About IHAA About IHAA About IHAA About IHAA The International Hard Anodizing Association was formed in 1989 and is an organization of companies engaged in the production of hard anodized finishes on aluminum components, either for customers or for their own products. Other "associate" members may be manufacturers of semi-fabricated aluminum, companies engaged in supplying chemicals and processes or plant and equipment to the hard-anodizing industry, or companies which are users of hard anodized components and products but do not have their own anodizing facility.

Symposium OverviewSymposium OverviewSymposium OverviewSymposium Overview Users of aluminum, hard anodizing companies and researchers will meet in Seattle in 2018 to discuss the latest trends and solutions for the aluminum surface treatment industry. The bi-annual technical symposium is an event for anyone who uses aluminum for technical applications. Our comprehensive symposium includes an opening-night cocktail reception and dinner, plus two full days of scientific and process-related presentations with a focus on functional oxide layers on aluminum parts. In addition to the technical presentations, a variety of networking activities are arranged to continue discussions with colleagues.

Optimum hard anodize quality relies on the quality of the mill finish extrusion. Several key extrusion parameters ranging from the alloys selection to the heat treatments can affect the profiles quality and their respond to the anodizing process. The presentation will provide an understanding of the effects of tempers on anodize response, variations within designated alloys and effects of the aluminum surface finish conditions generated by the extrusion process to prevent defects.

Gallen, Switzerland The anodization of aluminium alloys 2024 and 2219 with a high copper content is difficult to achieve in conventional processes. High alloyed aluminium materials or cast products are prevalent used in automotive, aerospace and engineering industry. Especially the 2000 aluminium material group has high copper contents and the trend of material “burning” during the anodizing process. But these aluminium alloys often used because of their high strength and high temperature resistant material properties.

Three years ago, we started the research of sulfuric acid anodizing of the high alloyed aluminium materials 2024 and 2219. The intention of the project was the development of a high-speed anodizing process with high deposition rates and good oxide layer quality under “easy to handle” production conditions. At the IHAA conference 2016 we showed the growth of the oxide layer and the integration of the intermetallic phases. Oxide layers of 40µm can be realized with deposition rates of 4-6µm/min. A rectifier simply needs to convert the existing AC power into a stable DC power in the most efficient way, to keep the energy cost and as a result the operation cost low. It all sounds very simple so it must be a simple product. But it is like if we try to copy nature it looks simple but…Robustness, a given fact of the past, is not always ensured today anymore. New power conversion circuits open up new avenues and create new challenges to the power grid and you as the user. A modular design just used to boost the output power is not achieving a higher

system reliability and more hours of operation. However instead of a technical discourse an update is provided of what is out there for you when it comes to rectifiers and controls today. How can the technical evolution in power conversion help you to save cost? How can the new IoT ready automation systems help you to save money? Rectifiers and process controllers can support you not only to make your process and your results more stable but also to support you to collect process data to provide the data you might need to do even better.

Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is a fast and efficient process in which dense oxide coatings are obtained on light metals in appropriate electrolytes. Micro-discharges which randomly appear over the sample’s surface during PEO processing are considered as the main contributor to the oxidation and protective layer growth. Oxide coatings obtained by PEO are usually characterized during the growth using optical emission spectroscopy and potential-time measurements. AFM, SEM/EDS, XRD, and XPS are employed to investigate the morphology, chemical and phase composition of obtained oxide coatings. Structural, chemical, and mechanical properties of obtained oxide coatings are strongly correlated to PEO time and electrolyte composition.

Aluminum corrosion is commonly encountered when performing chemical process operations involving surface finishing, predominantly in preparation for paint application. The protective oxide film of aluminum is only stable in a pH range of 4.5 -8.5. However, many process solutions intentionally exceed this pH range for the purpose of cleaning, metal removal and subsequent smut removal. These process solutions are formulated so as not to cause deleterious pitting or preferential etching. However, the susceptibility of aluminum to pitting depends on many extraneous factors, such as chloride ion concentration, pH control and initial surface condition. Electrochemical measurements via potentiodynamic scans have

been shown to be an effective tool in analyzing the propensity of certain process solutions to contribute to observed pitting conditions. In this paper, a review of several process solutions, examining coolants, solvent cleaning, alkaline clean/etch and deoxidizing/desmutting, listing intended and unintended chemical reactions along with possible mechanisms that would favor corrosion formation. Further explanation is provided for the role of incoming water that is used for process solution make-up and the myriad of rinse tanks. Recommendations are provided for electrolytic processes that might be prone to stray currents affecting auxiliary equipment and thereby introducing deleterious contaminants into process solutions as a result of the corrosion products of compromised piping, fittings and fasteners from heating and cooling units. Strict adherence to process specification controls, regular monitoring of suspect contaminants, sound housekeeping and part handling best practices can alleviate many aluminum part processing corrosion occurrences.

Medical device application of color anodized aluminium requires that the finish withstand multiple sterilization treatments. STERRAD™ sterilization subjects parts to a highly oxidative environment that often results in color fade. The results of an investigation carried out on a variety or organic and inorganic colors sealed by six methods using conventional technologies will be presented.

Initial experiments were performed to measure the morphology evolution of corrosion pits in three dimensions (3D) using ex situ Xray Computed Microtomography (XCMT) techniques. Small 2024 Aluminum alloy coupons were immersed for 4 hours in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution at freely corroding conditions, removed from solution, dried, and scanned in a Zeiss Versa 520 XCMT microscope to measure the geometry of the corrosion pits in 3D. This process was repeated for a minimum of three cycles to measure the evolution

of the pit shapes over time. The specimens are stored in a desiccator when they are not being scanned. 2024 Aluminum was selected due to its accelerated pit formation and growth kinetics. The coupons were approximately 12.5 mm x 12.5 mm x 1.3 mm and the corrosion was limited to the square faces by coating the edges with a water resistant sealant. The initiation and growth of individual pits were monitored and measured. There is a possibility to inform anodizing strategies for mitigation of pit initiation events leading to catastrophic failure based on the findings from this study and ones like it.

The Alodine 1200 coating is undeniably effective in terms of corrosion resistance and has therefore seen extensive use in the Danish industry, e.g. the aerospace industry. However, the coating relies heavily on the toxic Cr(VI), thus demanding a replacement. This study examines the environmental impact of hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), which is commonly found in aluminum coatings. It aims to investigate alternative coatings free of Cr(VI), as the RoHS-directive severely restricts its usage within the European Union as of July 1, 2006. The directive covers a wide range of applications and includes Cr(VI) due to its significant toxic and carcinogenic properties, which firmly assign the

element the highest priority for elimination.

This paper discusses a series of tests in order to identify the strengths and weaknesses of a selection of aluminum coatings absent of Cr(VI). The tests employ specimens of three different alloys, namely the EN AW-2017, EN AW-6082 and EN AW-7075 alloys. The aforementioned selection of coatings includes Gardobond X 4707, E-CLPS 4600, ChromitAL TCP and Sol-Gel CORE 030, as well as Alodine 1200 for the benefit of comparisons. Additionally, the study evaluates the five coatings in terms of environmental impact and health concerns.

Much of the success that has sustained the anodizing industry is based in effective tribal knowledge and empirical data. Consequently, there is little scientific information that supports the understanding and engineering of anodizing and follow-on processes of dyeing and sealing. This presentation provides explanations for some of the critical side reactions that impact oxide performance quality, which occur during anodizing and afterwards, during follow-on operations such as rinsing, dyeing and sealing. Key process parameters of temperature, electrolyte concentration, anode-cathode spacing and agitation are addressed.
