Drive to be greenAs part of our efforts to shrink our environmental footprint, we’re adding new plug-in hybrid electric bucket trucks to our eet.

Each truck’s features reduce emissions and allow for quieter operation. While traveling, the vehicle uses a fuel-ef cient clean diesel engine. The plug-in hybrid system powers the boom and other functions without running the engine.

Considering an electric vehicle for your next car purchase? We can help you understand more about this environmentally friendly and energy-ef cient technology. Visit rockymountainpower.net/ev.

Energy ef ciency success

In 2015, with our Wyoming customers, we saved enough electricity to power nearly 3,800 homes for a year.

Saving energy reduces emissions and keeps electricity costs low. Our award-winning energy ef ciency programs help avoid or delay the need for new power plants and facilities.

Plugging into wind and sun

Our company ranks as the second-largest rate-regulated utility owner of wind resources in the U.S. We’re adding 1,000 megawatts of solar and wind capacity through long-term power purchase agreements.

Modernizing the gridTo more effectively

integrate renewable resources, we are leading the way to transform the electric grid in the West. These efforts also work to lower costs and enhance reliability.

For the environment, with respect

Our strong commitment to protect and enhance the environment plays an essential role in our work to serve you with safe, reliable electricity and new ideas.

Blue Sky customers make a difference

Thanks to the more than 106,600 customers who are enrolled in our Blue SkySM renewable energy program. Together, we’re creating environmental bene ts equivalent to taking 87,600 cars off the road for a year!

Rocky Mountain Power has also awarded more than $9.4 million to 140 renewable energy projects in our communities on behalf of Blue Sky customers. Projects have been installed at schools, libraries, food banks, re stations and more.

Smart solutions savepaper and resources

With 31 percent of our customers now choosing paperless billing, we are saving more than 267,000 pounds of paper envelopes and bills each year.

Our switch to reusable bill statement envelopes is conserving 3,216 trees and 3.7 million gallons of water annually. It’s also saving electricity equal to the annual use of 62 homes.

What can you do?

Keep kids safeBefore you send the kids out for springtime fun, give them these important safety reminders:

• Stay out of substations and away from power lines.

• Don’t climb power poles or trees with power lines overhead.

• Never retrieve a ball or toy from inside a substation.

• Never y kites around power lines.

• Seek shelter indoors during thunderstorms.

• Keep electrical devices away from water.

• Don’t play on or dig near pad-mounted transformers (big, green metal boxes found in neighborhoods and parks).

To learn more, visit rockymountainpower.net/safety.

As the weather turns milder, you may notice crews out pruning trees – or maybe you are considering pruning or planting trees on your own property.

To stay safe, take note of the location of overhead power lines. Never prune limbs or remove trees near power lines – please call us for help. Don’t forget underground power lines when planting: call 811 at least 48 hours before digging to have underground utilities located for free.

When planting trees remember to plant trees away from overhead power lines. Some trees may be placed adjacent to power lines, but trees that grow taller than 25 feet need distance.

For ef ciency, plant deciduous trees facing southeast and southwest for summer shade and winter sun. You

can reduce your cooling needs in the summer by up to 20 percent.

Think safety from the ground up

There’s a lot of similarity in how a coal-fueled power plant and a wind farm operate – at least to a project manager. Travis Harkins has served in that capacity for both types of electric generation facilities at Rocky Mountain Power.

“The thermal plants have come a long way, and we’ve invested a lot of money to operate cleaner,” Harkins said. “It’s great to be part of a company that is moving forward in technology.”

Harkins currently manages major projects and maintenance activities at Rocky Mountain Power’s eight wind sites in three states – 695 wind turbines in all, capable of generating 1,037 megawatts of electricity.

Harkins said he will never forget his rst view after climbing a wind tower near Glenrock, Wyoming.

“You’re looking out over the land, and you can see so far. All the turbine’s rotors were turning and you could hear this big swoosh sound.”

How a wind manager sees it
