Masebo joins PF

SYLVIA Masebo yesterday joined the opposition Patriotic Front, along with severalChongwe MMD district officials and declared that she would re-contest the Chongwe

parliamentary seat on the PF ticket.And PF leader Michael Sata says Masebo is a very honest and hardworking person.Announcing her move at a mammoth PF rally in Chongwe yesterday, Masebo who isMMD area member of parliament said she could not withstand the hatred PresidentRupiah Banda harboured against her.

Masebo declared that her joining PF marked the end of the MMD in Chongwe district.

It is a special day for Chongwe because today we are going to bury MMD here inChongwe. And mark my words; MMD is now finished in Chongwe. Your Excellency, MrMichael Chilufya Sata, I feel so proud.

I feel so relieved to announce today that Im a member of the PF and part of the Sataacademy. I think for those of you that know me, those who have known my politicalcareer you can even see that today Im Sylvia Masebo myself.

And very relaxed among people who have accepted me as a fellow human beingcapable of working for the good of the people of Zambia; not being in a party where youare being treated like a leper by people who were brought from a farm by the latepresidentLevy Mwanawasa. And may his soul rest in peace but he left us problems inthis country, Masebo said amidst ululation and heavy drumming from the crowd.

A Head of State is not supposed to have such hate, harbouring hate for a citizen. Itis unbelievable to see how a Head of State can have so much hatred for a simplewoman, a simple Soli woman like me who has nothing.Masebo said President Banda had not done anything in Chongwe for him to claimdevelopment in the area.

There has been so much talk about development in this country in the last threeyears. We have come to hear of words like unprecedented development in thiscountry. Those are the terms we hear, meaning development which we have never seenbefore,Masebo said. Sometimes I wonder and I even laugh.

Development you dont have to tell people and brainwash people about it, because iftheres development people will see it, they will feel it; you dont have to remindthem.

As member of parliament for Chongwe, you yourselves know what Ive doneand what I have not done. I dont have to sing about development because you cansee it. But if I begin to remind you, then know that something is wrong somewhere.

Masebo explained that the Chongwe Hospital President Bandas government wasboasting about was started by the late Mwanawasa after chieftainess Nkomeshyaprovided land.

She said although land was provided in 2003, the actual works commenced in 2005when she pushed the project just after Mwanawasa appointed her as health minister.She said it was worrying for President Banda and his team to claim glory over what they

did not build or start.That is why you see his pictures on posters talking about all these projects. Did you

ever see this during Chiluba or Mwanawasas time where you put the Presidentsportrait everywhere you are building a school, just wasting public resources? Thoseplacards cost money.

Right now that hospital has no staff houses. What Rupiah Banda should have doneis to build staff houses so that the hospital could start working,Masebo said. But

he is in a hurry to deceive you that he has built a hospital by coming to officially open itfor one day, three days later doors are closed.

Isnt that mocking the people? How can you fool people like that? Rupiah Bandashould be telling people that this is what I have done, not telling lies aboutunprecedented development. That is very cheap!

Masebo also said former Chongwe district commissioner Japhen Mwakalombe who isstanding on the MMD ticket was no match for her. She said it was equally wrong for himto be paraded on ZNBC television claiming that Chongwe district now had a water plant.

Mwanawasa made me local government minister because I wanted clean water for mypeople. So, President Banda should not claim anything on that.

Mr Rupiah Banda, the only job that he has done here in Chongwe is to bring mobilehospitals,Masebo said. And the young boy Mwakalombe is too small for me.Please tell everyone that I will stand on the PF ticket and our symbol in Chongwe hasnow changed.

The MMD government does not deserve another term of office. Just think for a moment;here is a country under Rupiah Bwezani Banda where he uses state machinery to getpeople to go on the state media and talk about another human being, his own brotherand paint him black like a snake, or like a goat or like a dog. A man who has a wife, and

a beautiful wife for that matter, DrChristineKaseba.A man who has got children who are very well brought up, not dealers like some of thesePresidents that we have today. And a man who has worked hard for this country and hepaints him as if he is a Satan.

How can you have such a President who can use state tools, the Zambia NationalBroadcasting Corporation, to go and insult a fellow man simply because you want toremain in State House?

How would you feel when Mr Sata becomes president and he begins to use small boys toinsult President Banda, all in the name of politics? It is time to bring about change.

And Masebo told the crowd that elections would be held in August and urged them tostart vigorous campaigns immediately.

On attacks from MMD spokesperson Dora Siliya, Masebo said she had no time torespond to irrelevant matters or people who usually spoke under the influence of alcohol.She said Siliya was no match for her; therefore she could not waste time discussing her.

