SUNDAY

SACRED HEARTS PARISH THE ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUNE 17, 2018

POINTS TO PONDER Reflect on Sunday’s readings: Ezekiel 17:22-24; 2 Corinthians 5:6-10; Mark 4:26-34

• Have you seen examples of “small seeds” someone unconsciously “planted” that resulted in an unexpected harvest for the good of others?

• Has your life ever been changed by a simple, small “mustard-seed-like” act of kindness or care?

• What does gardening and the planting and nurturing of seeds teach us about everyday life?

Sacred Hearts Parish is on Facebook!

https://www.facebook.com/sacredheartsbradford/ “Like” us. You will be able to keep up with all our events.

Heavenly Father, You entrusted your Son, Jesus, the child of Mary, to the care of Joseph, an earthly father. Bless all fathers as they care for their families. Amen

A FATHER'S DAY REFLECTION FOR 2018: ONE GRAND AND GLORIOUS DAY: by Barry Mooers

I will never forget the summer of 1966; particularly that grand and glorious day when my grandfather set out to make me a fisherman.

J. Roland Harrigan lived in a trim bungalow on Burke Street, two streets from St. James Cemetery in the dead center of the Acre. A

craggy, cursing curmudgeon, my grandfather, worked fifty hours a week at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and tended his vegetable

garden when he got home. His face was scorched from the sun and scored with scars he'd picked up from various spats and scrapes. His

voice was harsh and raspy from his endless caravan of unfiltered Camels. Were you to drop in on him, you'd find an open bottle of

Jameson on the kitchen counter and a case of 'Gansett in the fridge. If you were lucky, you might find half of a rappie pie on top of the

stove; rappie -- that delicious casserole chock full of grated potatoes and chunks of pork which was Grampa's culinary masterpiece.

Except for his beloved beagle Skippy, he lived by himself.

It was arranged that we would go deep sea fishing on the first Saturday in June, and so around six o'clock that morning he picked me

up. My grandfather favored checkerboard flannel shirts and grease-stained Dickeys, but he was always partial to late model Buick

LeSabres. As we headed down Route 113 towards Newburyport, we shared a bag of Ken's doughnuts -- doughnuts twice the size and

twice as good as any you can buy anywhere today! We arrived at the dock at seven sharp. We got the fishing rods, tackle and other

paraphernalia out of the trunk and grabbed a handle of the cooler crammed with ice cold beers for him and soda for me. Once everyone

was on board, we headed out to sea. It was a clear and crisp June day, blue skies overhead and a fair and following sea. After about a

half an hour, the boat made its first stop. Chum was thrown overboard and the anglers baited their hooks, hoping to catch haddock,

pollack, mackerel or flounder. Grampa began teaching me the basics of using rod and reel -- the firm grip of a grizzled grandfather

steadying the faltering grasp of his greenhorn grandson.

There was no lunchtime on the boat. You ate when you were hungry and you drank when you were dry. (It struck me that there was

much more thirst than hunger on that boat that day!) Around noon I decided to eat. My mother had made me an egg salad sandwich,

and given me a bag of chips, some Oreos and a bottle of Moxie. The sandwich went down smoothly enough as did the first few swigs of

soda. But, then, the smell of the diesel fuel, the stench of the chum and the swell of the waves turned my stomach upside down. Before I

knew it, my head was overboard, along with my lunch. I'd turned green around the gills! My fellow fishermen were sympathetic to my

plight, no doubt having undergone the same ordeal themselves. Grampa sent me below decks to calm my queasy stomach, but I found

that lying down just made matters worse.

I made a nice recovery later that afternoon and actually managed to haul in my first catch -- a seven pound pollack. When we docked

at 4:30, I was both exhausted and exhilarated. Grampa snapped a picture of me holding my fish. I don't know who was prouder -- him

or me! We went fishing several more times that summer. By its end, I knew how to bait a hook, cast properly, reel in my catch and --

ugh!-- even how to clean it! I found myself looking forward to next summer and more angling adventures with my grandfather.

Then, in May of 1967, Grampa suffered a massive heart attack. I will never forget the night we learned of his death. I sat on our

kitchen linoleum cradling Skippy, a dog mourning his missing master, a boy grieving the loss of his grandfather. Grampa's dog would

now become my dog -- a canine connection between grandfather and grandson. There would be no chance to thank him for all he'd done

for me; for all he'd been to me. I would never go fishing again.

It's been over a half a century since my grandfather's passing. I am as old now as he was then. He was rough and he was tough and

he was gruff; yet, there was a tender spot in my grandfather's heart that I had somehow managed to reach and touch. Today, as we

celebrate Father's Day, give whomever is a Grampa Harrigan in your life your biggest hug. If you can't, give him safe shelter in the

harbor of your heart. Someday, you'll see him again. Won't that be one grand and glorious day?

DID YOU KNOW? Did you know that the implement the priest or deacon uses to sprinkle us with holy water is known as an aspergillum? The word comes from the Latin asperges which means “to sprinkle.” Its liturgical meaning comes from the first word in the 9th verse of Psalm 51, which in our English language Bibles translates to “cleanse me,” and which is often sung during the sprinkling rite. Aspergillums come in three forms; they can be a perforated ball on a short handle, a brush-type implement, or even a small leafy branch. All three are dipped into Holy Water and then shaken to disperse the water over whomever or whatever is being blessed. An aspersorium is the vessel which holds the Holy Water into which the aspergillum is dipped. The use of Holy Water always recalls the waters of Baptism and our own baptismal promises to reject Satan and his works and to repent of our sins.

At the Eighth Grade Class Night, awards were presented to Sacred Hearts students who participated in the 2018 CDA National Education Contest by Court Sacred Hearts #864 Regent, Monique Rolfe, and Court Education
