richards

We would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the Thanksgiving Baskets we donated to the Gladden Community House. Members of the congregation helped by donating food, money and a lot of time to this project. This year, we were able to donate baskets for 33 families in need. This was a combined K-5, Middle School and High School mission effort.

The Midweek Mission children spent several weeks doing projects to make each basket special. They decorated the baskets, put together recipe books, wrote notes to each family and painted trivets as an extra gift to include in each basket. Their insight and thoughtfulness throughout the project was impressive, to say the least.

A special thanks to April Howe, Amy Gray and Jason Poling for giving so much of their time to our fall session. We are also grateful to everyone who came along to deliver the baskets including: the Snyder, Berens, Lenhart, Sandstrom and Schoning families. Thanks also to Kendal Glasser, Riley Cunningham, Jenna Robison and Ellie McClarren for their help.

This entire experience was one where while giving to others, we in turn received so much. For more information about K-5 Midweek Missions, contact Julie Richards at [email protected]
