Simone festival dates announcedby Samantha Hurst

Momentum behind the organization of a music festival in honor of Tryon native and music legend Nina Simone continues to grow with the announcement of festival dates.

Organizers announced recently that The Nina Simone World Music Festival will be held Sept. 9-11, 2011.

Eunice Waymon – Nina Simone Memorial Project Executive Director Crys Armbrust an-ticipates the event serving as a true testament to Simone’s own musical breadth.

“This will be perhaps as diverse a music festival as you will ever encounter because we aim to bring local, regional, national and international artists to converge on multiple stages throughout Tryon,” Armbrust said.

Simone herself is recognized for her skillful performance of any number of genres – jazz, gospel, classical, blues, spiritual and folk.

“She is an artist unlike any other. For the whole of her performance career no one could accurately categorize her – she literally did all musical forms,” Armbrust said of Nina Simone. “What I find absolutely compelling is how she defined herself as a musician and a performer…. She said, ‘What I am is a folk singer.’”

One special festival guest can attest to Logo for The Nina Simone World Music Festival, which will be held in Tryon Sept. 9-11, 2011.

Owens dedicates service to Earl Foyby Leah Justice

Polk County Commissioner Ted Owens dedicated his recent swearing-in to the late Earl Foy, former county commissioner, who passed away this year.

Owens was sworn into of-fice earlier this month. During the ceremony, he said 26 years ago he was sworn in as com-missioner along with Foy, one of the best commissioners ever to serve Polk County.

“To be honest, if it hadn’t been for Earl and Ruth, his wife, I would not have been standing there getting sworn in,” Owens said. “On September 22 of this year, Earl went to be with his Heavenly Father and tonight I dedicate my swearing in to com-missioner Earl Foy, one of the best commissioners to ever serve the citizens of Polk County.”

Owens presented flowers and pictures to Foy’s wife, Ruth,

during his swearing in ceremony. Owens also invited Pastor David Turner of Cooper’s Gap Baptist Church to lead the county in prayer to keep in tradition with 26 years ago and Owens also read Romans 12:3-8.

Foy was a commissioner from 1984 to 1986. His brothers, Jesse and Fred Foy also served as county commissioner.

Owens said Earl Foy cared for people of this county and didn’t discriminate for any reason.

“Earl loved and respected all the folks of this county no matter if their skin was white, black, yel-low or polka dot,” said Owens.

Earl Foy served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He retired from McLean Trucking in Spar-tanburg, S.C., and was also a landscaper. He was a former Polk County commissioner, a member of Woodmen of the World, delivered Meals on Wheels, helped his two daughters with Girl Scouts and the Tryon High School band, volun-teered with the Blue Ridge Barbe-cue & Music Festival and decorated his church at Christmas.

Foy was also a dedicated member of the Polk County Republican Party and the Con-gregational Church of Christ in Tryon, where he had served as a deacon.

Foy was 84 when he died and had been married to Ruth Pace Foy for 61 years.

Polk County Republican Party Chairwoman Cheryl Ev-ery said Foy dedicated his life

to his country, community and people in need.

“(Foy’s) life was about service to his country, his community, and to those in need,” Every said. “He did all of those things without fanfare or seeking atten-tion to his service or accomplish-ments. He was just always there. No matter what anyone needed, Earl volunteered to help. He was the first one to show up and the last one to turn out the lights and

lock the door.”Owens spoke of Foy’s con-

servatism and love of his fam-ily. He said he remembers every time the county manager wanted to spend money, Foy would ask why it was needed.

“Most all people that run for elected office claim to be con-servative,” Owens said. “I have too. But I’ve never met anyone

Earl Foy (left), with his brothers Jesse Foy (middle) and Fred Foy (at right) outside the Polk County Republican Headquarters. All of them served as Polk County commissioners. (photo submitted)

else that was as conservative and cared about the taxpayers of this county as Earl did.”

“Most of all Earl loved his family,” Owens said.

Owens said Earl and Ruth Foy thought nothing of jumping in the car to visit their daughter, Dr. Jane Foy Arnold and her family in Tampa, Fla. Their other daughter, Janet Foy Sauve, and

her family live in Tryon. A philosophy Owens said Foy

lived by was that Foy promised to take care of the taxpayers’ money as if it were his own.

Owens ended his swearing-in ceremony this month by saying he plans to live by Foy’s philoso-phy as commissioner.

“With God’s help I plan to follow Earl’s philosophy to the letter,” said Owens. “I’ll handle the county’s money as if it were my own.”

