From the Pastor

Peace be with you, This week I a ended the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) mee ng virtually with all the bishops across the US. The last mee ng which would have been last June was cancelled so this was our first mee ng in a year. It was good that we did something, but it is much be er when we meet in person. It gives us a chance to discuss the issues during meals and breaks and I’m able to reconnect with those who I enjoy being with. For example, I try always to get together with Bishop Edward Braxton who is the newly re red bishop of Belleville, Illinois. Bishop Braxton has taught me so much about the history of race in our country and about the USCCB. During this virtual mee ng, these kinds of encounters did not happen. I was frankly disappointed in the discussion on Theodore McCarrick at the public session. Without being there, it was impossible to gage the mood in the room or to know who online was speaking. I am sure there were many of us who would have spoken if we could. It is my hope that I will have a chance to con nue the conversa on in the commi ee I was voted into by the bishops of Region One (New England), the “Commi ee on the Protec on of Children & Young People.” My three-year term on this commi ee, represen ng the bishops of New England, began with the end of this conference. I am told this commi ee, along with the Na onal Review Board, which is mostly lay people, will take up the issue of the McCarrick report. It is my hope it will expand the scope of the report into issues of the money that McCarrick was able to give as gi s that clearly bought him power in the Church, and at least give sugges ons into a be er way for the Church to choose bishops. I also hope to help further define what cons tutes abuse. Since the establishment of this commi ee, the Church has added “vulnerable persons” to the mandate, especially in the document “Vos Es s Lux Mundi.” Having spent the last 18 years prosecu ng these cases in the Archdiocese of Boston, I am happy to bring that experience to this new role on this commi ee. The other commi ee that I am a member of is the “Catholic Campaign for Human Development” (CCHD). When I was asked to be on that commi ee of the USCCB, I said “yes” to it in ignorance. I only knew it to be the commi ee that distributed monies collected from the na onal collec on to the poor. What I did not know is how much scru ny this commi ee has been under recently as some ques on some of the organiza ons that receive the money. This week I joined that commi ee on a very long call where we discussed how the money is distributed and how it is interpreted by others. What I learned is that the commi ee can control where the money goes but cannot control everyone who works for the various agencies that receive the money. I have been on this commi ee for six months, so I have two-and-a-half years le . I shall use that me to study the organiza ons who receive the money and if I can, by my vote, avoid these assets going to these groups that have immoral policies. I have found out, however, that what cannot be controlled is the personal views of some who work for the organiza ons, nor can I control those in the media who make huge leaps of bad-will towards the CCHD. If, for example, the CCHD gives money to an organiza on that feeds the poor and one of the people who distribute the food goes on social media and endorses a pro-choice candidate for office—that does not logically lead to the conclusion that the CCHD endorses that candidate. Nevertheless, this is the type of leap of bad-will that the CCHD is dealing with. I will be very watchful as to any ambivalence during my me on this commi ee. In addi on to speaking about these things, the USCCB mee ng also held sessions on the important issues of the Church ’s response to the pandemic, the problem of racism, and to what our Church’s rela onship with the presump ve President-elect Joe Biden will be. Regarding the later, a commission was formed to think more about it which is consistent with what the USCCB did when President Trump was elected four years ago. So many complicated issues. Please say a prayer for me that I might be a good and faithful bishop in our Church. Blessings on you and your families, Bishop Mark

Mass Intentions

V C is a special crucifix that travels from family to family to inspire prayers for voca ons to the Priesthood and to the Religious Life. We have suspended the ministry for the me being. We ask everyone to

please pray for voca ons to the Priesthood and to the Religious Life.

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Dennis Collins, Jr. Carmella Picciuto

and all our deceased relatives, friends and parishioners of St. Theresa Parish

Prayer for Voca ons to the Priesthood Lord Jesus Christ, you share your saving work with all your brothers and sisters by their bap smal consecra on. But you call some to be ordained priests or deacons to make you visible in a special way, to proclaim your Good News, to celebrate your saving love in the Eucharist and other sacraments, to lead and encourage your people in their pilgrimage to the Kingdom. May you awaken a generous response in the hearts of those whom you are calling to this work, for the building up of your Church. May parents teach their children the need and responsibility of this voca on. Amen

RESPECT LIFE "It must be his Angel." ACTS 12:15

God assigns an Angel to watch over us at every moment of our lives. Each unborn child has a Guardian Angel, too. Prayer: Send Your Angels, O Lord, to

assist all who are tempted to abort, and to all who work to persuade them to choose life. Please pray to end the scourge of abor on. We are asking parishioners to pray the Rosary from home for the sanc ty of all Human Life, from concep on to natural death. Our Blessed Mother Mary has said that the one true weapon against all evil, especially abor on, is the Rosary.

Thank you for your prayers. St. Theresa’s Pro Life Commi ee

“The Eucharist is connected with the Passion. …To make sure that we do not forget, Jesus gave us the Eucharist as a memorial of his love … When you look at the Crucifix, you understand how much Jesus loved you then, when you look at the Sacred Host you understand how much Jesus loves you now." - Mother Teresa of Calcu a

CORI WEEKEND—This weekend!

CORI Weekend will be held November 21-22 a er all the Masses. We know things look a bit different this year as not all ministries have come back, but we s ll need to fill out CORI forms per the Archdiocese. We would like to get as many as we can during this week-end.

We remain hopeful that our ministries and volunteers will be back some me next year. If you have not been a ending Mass call the office and we will mail you a CORI form. Important: CORI Forms cannot be mailed back to us. They must be brought back to the rectory with your license for us to verify it.

Thank you for all you do for our parish for especially through this difficult year for all.

As the days get colder, we will bring our weekly scheduled Confessions indoors on Saturdays from 2-3 PM. We have been

doing Confessions in the back-parking lot and they have been well received. If you don’t see Father Tom or Bishop Mark si ng outside behind the rectory, we deemed it too cold, and we will open the side door to the foyer of the hall (the door on the big parking lot side.) Soon we will also have signs to help direct everyone. Please come in and wait in the foyer for your turn. Please know, you can always call and make an appointment for Confession with either Fr. Reilly or Bishop Mark.

Music note

Over the years, I’ve been asked if people had to wait un l the final hymn was finished before leaving Mass. The answer is “No”. Once the final prayer and blessing is completed, and the celebrant has exited, the Mass is over(parishioners can consider the final hymn as “traveling music”, as they leave).

God Bless, Sue Forbes

Thank you for your generosity

Christ the King

In a recent poll, many Chris ans of all denomina ons wanted to get more out of faith and were not quite sure how to accomplish that.

They some mes felt a disconnect between what they believed and how they lived. It wasn’t that they were aware of sin as much as they wanted to have a more meaningful connec on between church and life.

Jesus taught that we are to love God and love our neighbor as our self. Spirituality, then, is who we are in rela onship to God and to others. To connect church and life, we need two things: we need to pray and worship God in a community of faith and we have to have a concrete expression of faith; we have to be different because we believe. Faith is more than an idea; it is a way of life that brings God’s grace to everyday situa ons.

The Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy are examples of making the connec on. They are specific ways to lend a hand, to express faith in God, and to recognize the value and dignity of each person. In prac cing the Works of Mercy, we strengthen our faith and get so much more than we give.
