The 11th Annual Advanced Practice Conference is aimed at educating health care providers on a variety of topics specific to the pediatric population.

Information gained will help providers broaden their scope of knowledge in a variety of areas including the psychology of technology, mental illness in the foster care population, adolescent medicine, celiac disease, food allergies with an update in recent peanut recommendations, metabolic syndrome in pediatrics, chest wall anomalies and an antibiotic update.

The purpose of this conference is to enhance the knowledge of the health care professional working in the area of pediatrics by addressing a wide variety of topics focused on pediatric specialties in an effort to improve the delivery of safe and up-to-date care to this vulnerable population.

Course ObjectivesAs a result of attending this conference, attendees will be able to:

• Discuss the relationship between the use of technology and neurodevelopment as well as mood/personality disorders.

• Examine the relationship between foster care placement as a predictor of mental illness.

• Identify counseling methods for teens to reduce the risk and negative health consequences associated with adolescent sexual behaviors.

• Explain the risk factors, pathophysiology and clinical presentation of celiac disease.

• Recognize appropriate antibiotic treatment and antibiotic resistance patterns.

• Describe the diagnostic evaluation for food allergies, and treatments if any.

• Discuss the main types of chest wall anomalies as well as treatment options for pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum.

• Recognize symptoms of metabolic syndrome in pediatrics and options for prevention and treatment.

WHO SHOULD ATTENDNurse practitioners, physician assistants, clinical nurse specialists, registered nurses, and allied health professionals within primary care, acute care and specialty roles.

Keynote Speaker: L. MARK CARRIER, PH.D.

Dr. L. Mark Carrier is a Professor and past chair in the Department of Psychology at California State University in Dominguez Hills. He has been teaching and conducting research in the field of psychology for over 20 years.

Dr. Carrier is a co-founder and director of the George Marsh Applied Cognition Laboratory where he researches applied cognition, psychology and technology, and cultural effects on thinking. He is the co-author, with Larry Rosen and Nancy Cheever, of both iDisorder: Understanding Our Obsession with Technology and Overcoming Its Hold on Us (2012) and Rewired: Understanding the iGeneration and the Way they Learn (2010).

ACCREDITATION

This program is being planned in accordance with AAPA’s CME Standards for Live Programs and for Commercial Support of Live Programs.

Credit Designation (CME) - This program has been reviewed and is approved for a maximum of 12.00 AAPA Category 1 CME credit by the Physician Assistant Review Panel. PAs should claim only those hours actually spent participating in the CME activity.

Credit Designation (CNE) - Children’s Health is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association – Approver, an accredited approver by The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Contact hours will be awarded.

Conflict of Interest - It is the policy of AAPA and Children’s Health that participants in CME and CNE activities should be made aware of any affiliation of financial interest that may affect the speakers’ presentations. Each speaker has completed and signed a conflict of interest statement. This will be disclosed at the beginning of each presentation.