Simone’s love for all things musical. Simone’s daughter, Simone, who recently produced an album entitled “Simone on Simone” covering 14 of her mother’s songs, has agreed to perform at the event. Simone also possesses extensive Broad-way theater credits for leading roles in “Jesus Christ Super-star,” “Rent” and “Aida.”

“She is an incredible vocal-ist working now on her second and third albums,” Armbrust said.

He said he was particularly excited about Simone’s addi-tion, as well as several other internationally acclaimed mem-bers of the music community.

Joseph Jennings, Grammy- award-winning music director of the a cappella group Chan-ticleer, has agreed to perform with one or more of his ensem-bles. He also recently joined the music festival committee.

“His contribution will bring a great deal of solid musical presence to the festival,” Arm-brust said.

The partnership came about by Jennings leading Armbrust’s own composition of a male chorus performance of Squire Parson’s “Sweet Beulah Land” on the East Coast. Jennings led the premier of Armbrust’s work in San Francisco two years ago.

Another addition, according to the project website, is that of entrepreneur David Nathan, “the British Ambassador of Soul.” Nathan published the book “The Soulful Divas,” a collection of personal portraits of musical divas, including Nina Simone, Aretha Frank-lin and Patti LaBelle. Nathan and his sister, Sylvia, also co-authored the first biography of

Simone, “Nina Simone: Break Down and Let It All Out” in 2004.

Armbrust said, “Nathan’s deep immersion in the music industry and his broad experi-ence at multiple levels within the industry will prove invalu-able as the Simone Project [continues planning] for the upcoming Nina Simone Music Festival.”

Armbrust said the commit-tee of organizers sees the occa-sion as a forum for community building.

He said it would not only bring together people of simi-lar performance interest but also those of similar listening taste.

The launching of The Nina Simone World Music Festival completes the last of three main aims for The Eunice Way-mon – Nina Simone Memorial Project. The first two included establishing scholarships for talented students and com-missioning the creation of a Nina Simone memorial statue, which now sits in downtown Tryon.

The Eunice Waymon—Nina Simone Memorial Project is currently seeking both sponsors and underwriters for the Nina Simone World Music Festival. For more information, visit http://ninasimoneproject.org.

District Attorney Hunt speaks at Polk County High

Recently N.C. District Attor-ney Jeff Hunt addressed Susan Collins’ class of juniors and seniors at Polk County High School.

The class engages in a Moot Court case each year; and Hunt with Assistant District Attorney Doug Mundy delivered a pro-gram on our court system, the district attorney’s role and some procedural suggestions.

In early December Hunt ad-dressed the Henderson County University Club at the Hender-sonville Country Club. Having addressed this group last year covering the role of North Caro-lina district attorneys and the court system; this year Hunt’s topic was: “The United States and North Carolina Constitu-tions, the court system therein established and the capitalist

economy our founders intend-ed.”

As district attorney, Hunt makes himself available to speak on prosecutorial and court related topics. He addresses school classes, civic clubs and sometimes adult church Sunday schools. He believes it is impor-tant for the elected district attor-ney to continually interface with our community members in and out of the courtroom in order to keep apprised of our communi-ties’ standards and priorities.

Hunt received a B.A. in eco-nomics from Wake Forest Uni-versity and his law degree from Wake Forest School of Law.

He is available for speaking engagements and can be con-tacted at his offices in the Tran-sylvania, Polk and Henderson county courthouses.

First Peak Visitor Center in Columbus seeks volunteers

If you’ve received great direc-tions or recommendations from a visitor center while on a trip, then you know what an impact it can have on your day – and your memories.

The First Peak Visitor Center needs volunteers who can do just that for Polk County and the sur-rounding area. If you know your way around Polk County or want to know the area better, then you’re just what they are looking for.

The First Peak Visitor Center offers volunteers the opportunity to connect with travelers and new-comers to tell them about all the at-tractions, places to stay, restaurants and the unique collection of gal-leries, shops and other businesses in the area.

In addition to helping our guests, there is light office work

such as folding printed materials, stuffing envelopes and data entry. There are opportunities to staff information tables at area events. And, the center could use help car-ing for its flowerbeds so they look healthy and beautiful.

No two days are the same and the center’s needs vary. You can come once a month or once a week - the schedule is flexible. The center needs help on Saturdays and on occasional weekdays when it is short-staffed, so flexibility is help-ful. Training will be provided.

If you’re curious, give the cen-ter a call to learn about the possi-bilities. Call 828-894-2324 or stop by The First Peak Visitor Center, located at 20 E. Mills Street in Columbus on the corner of Walker St. and Highway 108.

