OHIO PTA PRESIDENT 2015 - 2017: SHEILA RAGLAND

It has been a while since the whole Family has come home !!!

I want to invite you to be a part of our Ohio PTA Homecoming. The state convention is from April 28th - 30th. We will have exciting speakers, informative workshops, many exhibi-tors, and much more. You’ll also be able to meet your Ohio PTA Board of Directors, help shape the future of Ohio PTA by participating in the business meetings, and find out how

you can be a greater part of our PTA Family.

We are excited to offer a special incentive for you to attend – BOGO – Buy One Convention Registration, Get One Free! That’s right, one registration free with every purchased registration. We feel as though what is shared and accomplished at our annual convention is so important, that we want to provide a way for you to bring your officers, chairpersons, administrators, teachers, friends, and families to take advantage of all of the resources, training, and sharing.

NATIONAL PTA PRESIDENT 2015-2017: LAURA BAY

Laura Bay was installed as president of National PTA at the 2015 National PTA Convention and Expo. From 2013-2015, Bay served as president-elect of the association. Prior to her election, she served a two-year term as secretary-treasurer and served on the National PTA Board of Directors as well as the finance, field service and organizational viability com-mittees. Bay is a passionate advocate for education and children’s issues and believes that PTA is the organization which actively supports and promotes parent, teacher and commu-

nity involvement in child and education issues.

Ever since entering a kindergarten classroom with her oldest son more than 20 years ago, Bay’s dedication to PTA has become a passion. Bay was involved in local unit, council and regional PTA activities for many years and served in a variety of PTA positions—from committee member/chair to president. She was also an active parent at each school building and at the district level—serving as a parent voice at staff meetings and on budget committees.

Bay believes that the power of this association is found in the passionate and diverse volunteers who share a common desire to reach out and engage parents, support their community in voicing their needs concerning education and health and safety issues and grow as leaders prepared to advocate anywhere, at any time.

As the Washington State PTA president in 2007–2009, Bay focused on developing leadership potential at all levels of PTA and facilitated the search and hiring of a new executive director. Also, during her tenure as president she led the Washington State PTA in collaborating with other organizations in the successful pas-sage of Engrossed House Joint Resolution (EHJR) 4204—Simple Majority Initiative. She also provided testimo-ny before state senate and house committees, led a rally on the capitol steps and dedicated her time and en-ergy in a statewide PTA campaign which led to the signing of HB 2261 (Basic Education Funding) with fellow education stake-holder organizations.

Bay and her husband Robert Bay have three adult children—Andrew, Matthew and Celeste. She has worked for the Bremerton School District as an educator and currently works in the district office as a coordinator for assessment and instruction. Bay and her husband make their home in Poulsbo, Washington where they enjoy time with family and friends.

JEFFREY STEC - GENERAL SESSION 1 KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Citizens for Civic Renewal, Executive Director

Jeffrey L. Stec graduated from the University of Michigan Law School and practiced law for eight years before becoming a community development professional. Since 2010, Jeffrey has worked extensively with school districts to build productive relationships between parents, community members, and staff.

"The PTA's Role in Transforming Education"

Along with 15 years of diverse community leadership and teaching roles, Jeffrey L. Stec, J.D. has spent the last five years facilitating a community engagement program for Lakota Schools -- and he's noticed a big disconnect between what people want from traditional public education and what they are getting (even in highly rated districts like Lakota!). His keynote address will explore how the PTA can tap into this latent community yearning to both transform education and reinvig-orate your PTA.

This will be followed by a workshop, "How to Engage Parents, Staff and Students by Creating a School Mission Statement."

HOW TO ENGAGE PARENTS, STAFF AND STUDENTS BY CREATING A SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT

There are many ways to engage parents in school and PTA, but creating a school mission statement holds a special power to unite and inspire parents, staff and students alike. Using community engagement principles to build a school mission will inspire participa- tion in PTA, and serve as a launching pad for educational experiments that better meet student needs. This workshop will explore why your PTA should consider leading your school community in a mission-building process, and how you can do it without profess- sional help.

RESOLUTIONS AS A PART OF YOUR PTA Using two of the newest National PTA resolutions, we will go through a step-by-step pro- cess for introducing a resolution, then have participants break into two groups to give ideas on how they would bring these forward to their units/council. Also, this workshop will look at the difference between a board position statement and resolution.

THE BUSINESS OF PTAS This workshop provides an overview of PTA board roles, President and other officers, insurance importance and Standards of Affiliation.