She is smart Dora to other people, but to me she is no match so I will not waste timeresponding to her. That is why you see that I just ignore whatever she saysaboutme, Masebo said.

Masebo later requested Sata to stand so that everyone could see that he was a healthy

man.

She said it was sad that President Banda could use state machinery to defame Sata whois supposed to be his brother.

And a team of 21 officials comprising chieftainess Nkomeshyas indunas and villageheadmen went up the podium to greet Sata and confirm that he was not sick aspropagated by the MMD government.

Masebo, who had a mouthful of words, was later persuaded to give chance to Sata sincethe sun was setting. She promised to camp in Ndola rurals Kafulafuta Constituiencyfor a week in order to help Patrick Mwanawasa succesfully campaign during theforthcoming tripartite elections.

Apart from several PF members of parliament and officials, the rally was also attended byProfessor Nkandu Luo, Fackson Shamenda, Wendy Sinkala, former home affairspermanent secretary Susan Sikaneta, women rights activist Sarah Longwe and Dr WazaKaunda, among other eminent personalities.

Earlier, PF secretary general Wynter Kabimba said Sata was the only former government

official who left employment without being dismissed. He said despite serving the countryin various government positions, Sata was never dismissed but resigned on his own.

Mr Rupiah Banda was fired when he was Namboard general manager. When heworked with us in Lusaka City Council as governor, Dr Kaunda fired him. He was alsofired from the diplomatic service. This is Mr Bandas record. So, you cannot comparethe two in terms of credentials, said Kabimba.

And Kabwata PF member of parliament Given Lubinda urged Zambians to questionPresident Bandas source of money for the so-called development.He said President Banda could be putting the country in problems by borrowing moneyunnecessarily.

The K1.3 trillion he talked about that he will spend on road works, that is one quarterof the national budget. Where is he going to get that money which we did not provide forin the budget?

This should cause you worry because this man could sell the country. He is startingprojects which he is not finishing, all in the name of wanting to win an election. Please donot give him another chance because he will finish off even the little there is left, saidLubinda.

Addressing the same rally, Sata said Masebo was a very sincere, honest andhardworking person.

This lady is very honest and hardworking. When she was working in theLusakaCitycouncil, she did not even steal a paper clip,Sata said. She is not aforeigner here. She is a daughter of the soil. She knows your problems and she cantlet you down.

Sata, who before the rally had a closed door meeting with chieftainess Nkomeshya for 30minutes, said it was always a problem to have a leader who had no political background.

In 1992 when I was Minister of Local Government, this lady came as a councillorand deputy mayor. After training, she came here as member of parliament.WhenWynterKabimba, Emmanuel Chenda and others left MMD to come and join me,she remained behind,Sata said. Madam, we welcome you.

Sata told the crowd that some people would soon be acquitted just because PresidentBanda wanted to win certain parliamentary seats. He said President Banda had not doneanything in Chongwe.

The change the people of Chongwe want is a road from Palabana up to lowerZambezi to be done. The people of Chongwe want a road to Kasisi to be done, hesaid.

Sata said there was need to turn Chalimbana College into a university.We need a secondary school in Kanakantapa and Manjika. I have never seen agovernment which allows thieves to be ministers, Sata said.

He said a PF government would build secondary schools in all chiefdoms.And Sata said President Banda was stealing from the people by reducing the fertilisersubsidy from eight to four bags.

The people without employment is you, the people without food is you. So dontcry for me, cry for yourselves, he said.

He said the Soli people were very lucky to have a chief like senior chieftainessNkomeshya Mukamambo II.

The chief you have here was my boss when I wasLusaka districtgovernor. ThisladyMasebowas very hardworking when she was deputy mayor, Sata said.He said chieftainess Nkomeshya saw the suffering of young people and provided land forKanakantapa resettlement scheme.

So if the chieftainess says there is no food hereChongwe, who is Mwakalombe tocome and say there is food here? You have to be very careful with MMD, Sata said.The problem sheMasebohad was that she had a typical MMD informer as districtcommissioner.

Sata said MMD was very desperate.Mr Rupiah Banda has sent three people from one newspaper to go and manufacturestories in Mbeyain Tanzaniathat I am from Mbeya myself. But we have the record. Letthem come, we will meet them,Sata said. They are going to give you all sorts ofstoriespropaganda.

I have been standing or sitting here for two hours now; in the vocabulary of Mr RupiahBanda, this is a sick man.Sata said MMDs rule was coming to an end.

You must know that on 2nd October this year, whether elections are held inSeptember or August, that will be the end of the rule of MMD, he said.Sata also the current administration had sold a number of institutions like Zamtel.

If you are not careful one day you will wake up and find people telling you thatlets go, you have already been bought, said Sata.