Letter to the Editor

Firing of Thwing heartless actionTo the Editor:

As a past president, board member and volunteer of Thermal Belt Outreach I am very disturbed and concerned about the heart-less action taken by the present Board of Directors in firing Eloise Thwing.

Church Women United was responsible for the formation of a church- and community-based organization to provide services to people in need. This organi-zation was called the Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry. The Columbus United Methodist Church donated the use of one of its rooms for the operation of the new organization.

Fran Ruethvan Bridges was the director for a very short time before she moved out of state. Eloise was elected to become the new director and she devoted her life to constantly enlarging the scope of outreach in the com-munity.

I once introduced her at a gen-eral meeting as “our own Mother Teresa.” She saw a need and im-mediately sought the necessary funding to attain a solution. She worked closely with other service organizations and made Outreach a vital and necessary part of serv-ing the elderly, single parents, children, anyone in need of food and those in dire circumstances.

I am not privy to the underly-ing problems that forced the is-sue, but couldn’t they have been handled in a more humane way?

Eloise deserves plaudits and thanks by everyone in this area. How are you planning to recog-nize her years of tireless service, devotion and many, many ac-complishments?

Letter to the Editor

Coop not coup flock of foul fools To the Editor:

Coup: Noun, A brilliantly ex-ecuted stratagem; a triumph.

As in a coup d’état; or a sud-den appropriation of leadership or power; a takeover: a boardroom coup.

Coop: Noun, residence of chickens.

Regarding article by Leah Jus-tice re: Chicken Coups blocked within the city limits of Landrum:

The City of Landrum Delivered a Bold Coup to Owners of Chicken COOPS.

Do you proofread articles be-fore they are sent to press?

Kindly encourage use of Spellcheck and Roget’s Thesaurus, to avert such misuse of language, thereby having the TDB reading and looking like a flock of fowl fools.

Grammatically Yours. -- Debra Halbornothers

Skills of rescue workers ... really? To the Editor:

After reading about the upset of the “annual” testing done on our counties First Responders/Volunteers in the Tryon Daily Bulletin, two thoughts came to mind.

One, I believe it is great to give our brains a challenge to expand our knowledge and skills, especially in the medical field where we touch so many lives. The healthcare field is forever changing and upgrades are necessary to maintain a higher standard of care. As a healthcare provider, I know it is extremely vital to stay abreast of new developments as well as keeping refreshed on the skills we have learned from the beginning.

It is also important to have leaders that direct the health army, if you will, to overcome the battles by providing the proper information, ammuni-tion, and support needed to get the job done. This brings me to my second thought.

The “altered” test may have been a wake up call, but I hope the publicized failed results does not come at the expense of the reputation of others. The failures or success for that mat-ter, does not rest entirely on the shoulders of the ones who took the test. Obviously, continuous exercising of teamwork and leadership in unison will gain the overall positive results. There is a lot of information to retain, requiring all of us to pull it together, including the public.

To our First Responders/Volunteers, do not be discour-aged, never give up, continue upgrading your education and skills as required and keep showing up, we appreciate you!

— Debbie Hedgepath

published many of my letters on a variety of subjects.

In some cases my writing has stimulated lively debate and letters of response among your readers.

I am an old soldier, and will fade away in the next few weeks.

Before I do, I want to thank you for providing me with a fo-rum for my views and opinions and to tell your readers that I have always enjoyed the repartee and conversation.

So now, I paraphrase other old soldiers: my work is done, my course on earth is run; I bid you farewell.

-- Col. Charles Coolidge Ross, US Army, retired

Sunny View Elem. awarded USDA fresh fruit, vegetable grant

Sunny View Elementary School was recently awarded a USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable grant for the 2010-2011 school year. The primary purpose of the grant is to promote healthier food choices by introducing a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables as daily snacks for students and helping teachers incorporate nutrition education in lesson plans.

Sunny View students have sampled several varieties of fruits and vegetables that they had never even heard of, like dragon fruit, pluots and broc-colini. Most kids say they have enjoyed the assortment of new

tastes and have asked parents to include some of them on their next shopping lists.

Sunny View teachers are not only incorporating nutrition education into their daily les-son plans; they are modeling healthy eating habits by sharing the treats. The cafeteria staff has committed to helping order and prepare the snacks three times per week.

While the grant will provide the snacks for the remainder of this year, it is the goal that the ex-posure to healthy alternatives will lead to better eating habits and a fit Sunny View community.
